I am a peaceful man. I am nearly 50, and whilst I am active and healthy, I don’t appear to spend very much time playing – or at least not in the traditional sense of the word. And yet it doesn’t feel like that to me. So what is play? What does it mean for me, for you, for someone who is paralysed or an elderly person unstable on their feet? Do you stop playing as you get old? And what do you do when other people don’t like your style of play? Hmmm.

Play is an attitude. An attitude of joy, of fun, of bringing enjoyment into all that you do whether that be work, reading, dancing, exercising… You can choose your attitude, so choose to play today.

When you were a child you went out to play. You played skipping, football, tag and all sorts of games. Then as a teenager your play probably changed to encompass sport, dancing, going out, drinking etc. What do you play at as an adult? You may well still be involved in sport, and if you are presumably it is because you enjoy it. It’s easy to understand play in that context. But what if your enjoyment comes from other areas – reading, cooking, walking, meditating? Are you still playing then?

For me that is a big fat yes.

About 10 years ago, when my children were young (I have 4 girls), by brother-in-law had 2 children. He would come home from work and would run around with them throwing them up in the air, giving them piggy back rides, playing football and generally being a classic Dad. At the time I felt inadequate. I didn’t do much of that. We read books, made music, created plays and the like with only the occasional boisterous activity thrown in. I used to wish I was more like him.

Until I wised up.

Why on earth would I want to live someone else’s life? I am me and this is who I am. To deny that would be to deny my true nature. And so I understood that playing takes many different forms, and to really play I must be true to my nature, play from my heart and be me. When I made that shift I was then able to let go of any envy towards my brother-in-law, and more importantly let go of any self-criticism and judgement.

So be who you are, love yourself, enjoy life, play to your heart’s content and as you do so other people’s judgements and criticisms will no longer touch you, and will probably disappear from your life anyway.

Let me give you my personal experience with negative energy. In my past life, I was involved in the occult. Apparently I was not the master the magician I believed myself to be. I engaged in it half-heartedly. I was more or less an occult dabbler. My passion was for mysticism. When negative entities are called upon (I mean evil spirits), they must be dismissed properly, or they will be free to inflict pain on others. My former self did not put some of his wicked toys away after playing them, and they came to haunt me in this life. I dealt with several of them over the past years. After spreading salt and burning sage, I realized negative energy is hard to remove once it has implanted itself. I tried to communicate to them my authority as master of the house. I commanded them to vacate the premises immediately. Not only did this tactic not work, it made things worse. In fact, one night when I was meditating, a malicious entity etched a mark on my face as a sign of its superiority and power. At this point, I decided to try a new tactic.

Allow me to share with you the not so secret method for expelling all forms of negativity. You must take your focus away from it. All “things” require your attention in order to enter your reality. This includes negative energy or negative entities. Manifestations of lower vibrations require your attention to give them power and thereby affect your life. When you experience a situation or object that you deem to be negative, you generate negative emotion, which has its own vitality. Worse than that, your thoughts attract negative vibrations from outside of you. This includes “evil spirits,” or you may call them negative entities if you prefer. In either case, internal and external negativity creates unhealthy conditions within your personal environment.

These entities depend on your attention to thrive. Without it, they will return to their dark places. This has something to do with the law of attraction, in that, what you focus on is what you get. It is a very simple formula. Therefore, the remedy for negativity is to take your focus off of the situation or object that is causing you pain. It is straightforward, but difficult to put into practice. I recommend distracting yourself by putting your attention elsewhere, or on some other activity. Try raising your vibrations. This can be accomplished by doing something that brings you pleasure. The kind of activities you can involve yourself in includes: uplifting music, comedy shows, exercise, reading inspirational books, playing with a dog, being with nature, being with good-spirited friends, and so on. Use your imagination. Try something new. There are endless possibilities.

If you do the things I have mentioned, I guarantee you that even the most stubborn manifestation of negative energy will disappear. They cannot exist in your reality under these conditions. Just remember positive thought repels even the most fearsome negative entities.

No matter how much we love someone and how much we want to do a great job as a caregiver, it can often be a complex, frustrating and emotionally draining task. We must be very careful not to minimize ourselves in the process. To be a good caregiver, you must remember to recognize your own needs or you will soon become burnt out and unable to cope with the duties of caregiving.

Here are 5 keys to help you maximize your role.

1. Control what you CAN control.

Don’t skip meals. Eat breakfast – you can find 5 minutes to grab something, even if you must eat it while on the run. Choose to eat healthy foods that are high in nutrition, and low in fats and sugars. Stay hydrated – carry bottles of water in your car for use when you’re sitting in waiting rooms.

Get as much sleep as you can.

Find some time for exercise – a walk, an exercise tape or a 1/2 an hour on the Wii system, (if you can afford to purchase one) – my father used to find it hilarious to watch me do the hula hooping segmant of the Wii Fit program.

Consider meditation. There are 5, 10, and 15 minute meditations that can be worked into your day at some point. You can find meditation CDs at most music and book stores, and on-line audio sources. I was never a fan of meditation until I became a caregiver and now I find it essential to aid in daily stress reduction.

2. Avoid isolation.

As the person we are caring for becomes less able to “be out in public” due to anything from incontinence issues, mobility or behaviors stemming from Alzheimer’s Disease, we tend to start declining invitations, foregoing church services, delaying errands, etc.

We may also stop inviting friends in because the house may not always be clean, your loved one may be unpredictable or sleeping or it may just seem like one more thing to do.

These actions contribute to feelings of isolation so it’s important for us to rebel against them. It may mean extra work but in the long run, it means a more healthy state-of-mind for the care giver. (Remember that it was also difficult to bring children out in public and the house was RARELY ever completely tidy.)

(On a side note, the Alzheimer’s Association has little business card-sized cards that are available to carry with you. They say something like “My companion suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease. Please excuse any untoward actions.”)

3. Get respite care.

I can’t tell you how important this is. Even if you can only afford 4 hours per week, make sure that you sign up for it and USE it. You MUST get away from the house for awhile and do something just for you (and I’m not talking grocery shopping or hair cuts). The Area Agency on Aging has a scholarship program for respite care – check into that. Your local Alzheimer’s Association also has some vauchers for respite care (even some that are available for overnight use). Some local Alzheimer Associations also have a “Senior Buddy Program” where an elder in good health will come sit with your loved one for several hours once a week at no charge. The Senior Center in your neighborhood may also know of other no-cost respite provisions. Senior Day Care centers are also a viable option and charge about $7.00 – $10.00 per hour.

4. Recognize your limits.

There is no shame in not being able to be a super-hero. If there is something that you don’t feel comfortable doing (such as bathing a loved one), then don’t do it. If you feel that you are at the breaking point, make other arrangements. As hard as it will be choose a different arrangement for your loved one, we do not want you to become one of the 50% of caregivers who die BEFORE the one for whom they are caring.

5. You deserve to recognize your own needs and to live a good life.
