It is one of the most difficult situations to see your family suffer due to the alcohol addiction of a member and then it’s also very difficult to make the individual understand the need to be treated. Because in most cases the individual does not recognize the problem even when it is very clear that the person is in need of alcohol abuse treatment. The need to take radical actions in order to rid the addiction and recognize the need for treatment is very urgent and that is where these counseling centers and de-addiction centers can come in and help the individual.

One of the first steps in getting the treatment is to understand the need to be constructive and spend the available time in learning or doing activities that you are accomplished in. Like music, art, painting, dance or any such activity. Sometimes new activities can also interest you so much that you can also plan to learn them. There are many avenues you can turn to, which form a part of the de-addiction treatment. The need to be self sufficient is very important as that is the only factor that can very easily bring back the lost self respect and self esteem. And to be self sufficient you need to be accomplished in some kind of profession. Understanding that too can help a lot in the treatment. Imbibing some hobbies and meditating is very helpful and is a very vital part of any kind of de-addiction treatment.

A healthy life is important to lead a good life. Our health is like a wall pre-requisite to draw a picture. We are the architect of our own health. Either we prevent being unhealthy or cure the damage already done. Physical fitness is very vital. Fitness is a relative term. A sprinter should have a different degree of fitness as compared to a music teacher. There are many more dimensions one can bring to define fitness. Depending upon the required level of fitness, one should take appropriate steps.

More than five billion people live in this world. The body constitution of each one of us is different. The calories needed for every individual is different. There is no one common prescription for everyone in this world. Let us take few examples. The energy level needed for a professional designer is different from a taxi driver. To prescribe a labourer to grab a cereal bar for breakfast is ridiculous. My dad’s friend, a chain smoker died at the age of 83! Believe me, I observed him leading a healthy life. I am not recommending you to smoke to live a healthy life. I try to drive home the point that you should not get carried away by exciting information that is available around you and go overboard to apply in your daily life also. That is dangerous to a healthy life.

While we cannot have five billion suggestions for physical fitness and healthy life, we can identify common needs for all of us. Whether you are an Olympic champion or an office clerk; a celebrity or a hair dresser, only three appropriate steps have to be taken by you. Look at your eating habit, physical fitness exercise and exercise for the mind. You can build further with many bolts-on to achieve laurels in life.

We can use our common sense to lead a healthy life. It does not require great knowledge about science or medicine or physical exercise. Leave that to the specialists. We are all aware that food is very important for sustenance. Our body is a mysterious workshop containing various machines. Food is its input. The machine processes the food and provides energy to the body to do our daily life activities. If the input to the machine is more than its capacity to process, obviously the machine will break down. If the quality of input to the machine is not conducive to the construction of the machine, again the machine will collapse. Apart from the quality and quantity of intake, we should pay attention to timing. There is a saying. I am sure all of us know this. We should eat breakfast like a prince. In the after noon, we should eat lunch like a king. In the night, we should eat meal like a beggar. The digesting power during the night is very poor. Also there is no physical activity involved in the night when we sleep. So allow the stomach t be half filled. Have your dinner couple of hours before going to bed. When we wake up in the morning, if we take a glass of water, it helps for the body to hydrate to prepare for the day’s job. How we cannot start our car with 4th gear, the same way we should consider our body. After 10 hrs of empty stomach when we break the fast, we should start with simple and easily digestible food. Basically we should start with first gear and move on. In my view, to have physical fitness, 3 times of intake – morning, afternoon and night is sufficient. Perhaps refreshment between lunch and dinner can also be incorporated. The key driver is to scrupulously follow the routine timing of intake. This is a good recipe for a healthy life.

Our stomach is the origin for all our ailments. Even the main reason for bad breath originates from the stomach only. If we do not take care of our stomach and brush our teeth with costliest tooth paste and wash our mouth with most expensive liquid mouth wash, the bad breath will not vanish. We should keep our stomach clean by taking appropriate quantity, quality of food in routine timings. It is easier said than done but not impossible. You know who is the culprit? It is our tongue. If we pay heed to the taste, then we would not be able to control the quantum. It does not mean that we should not enjoy the taste. In fact the tongue contributes to a great deal for healthy life. When we enjoy food, we feel good. Feeling good is a sign of healthy life. If someone asks you to take only green vegetables to have physical fitness, there is no difference between us and herbivores. But the trick is not to cross the limit of moderation. That will be counter productive. Give importance to the taste but be careful. We should eat to live and not live to eat.

Many of us believe that being slim leads to a healthy life. One of my friends is slim but has cholesterol. It is a wrong notion. The body structure of each one of us is different. An elephant should not try to become a horse. Nature has created that way. What is important is to prevent becoming over weight or obese or under weight. If the damage is done, consult specialist to get back on track. Do not perform any physical fitness exercise without the proper guidance of a physical education expert. Sometimes you are the expert of knowing your own do-s and don’t-s. The first day when I went to learn Tai Chi, Chinese version of Yoga, the master told me to rotate my neck clockwise and anticlockwise as a warm up exercise. However I was earlier told by my orthopedic surgeon not to rotate my neck to recover from a type of spondylities I had. What was good for others did not suit me. There will be many such situations where we should use our wisdom. Especially we have to be careful on physical fitness exercise.

Life is a series of experiences. If our experiences are good we say the life is good, otherwise we say the life is bad. Mind determines whether an experience is good or bad. Healthy life is achieved by the combination of healthy body and healthy mind. Mind does not exist in our brain. Mind is a subtle matter manifests in our astral body between our soul and physical body. The food we eat is converted into energy by the blood and the finest particles of food reach the subtle mind and then to still subtler intellect. While healthy food definitely supports for a healthy mind, nevertheless exercise to the mind is also very important to have a healthy life. Yoga is considered to be one of the best forms of giving exercise to the body and mind. A branch of Yoga has physical fitness exercise also. Meditation is another form of giving healthy exercise to the mind. These have to be practiced with the help of specialists. This is the body-mind-intellect complex. A simple but effective understanding and application of the above will go a long way to attain a healthy life.

Brainwave Entrainment Sound Healing That Resembles Our Ancestors’ Techniques

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Sound Healing, is the conscious use of the energy of sound to promote human systems’ health, balance, and wellness in the physical body, the energetic body, the spiritual body, or a combination of all three. Scientific studies have in fact proven that the same way sound can change the molecular structure of water, sound or vibration, can also change or effect consciousness. Dating back one thousand years to ancient Egyptians and Australia’s Aborigines, many of our ancestors have used sound to heal themselves or to help them access higher levels of consciousness through traditional instruments and chants or mantra to restore balance to mind, body, and spirit.

The entire universe is in a constant state of vibration and every atom in it resonates at it own unique frequency. Frequency is measured in hertz, which is the number of cycles per second at which sound vibrates. Illness and disease occur when any single part of our body begins to vibrate at a different rate, and in turn, becomes out of harmony with the rest. Because the cells in the human body are made up of 70 to 80% water, they are the perfect conductor of sound to help bring your physical body back to perfect health.

Constant stresses in daily life trigger the brain’s “fight or flight” response, creating a constant imbalance, making it more difficult for some to get their bodies and minds back to a space of tranquility and wholeness, which creates imbalance and illness. Sound is starting to become more and more prevalent in our society for healing. Psychologists are now using sound to help children with learning disabilities. Sound has also been found to assists people with sleep disorders by altering brain wave states. In today’s modern society, sound therapy is becoming one of the most powerful of therapies, due to results of a wide array of ailments.

The answer to these constant stresses in life is simple is simple right? Slow down, relax, take time for yourself, exercise, eat right, spend time with your family, sit outdoors and get grounded. While these things may sound very simple, we live in a different world than we did 30 years ago. Homes with both parents working, daily stresses and larger demands at work, running the kids to and from their schools, and many after school activities, make just simply taking the time to live a fulfilled life and enjoying your family hardly existent anymore. This is why we need to be cognizant of keeping our bodies in a continuous and harmonious state. Slowly but surely though, we are trying to get back to those times of ease and centering ourselves with what’s important in life.

Findings of resonant frequency of organs is happening worldwide by doctors to aid in vibrating the entire body back into a state of health, and transmute illness and diseases such as anxiety, PTSD, migraines, depression, memory issues, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and even cancer. “You can really look at disease as a form or disharmony,” says Dr. Gaynor director of oncology at the Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center in New York, and author of Sounds of Healing. “We know that sound and music have profound effects on the immune system, which clearly do have a lot to do with cancer.” [1]

There was also a study in April of 2016, that involved patient with Alzheimer’s Disease. Researchers from the University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, and the Baycrest Centre Hospitals conducted a study of these patients in different stages of the disease, subjecting them to sound simulation at 40 hertz. They noted “promising” results with cognition, clarity, and alertness. Lee Bartel, one of the authors of these findings stated that,”Parts of the brain appear to be at the same communication frequency, and that frequency is about 40 Hz. So when you have a deterioration of that – when you have too little of it – the two parts of the brain that want to talk to each other, like the thalamus and the hippo campus, the short-term memory to the long-term memory, they can’t talk to each other, they won’t communicate, so you won’t have long-term memory.” Bartel explained that the sound-simulation treatment at 40 Hz leads to an “increased” frequency, which allows “parts of the brain to talk to each other again.” [2]

There are various methods of utilizing sound to invoke this change or level of consciousness. People that meditate will tell you that Chanting and Toning are two very powerful ways to vibrate sound through the body. As a person that meditates with sounds of chanting, I will say that it’s a game changer to the entire process. Sound altering brainwave states such as binaural beat frequencies are now being used to help with sleeping disorders. Our Chakras (life force energy centers) also benefit from musical sounds, helping to release blockages creating illness and disease to realign the flow of harmonious, predetermined frequency within the body.

Crystal Singing Bowls offer a unique advantage over synthesized sound, as they are made with the highest quality quartz crystal. We know that clear quartz is a crystal that is sometimes called the ‘Master Healer’ as it has the ability to amplify, transform, store, and transfer energy. The quartz crystal vibrates through the 70% of water of the human form and resonates with the various crystalline substances that also make up the physical body. The tones produced by the crystal bowls are not only heard by the ear, but felt in the body, enabling the energy to echo throughout each of the Chakra Centers. In essence, with Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls, one can create a powerful level of symphonic response to restore and rejuvenate. That’s the power of quartz crystal.

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

In your pursuit of self-improvement, there are many techniques and methods a person can use. Self introspection and meditation are the prominent methods of choice. There is another tool to use in meditation and that is the use of chanting mantras to release negative thoughts for enlightenment and awakening.

A mantra is a sound, syllable, word or group of words that is repeatedly written, verbalized, visualized or sung. The practice of repeatedly saying or singing a mantra is known as chanting. This repeated harmonic frequency or vibration created by the chant transcends throughout the body and mind. Everything in the Universe has its own harmonic frequency and vibrates. Even the negative thoughts, stress, emotions, traumas, resentment, guilt, fears and anger collect in our emotional selves. Over time, the accumulation of negative energy and thoughts will actually attract more negativity. The harmonic vibration created by the chanting, is intended to absorb and replace all the negative energy from stress and frustration.

“Mantra” is a Sanskrit word of two syllables. First is “man” which translates to: mind and second is “tra” which translates to: deliverance. The literal translation of the word “mantra” is mind deliverance. Chanting intensifies and reinforces the intent of the mantra.

Mantras started in the Verdic tradition of India then became an important portion of the Hindu tradition and Buddhism. Today the practice is taught through out the Western world. The benefits, when practiced correctly, are real and genuine.

There are mantras and chants that have been developed in other parts of the world. Many civilizations created their own methods for healing the mind. In the South Pacific, on the Hawaiian Islands, the healing practice of Ho’oponopono was developed. Dr. Hew Len’s inspiring incredible story of the healing of an entire ward of patients who suffered with mental issues by his practicing Ho’oponopono is fascinating.

Our goal is to learn these simple methods to calm and clear our minds. They are usually quick and easy to do. You can easily do them during your work day when your stress levels start to climb. As we are caught up in the frantic pace of today’s world, we do not have the time available for personal instruction and coaching in the proper techniques and methods of mantras, chants, and affirmations. Fortunately, there is help for those of us who are held back by time constraints.

Make it a point to learn and practice these techniques. The benefits drastically out way the small investment of time and the fee for instruction.

The acceleration principle

If time is exact, why does it sometimes seem to fly and at other times to crawl? The answer to this is obvious. Pleasurable activities whiz on by while the mundane drags.

Have you noticed that when you were a child time seemed to move at a slower pace? The summer days seemed endless. The evenings when you played, maybe even caught a firefly, were timeless.

At a certain age, probably around 40 you started to wonder where it all went. Where oh where have all the days gone? In each advancing year time seems to accelerate. You realize that before long you will be in the twilight of your years.

It is obvious that time is both objective and subjective. It can be measured with a clock or a calendar. In you own mind–how it is felt and how you experience it can vary.

The reason why you experience each year of your life as going by faster can be explained. When a child of five years old experiences a day it’s one day in about 1825 days. When a man or woman of fifty experiences a day it’s one day out of over 18,000 days.

As you can see the child’s day is a much larger part of his total life. The adult’s day is much smaller. The child experiences the day as lasting a lot longer than the adult does. It is obvious why you experience a day in your life at 50 years old as being much shorter than when you were 5 years old. You experience time subjectively

Time is one of the a priori principles of human action. All your decisions have to factor in time. You look at time objectively as it is measured in hours, days, weeks, months and years. However, how you subjectively feel about the time will greatly influence your decisions.

Another aspect of time is metaphysical. Since all is eternal, time is an illusion of limited consciousness. In certain states of consciousness time can seem non-existent. However, I think that we all know that as long as we’re human and experience the physical we will be aware of time. There is no such thing as non-time.

Capturing those happy moments

How do we slow down time? Is it possible to freeze those magic moments so they can be experienced through eternity? What can we do to capture the times we love and cherish. And experience them to the fullest.

Since the child’s world moves slowly by we can see the world through the eyes of a child. We become childlike. We live in the present moment. Instead of regretting the past and worrying about the future we live in the only moment that counts–now.

Now some might think that seeing things with the eyes of a child is absurd. After all you are an adult or at least on the verge of adulthood. Some will call you simpleminded or immature.

I’m not saying that you abandon reason, responsibility or give up ambition. Achieving your goals and desires are important. What I am stating is that you can live each moment as if the experience is fresh and new. You experience life with a special awareness. Making love, listening to your favorite music, bathing in the sunlight on a glorious spring or autumn day, the fleeting smile of a child, the euphoria from meditation–all of your moments can be sublime.

That is how you slow down time. You can almost freeze the moment. And the second, minute, hour or day will live in your memories forever. Instead of wallowing in the guilt of the past or the worry of the future, you will be overwhelmed with glorious memories and the future will be an exciting journey unfolding before your eyes. All of your days will be filled with Libertarian Pleasures.

I have Skinny Boyfriend Syndrome. He can eat anything he wants and lose weight. I, on the other hand, have only to look at his plate to go up one dress size. If there were Lifetime Achievement Awards for dieting, I would win one. In my ongoing efforts to make peace with my body, I have weighed every bite of food that passed between my lips, counted the calories of food I only dreamt of eating, purged my world of any food substance I might desire (in other words, life became a health food spa without the amenities), drank my meals and devoured every fad diet book published.

My favorite diet tome suggested that the key to weight loss is eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full. Genius, I thought. The problem is, I had no idea when I was hungry or full. It seemed that I have an opportunistic nature. Whenever I’m presented with food, my instinctive reaction is to eat it. Which is probably why, after two weeks of trying this approach, the only thing I had successfully done was gain five pounds. At some point, I realized that, like some Pavlovian experiment gone horribly wrong, my continual dieting had led me to obsess about food; I began dreaming of every next meal – how it would taste, when I could reasonably eat it (is 9:30am too early for dinner?), what was in the fridge right now and on and on and on. I was fixated on food.

Finally, I decided on a new tack: behavior modification. I would replace my vice of overeating with another less weighty vice. I thought of smoking, but I was way too vain to darken my lips and teeth. Drinking, with its accompanying loss of control, didn’t seem attractive. Purging less so. After some introspection, I realized that there was one way I could instantly shed 170 pounds – and a lot of my emotional dysfunction about food: I dumped my boyfriend. Happily this rapid weight loss plan caused me to lose 20 pounds of my own. Unfortunately, getting out of a bad relationship was not enough to keep my dress size down and after awhile, the lost weight began to subtly creep back into my life. In desperation, I contacted a therapist. Sitting in the waiting room, wanting something to take my mind off the mental exposure that lay ahead, I rummaged through my assortment of my ‘junk food travel essentials’ and inhaled a Twinkie . The subsequent sugar high may explain why, fifteen minutes later, when the therapist asked me what my thoughts were regarding my relationship with food, I rudely responded, “I’m paying you, do you have any thoughts?” She asked me what thoughts would I like for her to have. Instead of protesting over the inanity of the exchange, something inside me crumbled and I just answered: “I want you to think what a wonderful, beautiful, intelligent girl, so how can she still be single?” If this were the movies, there would be dramatic “Aha!” music right here.

For years, I’ve told myself that I can control my hunger through deprivation. But in that single sentence, I realized that my need to eat was wrapped up in my desires, my feelings, my expectations of myself and others and my experiences – both positive and negative. I had begun my road toward Emotional Intelligent Weight Loss. Three years later, though I’m still in therapy, I consider myself to be self-aware, which means I can now discern what I really want opposed to channeling my negative emotions to appetizing foods. Thus, my new goal is not so much to lose weight as to understand and control my emotions – what’s called Emotional Intelligence (EI) in psych circles. It is now clear to me that EI, rather than counting calories and fat, is key to not just losing weight – but also keeping it off.

EI is not like IQ, which is mostly static. You can learn to become more emotionally intelligent through self-awareness. And unlike a multiple choice test that has only one right answer, there are many ways to increase your EI. You can learn to meditate, journal your thoughts and feelings, write your autobiography, or do what I did and find a therapist. The how is not what’s important here. What is key is staying the course until you reach self-awareness.

While the process will require effort, as you increase self awareness, you will enjoy the benefits of greater control and confidence. The result is like ordering a set of Ginsu knives – by getting EI, you are able to manage your emotions. But wait, there’s more: by being in control of your emotions, you can be proactive rather than reactive about how you deal with stress. It gets better – if you start now, you will become in tune with the emotions of those around you so you will also have healthier, more meaningful relationships. So how does this relate to food? Like people, food is a stimulus that we react to. The only advantage we have over this relationship is that it is not really reciprocal. So you won’t find a cheeseburger staring down at you, asking why you won’t take a bite (although it may seem that way). Food does not entice us, but the associations we make with food are what suckers us into overeating and making poor menu choices. Instead of identifying that the source of your void is you, you think, “Hmm, I’m hungry.” But while food will fill the void momentarily, it’s like a drug in that you have to go back for more and more and stronger and stronger doses to maintain the feeling.

In my case, it was extra toppings of pepperoni and cheese on Sicilian slices – and that was just a snack. Bottom line (and path to bikini bottom): The only successful way to stave off this deadly compulsion toward food is by becoming more self-aware and through this, unmask your hidden desires. Sounds almost too easy, doesn’t it? But this theory has some substantial weight behind it. According to research on consumer behavior in undergraduate students by Blair Kidwell, David M. Hardesty, and Terry L. Childers of University of Kentucky, nutrition is not an important factor in these students’s daily food consumption. Rather, it is their level of EI that seems to make the difference of whether they were eating to live or living to eat.

Okay, I know, not everyone has an unhealthy relationship with food. Many people (none of whom I like) really do approach food as fuel and eat when they’re hungry. But – and the current obesity problem in this country bears this out – many more of us use food to avoid dealing with our emotions. We eat because we’re bored, stressed, lonely or angry. So the only way to make any changes is to gain some insight into what’s bringing on the emotion. When you use food as a psychological strategy to avoid coping with what you are feeling, you are rearranging external reality to meet internal needs. In other words, food has become the pleasure that drowns your real sorrows. While it may be difficult to admit, acceptance of those emotions is the only key to success.

I had a friend whose husband had been cheating on her for years. The signs were all there – countless business trips, unexplained absences, late night furtive phone calls. But she refused to acknowledge that anything was wrong. Coincidently, though, as his business trips increased, so did her weight. What I now realize is that she knew what was going on all along, but was unwilling to admit it. Fast forward five years and 55 additional pounds: her husband’s mistress’s daughter ended up in the same class with her son. She could no longer ignore the truth. She subsequently filed for divorce, began therapy, joined a weight loss program and lost the extra pounds. She had been in programs before but had been unable to shift her weight because she was emotionally in denial over her marital situation.

If you have been battling with weight for years, you owe it to yourself to learn how to monitor your feelings so you can become a better master of your own life. While becoming more self-aware is not an easy skill as emotions often appear in disguise, the actual process really is simple. What’s key is honesty. First, you need to think carefully when you want to eat. It’s important to question yourself every time that you reach for a cracker, a handful of jellybeans or whatever your favorite calorie filler is. What is making you want to eat? Are you genuinely hungry (in other words, is your body signaling that it needs nutrition to fill up)? Or are you using food as a crutch so you don’t have to deal with some other possibly more difficult feeling? Just by asking yourself these few simple questions can be enough to learn how to recognize your eating triggers and begin to make the right choices.

For as long as I can remember, my weight hovered 10 to 20lbs above the suggested BMI (the worst was after the birth to my first son when the scale nudged up to 170 pounds – too much for my 5.5 inch frame). Finally, after 15 years of yoyo dieting, the birth of another son and working on my self-awareness, I have finally leveled off at 125 pounds. Now I am pregnant again and this time around, I am not freaking out about my weight because I know that my food choices are healthy for me and my baby. Ok, I admit, worrying about extra pounds may never fully disappear. But having the knowledge of emotional intelligence has given me confidence that I can handle it – and lose in the long run.

Tips to Emotionally Intelligent Weight Loss- A Guide to Self Awareness:
Next time, before indulging in an unhealthy snack:
1-Write down your feelings on a piece of paper, napkin, whatever is at your disposal.
2-Ask yourself what changes you would make in your life.
3-Complete this statement with three positive visions for your life….I am *******!
4-Remind yourself that only YOU can change your circumstance
5-Take a deep breath and survey your body for any incongruent feelings.
Continue to do this exercise until you body is in line with your thoughts and words.

Brainwave Entrainment How Modern Technology Can Harm Your Fertility

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

The hallmark of modern technology is convenience and it can come with at a high price. Modern technology emits high levels of electromagnetic radiation, which is a definite hazard to optimum fertility and the developing embryo. The best way to protect your fertility and safeguard the health and well-being of you and your prospective family is to avoid devices that harm your body’s delicate cells.

In some instances it can actually be impossible to completely avoid radiation but being aware of specific sources of radiation and reducing your exposure to these devices is the best approach. One very simple way of doing this is to ensure that you don’t carry your mobile phone close to your body such as in a pocket for example.

Here are some of the sources of radiation, which can harm reproduction you need be aware about:

MOBILE PHONES
Mobile phones produce radio frequency (RF) radiation. Most mobile phones transmit and receive RF radiation at frequencies between 825 and 915 megahertz (MHz). These radio waves are emitted by both mobile phone handsets and base stations. RF radiation has the ability to heat human tissue, similar to the way in which microwave ovens heat food. The thermal effects produced by the electromagnetic field of the radio waves cause polar molecules in the body to generate dielectric heat and this heat can cause live tissue to die.

In addition, essential to be aware of children’s and developing babies’ vulnerability to mobile phone radiation. Some studies have shown that mobile phone radiation can cause damage to the DNA of cells – there was damage to chromosomes, changes to the activity of certain genes, and an increase in the rate of cell division and replication. At a time when cells are rapidly dividing and growing into specialized cells and tissues, we need to realise that any interference in this process may result in the development of birth defects or illnesses. Many studies also link module phone use with decrease in production and quality of a man’s sperm.

CORDLESS PHONES
Cordless phones emit the same type of radiation as mobile phones, however some experts believe they are even more dangerous than mobile phones. This belief is due to the fact that the base stations of cordless phones emit the same type of radiation as a mobile phone station tower, and depending on the model sometimes more than twice the amount of radiation as mobile phone tower. Radiation emissions from the base station of a cordless phone can be as high as six volts per metre – which is twice as strong as those found within 100 metres of mobile phone station towers. When standing two metres away from the base of a cordless phone, you would still receive radiation as high as 2.5 volts per metre-that’s 50 times what scientists regard as a safe level.

The best way to avoid exposure to cordless phone radiation is to not have one in your home or office. Use a standard fixed line and location phone instead-this particularly important if you are working to overcome fertility problems and/or miscarriages and want to have the healthiest possible baby. However, if this is not an option, try limiting the amount of time you spend on your cordless phone, and when you are not using the handset, keep it on the base station (at least 5 metres away from where you spend a lot of time in, such as living room, home office, bedroom etc. It is a good idea to move the base station to an area in your home where you do not spend a lot of time – such as the foyer or entry, or your garage.

WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY
Wireless technology such as wireless internet, computer networks and hot-spots as well as wireless mice, keyboards and speakers, also operate by using radio frequency non-ionising radiation similar to that used by mobile and cordless phones. Many believe that exposure to these low-level electromagnetic waves radiated from wireless technology devices can be as harmful to health and fertility, causing cellular damage and possibly cancer as the other types of radiation already previously described.

Studies conducted in this area show the non-thermal effects of this type of radiation include DNA damage and inability to self-repair, the opening of the blood-brain barrier (allowing toxins and pathogens to reach the brain), lowered immunity, decreased melatonin levels, cell damage, formation of micronuclei, changes in calcium metabolism affecting communication between cells, changes in brainwave patterns as seen on EEG’s, plus effects observed on many different systems of the body. Although there are still no long term studies on the effects of exposure to the radiation emitted by wireless technologies, it is estimated the results will be very similar to those discussed previously, linked to mobile and cordless phone use.

ELECTRIC BLANKETS
Electric blankets (a blanket with a built-in heating element so the person sleeping can maintain a desired temperature) are very popular around the world. Many people use electric blankets because their use can reduce home heating costs, however, what a price for your health to pay. Electric blankets have been seen to produce electromagnetic radiation over 70,000 times higher than normal acceptable levels. The electromagnetic radiation produced by electric blankets is able to penetrate about 6-7 inches (close to 20cm) into the body. Studies have shown that the use of electric blankets has been linked to an increase in the incidence and development of childhood leukemia.

The use of electric blankets have also been linked to an increased rate of miscarriage, impaired baby development, increased stress levels, memory problems and possibly other types of cancers. One study showed that due to electromagnetic radiation emitted during operation, women who used electric blankets while pregnant had both, longer pregnancies and a higher miscarriage rate.

Mostly radiation is something we have to learn to live with because it is not going away. However making better choices to reduce your exposure is ideal for optimum fertility and the health of your prospective child.

Tidbits of Serious Knowledge

My son came into the den where I was reading, he was 17 and a contrarian kid.

“If you are so smart, how come I cannot get to sleep at night, without tossing for two-hours?”

You do not have to be a relative of Al Einstein, the physicist, to know parents are the enemy when you are age 17. Now, I believe in cognitive manipulation, changing the mood, in order to maintain a relationship with demented kids and relatives.

I gave it a pregnant pause and asked, “Who is the smartest kid you know?”

“My best friend, Bob Handler, he gets a straight A in everything and has an early acceptance from MIT.”

“OK, call him on the phone and ask him if he gets to sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow, or spends half the night thinking about getting to sleep.”

“Dad, I thought of that and did it. He has the same problem, and so does the rest of my class.”

“Before I reveal to you the secret of sleeping on demand, you have to agree to follow my algorithm exactly.”

“You always have to show off using a mouthful of vocabulary. What is an algorithm?”

“Do it my way and go to Webster and come back with the answer.”

He scowled, and returned smirking – “Why could you not just say – step-by-step?”

“Funny, if I want something from someone, I do not complain – just shut up and listen. My way or the highway?”

“I am listening. Talk.”

“Step one: awareness and admission that your thinking brain is in control. You gotta first admit to yourself that Self-talk, also known as Stream-of-Consciousness, has you under its power. It is the master and you are the slave. Know where it is located in your brain?”

“It is called Precuneus, the structure responsible for self-consciousness
and visuo-spatial imagery – the pictures on your mental screen. Get it?”

“Will I live long enough to hear the way to instantly fall asleep before I graduate
college?”

“Maybe not. Do you know another name for the Precuneus?”

“Duh -no!”

“It is called your Minds Eye. You have heard that expression, right?”

“Professor, please get to the point – I have a life to live, unlike some people.”

“Get this – what we resist – will persist. Let it roll around in your chimpanzee
mind. Next, what we focus on – expands. Finally, emotion follows imagery.
If you get those steps you win five bucks.”

“Are you saying that what we see in our minds eye creates how we feel?
Wait – thinking causes more thinking – expands, and the harder I try, the worse
it gets – persists.”

“I handed him the fin. And for another buck what is the name of the brain structure

producing your mental-movies and site of self-consciousness?”

He held his hand out – precuneus. “I looked it up in Webster’s; it means wedge-shaped.”

“You just accelerated to Ape brain. The secret of getting to sleep is being aware and
using your breathing. Why? Breathing is part of your non-conscious mind, while
thinking (left-brain) is part of your conscious mind. Even though the self-talk is
mostly involuntary, it uses the specializations of your left-brain, and specifically
your Broca’s and Wernicke’s Areas.”

“When you want to get to sleep it requires a shutdown of your left-brain, operating
at Beta brainwaves, 14-30 cycles per second. Sleep starts in Alpha Hertz, 8 to 13 cycles per second, and escalates downward to Delta brainwaves, 0.5-3.5 cycles per second. I am not going to explain dreaming, rapid-eye-movements every 90 minutes – no matter how much you beg me.”

“In your dreams. What do you mean breathing?”

“You must simply count your breaths in order to fall asleep. The countdown of
inhaling and exhaling from one to fifteen gives you relief from the chaotic involuntary self-talk, and forces you to focus on your non-conscious – your right-brain. See, breathing is not under the control of your left-brain; it is part of the vegetative processes of your body like the circulation of your blood, heartbeat and blood pressure. They are run by your Brain Stem and Basal Ganglia, your right-brain, and have nothing to do with your thinking processes.”

“How?”

“You take a deep diaphragmatic breath (inhale), hold it for a count of one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, and s-l-o-w-l-y exhale. Where is
your brain? Focusing on your breathing, and voluntarily keeping count of the number of breaths from one-to-fifteen.”

“That is it – I am asleep?”

“Ninety percent of the time in fifteen breaths, you will be asleep. For the times you are overanxious, stressed by a coming exam, interview or presentation, there is another easy strategy. It is called Look-Link-Snap, some people call it – I am a Camera.”

“Before you start the fifteen breaths and focusing on your non-conscious breathing,
you change your mental-movies from involuntary to taking control. Intentionally choose to imagine a great day at Jones beach. The hot summer sunshine, the slamming of the waves, and the feel of the sand and breezes.”

“Can you picture that in your minds eye right now?”

“Sure. It is easy.”

“Now make believe your eyes are a camera and you are going to snap three pictures of your relaxing day at the beach. First, one of yourself, laying on the white sandy beach, second of the hot sun in the sky, and third, the moving waves of the Atlantic ocean.”

“Easy. I aim my camera by focusing on the scene I want – that is the Look step. Next, I connect the idea of what I see with feeling relaxed and getting sleepy. I figured that out for myself. Finally, I use my eyeballs like a camera lens, and save the picture like on my computer.”

“Perfect, you are truly of the homo sapiens tribe, and deserve another buck.
If you do the Day-at-the-Beach before the breathing countdown, you cover all the bases. Mostly, I go right to the one-to-fifteen breaths, and am in dreamland before
I get to twelve.”

“I gotta try that strategy tonight, he said. It sounds like a fun kind of game. And I can see why it works too. Ya know, maybe you should have gone to medical school and not law school. I bet your sleep strategy helps me when I go to Miami University. Thanks Dad.”

“Last thing, see if you can get the gist of this. Nobody you know understands it, not even Bob Handler. You conscious mind – the left hemisphere which controls your
right side, produces about 40 bits of information per second. Got it? Now, your non-conscious mind and right-brain (the brain stem and basal ganglia), processes 11 million bits of information per second. Some difference, huh?”

“Sure, because it runs the big show including all the senses, muscles, blood flow, heart pumping and breathing. Yeah, but it is surprising because nobody really talks about the non-conscious, we spend our time admiring our thinking mind and its creations.”

That is all there is, kid. Remember it.

See ya.

Just in case all the rain and cold are getting to you – fear not. Yoga still works even if you’re having to battle with torrential rain, gales and storms. Believe me – all of us at the Dru Yoga centre in Snowdonia have been practising in the last few weeks! We’ve come up with our top 10 things which keep us happy even when it’s raining. We hope you like them too.

1. Warm pyjamas. On a cold winter’s night there’s really nothing like putting your nightwear on a radiator before you slip into bed with your hot water bottle. Some luxuries are quite simple!

2. A favourite here is Dru Meditation. Just a few minutes of silent sitting daily, using Dru meditation techniques, makes us feel glad to be alive. Take a meditation retreat, or create one in your home. Clear a space, light a candle and gaze at the flame without blinking for as long as possible. Then close your eyes and focus on your breathing for five minutes. Stretch gently and open to eyes to a brighter day!

3. Visualise being Australian. Out in Aus, rain is seen in quite a different way than it is here. That’s pretty understandable as they hardly get any! When I was out there teaching Dru Meditation holidays last spring, much of the country was in severe drought, and any drops of rain were greeting with celebration. I’ve found that just changing my attitude to the wet stuff can make life a little brighter.

4. Surya namaskar. The ancient yogis really knew a thing or two about winter. We find that a good flowing Dru yoga sun sequence blows away all those winter cobwebs, brings a wonderful sense of energy and positivity to even the darkest morning. If you don’t know all the movements, get to a Dru Yoga class near you! And fast!

5. Do a Cleopatra. Nourish your skin and your soul with a warm milky bath. Add 1 tablespoon runny honey and a cup of milk to a running bath then lie back and listen to some relaxing music. Simple, cheap and just so effective!

6. Laughter. Get the endorphins flowing with our favourite funny movies – here at Dru we’re still debating the best list, but it must include The Man Who Knew Too Little, Groundhog Day, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Airplane. And it tones up the abdominal muscles better than sit-ups!

7. Barley grass smoothie. Sometimes a boost of nutrients can really help our mood – try our favourite: blend one banana, 3 tablespoons organic bio yogurt, ½ glass fruit juice, 1 teaspoon dru barley grass powder, 1 teaspoon omega oils. This also is great for the skin, fantastic for improving mood and contains nearly 3 portions of fruit and vegetables!

8. Plan an uplifting retreat. In the dark, cold winter months, somehow just planning such a holiday can be an uplifting experience. Make a list of what’s important to you in your perfect yoga or meditation break – and affirm that you’ll find the perfect environment for you. Then get googling!

9. Have a good breakfast. It might sound like something your Mum might say, but having a substantial meal first thing really does make life seem much better. Our favourite is millet or oat porridge with tahini and honey. Put one handfulls of porridge oats to soak with a cup of water the night before and it’ll cook really quickly in the morning. Sultanas and honey are optional!

10. Buy yourself flowers. I’ve got a small bunch of tulips in my living room and the whole atmosphere feels so much brighter. If you want an added feel-good factor – give some flowers to a friend – for no good reason. The inner glow you’ll get will warm the cockles of your heart.

Consumers are becoming more health-conscious by the day and this is helping them to live longer. Exercising and choosing foods and products that contain natural ingredients have become part of the lifestyles of many. Business owners should care about the well-being of their customers because without these folks, their companies would not survive. This wellness focus is leading some marketers to select imprinted promotional products that relate to healthy living.

Turning Clients Into Health Experts

General wellness is something that benefits everyone, but many people are unaware of even the most basic health information. With a wellness calendar, they learn a new tip each month in an easy-to-read format that includes an image. By incorporating the information, prospects and customers make their lifestyles healthier. The sender promotes itself through a full-color, digital logo.

Small products designed to keep people healthy do not cost much but can prevent disease, infection, and even serious medical conditions. Regular hand washing is recommended but this may not be convenient for traveling workers. A small container of hand sanitizer on a lanyard allows them to make hand hygiene a priority wherever they go. Marketers use the front label to promote their businesses in colorful ways.

Everyone should have a knowledge of basic first aid and CPR. While many businesses have at least one first aid kit on site, far fewer have staff trained in CPR administration. An informational CD that provides written and audio instruction on compression-only CPR is a unique promotion. Recipients can distribute the information to staff and hold practice seminars so each employee learns this life-saving technique. When the instruction is put to music, the lesson becomes more fun.

Getting Personal with Promos

In the past, consumers may have taken offense at receiving a promotional CD designed to help them quit smoking. These days, they flock to this information because they want to ditch the bad habit and improve their health. By listening to a smoking cessation CD, they learn how to relax, meditate, and practice other techniques that help them resist the urge to smoke. The promotional aspect of this product is subtle: a one to four-color company logo on the insert and CD.

The same positive trend is proving true for CDs that help people lose weight. At some point during their lives, most people are displeased with their weight. Many marketers can relate to clients and prospects who are battling the bulge. Some combine a weight loss CD with a water bottle, pedometer, and some fruit in an attractive gift basket that encourages recipients to keep up the good work.

Wellness-focused CDs include those with music designed to accompany a workout. The CD begins with slow songs perfect for a warm up and the tempo escalates to support a brisk walking workout. Exercisers can download the tunes to an MP3 player to take the workout on the go around town. By offering imprinted promotional products like these, marketers help clients and prospects get and stay healthy so they will be loyal for many years.
