Meditation is a holistic discipline that has been practiced throughout antiquity and supports the process of moving the mind beyond reflexive thinking into a deep state of awareness. There are many disciplines of meditation that have different goals. The wide range of meditative practices can seem overwhelming to someone who is considering meditation for the first time. Relax, learning to meditate is easy and you can’t do it wrong.
Why meditate?
Some meditate for a greater spiritual awareness, others meditate to relax the mind, reduce stress, connect with inner wisdom, create more mindfullness and a deep sense of inner peace. You don’t have to have a particular reason to meditate, just an interest in seeking its possibilities.
What you need to get started
You don’t need a lot of expensive equipment to meditate. When it comes to meditation, its just you and your “self” that you need. There are, however, a few things that might support you as you venture into the peaceful world of your own heart and mind.
1. Find your ideal place
It doesn’t take a lot of room to meditate. Your meditation practice can be done anywhere you are, but it is good to set aside a special place, especially at first. The more you return to this place to meditate the easier meditation will become because your mind becomes conditioned to relax in this space. It can be your favorite chair, a peaceful corner of a room or a special spot outside.
2. Get comfortable
Being comfortable is at the top of the list for meditation success. It is difficult to get out of your own mind when your back hurts or your legs get cramped. Think soft and supportive. Blankets can be rolled up and pillows positioned to provide you comfortable support. You can meditate lying down, sitting or standing. You can’t do it wrong, so find a comfortable posture for you.
3. Set the mood
Creating a small ritual of lighting a candle or incense at the beginning of your meditation session creates a unique mood from all other activities in which you engage. Again, this sends a message to your mind that it is time to calm itself. Low light is a relaxing setting, so consider how much light you would like to feel peaceful.
4. Music
Some people like to meditate in silence and that is a beautiful way to practice meditation, but it is often very helpful to have some very light music or sounds of nature playing. Using ear plugs is a great way to feel especially connected to the music and integrate it into your meditative experience more seamlessly. By allowing the music to lift you and carry you through the meditation, a meditation session can be quite surprising. Music inspires our inner self to express itself.
5. How to practice
Meditation is an easy and effective way to soothe and calm the body, the mind and the spirit. It clears the path for our mind to naturally seek its deepest wisdom. Once you have found a location, set the mood with music, candles and light, take your place and close your eyes. Notice how everything seems to settle down once the eyes are closed.
Begin by taking a few deep breaths, noticing the rise and fall of your chest, notice the calming effect this has on the mind. Begin at the top of your head and slowly bring your attention to each area, releasing tension as you scan your body. Allow yourself to feel the weight of your body resting effortlessly where ever you are. Feel yourself sinking into the surface as you relax deeply.
Random thoughts may come. Don’t resist them, allow them to come and float past you as clouds in the sky. You can notice them without attaching to them as they drift by. Bring your attention back to your breath. Stay in this state of relaxation as long as you would like, then begin to come out slowly. Wiggle fingers and toes at first then slowly bring your attention back to the present moment.
As you begin your meditation practice, remember that it is not hard, it is easy and that you cannot do it wrong. Music or guided visualization are a beautiful way to support you as your begin the journey, so use them. There are many CDs available as well as free online downloads that are extremely well done and helpful.
Meditation does not have to be a mystery. With a few simple steps, you can create your very own meditation practice and a personal place to recharge your batteries. Nothing clears the mind more quickly that to empty it and embrace your inner stillness.
