As a practicing psychotherapist I constantly hear clients complain about problems with sleep: falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting enough sleep. While each person has an individual sleep pattern, one can present several general observations. To begin with, the modern ideal of eight hours of uninterrupted sleep is a recent invention. Historically, people have frequently taken sleep in several stretches with pauses in between them. One may consider the regime of an eight-hour night to be a manifestation of an industrialized society that prefers everyone to arrive at work at the same time. Given the need to rise early and social pressures toward enjoying the evening hours, it is no wonder that most people get insufficient sleep. Nonetheless, there are several things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep.

1. Make a list of all the factors that historically have made sleep difficult for you. These may include caffeine, alcohol, reading or watching disturbing material, having a fight with a child or partner, getting to bed too late, etc. Take note of your personal obstacles to sleep, and make a serious effort to avoid them. In particular, make an effort to go to sleep at the same time each night.

2. Make a list of all the techniques that historically have worked for you in getting to sleep. They may involve a soothing beverage, a warm bath or shower, soporific reading material, amiable conversation with your partner, quiet music, etc. Make note of your personal aids to sleep, and make a serious effort to incorporate them into your routine every night.

3. Imagine a virtual receptacle into which you can deposit all of the thoughts, worries, concerns, problems and other mental disturbances that interfere with proper sleep. Form a mental image of the receptacle in as much detail as possible: think of its size, shape, color, decoration, etc. Then when unwelcome thoughts intrude-as they undoubtedly will–respectfully deposit them into your virtual receptacle along with a promise to attend to them the next day. You will need to be persistent in refusing to engage unwelcome thoughts during sleep time. If the virtual receptacle does not suffice, create an actual physical container, such as a small bowl, write down the intruding thought in a few words, and then put it away. Under no circumstances should you entertain or engage disturbing thoughts.

4. Create a mental image of the most perfect sleep situation you can imagine. It may include a down comforter and double doors in a Swiss hotel, or perhaps balmy breezes coming through the open door of a Hawaiian retreat, or even sleeping out under the stars. Picture the scene in as much detail as you can evoke. Then create a word, phrase or sentence-think of it as your “sleep mantra”-that you can employ to help carry you off to sleep. Something from childhood may prove particularly helpful, be it a phrase from a prayer (“When I lay me down to sleep… “) or a childlike thought (“My bed is my friend”). Instead of a word, it may be an image or a remembered sound or a happy, peaceful memory. When unwelcome thoughts intrude-as they surely will-patiently draw your mind back to your mantra.

5. If you wake up during the night, consider the possibility of spending ten or fifteen minutes in some calm activity such as reading, meditating, yoga, or enjoying your pet. Avoid watching television, wrestling with difficult problems, playing competitive games on the internet, or rehashing unresolved conversations. Then, after a brief interval, return to bed, and carry out the sleep routine described in Step 4.

Sleep-good or bad-is a habit. Changing a bad habit requires repetition and mindfulness. Creating a regular habit of good “sleep hygiene” will amply repay the effort it requires.

Recently I entered my yoga studio feeling restless and anxious. Each week, the instructor asks us to check in with what we’re feeling and then to set an intention for our practice. On this particular evening, I was feeling restless and my intention is to get grounded and centered in Christ. As we transitioned through session, she continued to remind us to connect with our intention and to bring our minds back to the present moment. By the end of the hour long session, my mind was at peace.

Many Christians see yoga as an obstruction to Christianity. I see it as an enhancement. Like meditation, Christ-centered yoga (and other various forms) acts as a chasm or tunnel that ushers me to enter into the deeper chambers (the presence) of God. It does this by helping me to clear away the weights, worries, and the negative mindsets that so easily latch onto me as I go through the day and then to release them to Christ. Colossians 3 tells us to put off the old man. Through subduing of the body and controlling the breath, the choreography of yoga can calm the restless beast in each of us, allowing us to open our hearts more fully to our Creator.

Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 10:29-31 regarding food offered to idols, “For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” That’s how I see yoga. In 1 Corinthians 8:4, Paul goes on to say, “We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so called gods, whether in heaven or on the earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords) yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live and there is but one Lord…”

Currently I am in a yoga teachers training program. At one point I was an instructor for a Christian yoga alternative program, which was good; however, I wanted greater skill and confidence in this practice. I wanted to know proper form and alignment to prevent injuries. I would have attended a Christian yoga training program but I needed something local as I’m not a very good online learner. I need a classroom and structure.

Although am learning about yoga philosophy there is no emphasis on serving or worshipping pagan gods. In fact, the bulk of my training is on teaching the asanas (poses) safely, beautifully, and with the greatest health benefit to my students. If I had one complaint about yoga, it is that yoga (as a spiritual practice) does not profess that Jesus Christ is Lord, but neither do Zumba, Pilates, Kickboxing or the martial arts. Worship comes from the heart of the participant. The Bible says, whatever you do, do it unto the Lord. God leaves that decision up to us.

In yoga they have what are called yamas or niyamas. These are principles for living. A few of them include “do not covet,” “practice chastity,” “promote non-violence”, “practice truthfulness,” “be content,” and “surrender to your higher self (God).” In every yama or niyama I hear the words of Jesus, God, or the disciples. These truths strengthen me and support my beliefs in Christ, not take away from it. It cosigns everything I know about God and the Bible. We are taught that the ultimate goal of yoga is to clear away our false self, our ego and all its conditioning, so that our true self, our God-self can come through. It doesn’t really matter whether you’re Christian, Buddha, or of some other faith, I believe we all struggle with keeping our eyes on what is divine and what is truly important: love, peace, joy, contentment, faith, and truth.

Yoga, as an exercise and discipline helps us slow down. It is the integration of strength building exercises aligned with breath. As the breath slows down, so does the mind. As the mind slows down, we can cast out negative thoughts and fears that overshadow our faith. As we begin to clear out our doubts and fears, we can renew our minds and embrace all of God’s promises to us. Can we do this without yoga? Absolutely! The real question is, “Do we have too?” Absolutely not! Many people, as well as Christians flock to yoga several times a week, not just for the physical benefits, but the mental benefits as well. Yoga provides another opportunity for quelling the mind and centering the soul. Yoga can be a moving meditation to God. For me and many other Christians, that is exactly what it is.

I’m not saying that all types of yoga should be practiced. There are some yoga classes that most Christians wouldn’t be comfortable in and thank God that we have the Holy Spirit to help us discern this. But in the same light, there are some books we should avoid, some music we shouldn’t listen to, and some foods we shouldn’t eat. Does that mean we should ban the whole darn lot of them? No, just use good judgment.

The only thing better than yoga, is yoga that openly honors Jesus Christ! How delightful it would be to walk in a yoga studio with a huge cross and scripture on the wall? How awesome it would be to give glory and honor to God for every movement and thought as we progress through our yoga practice or to meditate on the scriptures while standing as a warrior for Christ? Anyone who condemns Christian yoga hasn’t practiced it. I can think of no better combination than yoga exercises integrated with God’s word and Christian principles. It is like the best of both worlds.

Yoga is just a tool. Meditation is just a tool. We, who love the Lord Jesus Christ and practice yoga or meditation, see them as exactly that. They are not our gods and we’re not confused or deceived by them. We are striving to love God with all of our heart, soul, and strength and if yoga or meditation can help us do this, then I say, “more power to us.”

I take comfort in knowing that God draws us into his kingdom. I have heard testimonies of how God has saved people who were drenched in the yoga religion and who now openly condemn yoga with a passion. Yet could it have been their sensitivity to the spirit after practicing years of yoga that opened them to hear Christ’s voice? The Bibles says that “no man comes to God unless the spirit of God draws him.” I know that many of my yoga colleagues are not Christians, but I also know that they are seeking and through their seeking they may find the true and living God, the God who is able to really save their souls. They may not ever enter a church, but they might just be curious enough to go to a Christian yoga class and see what it’s all about. Let’s stop putting God in this humanly crafted and limited box. He is so much bigger than what we can see, understand, and perceive.

Roman 14:2 says, “One man’s faith allows him to eat everything, but another man whose faith is weak eats only vegetables.” Should we therefore all become vegetarians? Perhaps those who oppose yoga believe that “they” themselves lack the strength to practice yoga without being seduced away from the Lord. Verse 13 declares, “Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards the day [yoga] as special does so to the Lord. He who eats meat [or practices yoga], eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But the man who doubts is condemned [if he practices yoga], because his eating [yoga practice] is not of faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.”

The Bible gives us liberty. It tells us that we must individually live out our own soul salvation. Therefore let’s spend more time listening to what God tells us regarding our own personal lives, instead of dictating and condemning those who don’t sin like we do. Even Jesus said, “Who made me a judge or ruler over you? For I have not come to condemn the world, but to save it.”

To understand meditation & consciousness you first have to take a good honest look at the mind. The source of all problems is the mind.

Thoughts arise in consciousness, you identify with the thoughts arising and that defines your experience. This is the mind. It is your identification with the thoughts arising.

So many thoughts arise without you even knowing it. So many worries and troubles constantly arising and repeating and although you are not conscious of them, you are identified with them.

You are identified with the stress of the thoughts, the conflict of the thoughts and so that is your experience.

Let’s say you have to get your toilet fixed. You know you have to get your toilet fixed. But the thought repeats itself over and over in your mind as conflict until you resolve it.

The thought sits on your shoulders like a hundred pound weight telling you life is not the way it is supposed to be until the toilet is fixed and only then it goes away. And then the plumber says “I can’t come until next Wednesday” and that hurts because you know you will have to carry around that thought, that conflict of “I have to get the toilet fixed for another week.

And there are thousands of thoughts just like that arising so fast! Toilet fixed, dentist appointment late on rent, your high school sweetheart dumped you for the school bully.

You wake up in the morning from a state of deep peace and freedom from all identity and boom, the mind looks for something to identify with and there’s the broken toilet, the rent bill, the high school sweetheart and the bully and a thousand others within seconds.

And that’s who you think you are that is how you perceive life. Whatever thoughts arise, that is your experience.

Sure you get the good thoughts too but then that creates conflict and stress. You want one thought over the other; one experience over the other.

And so the remedy in meditation is not to try and have one thought over the other, but to stop the identification with thinking all together.

Whether through witnessing thoughts or placing your attention on the experience of consciousness that is here beyond thinking, it is to break that addiction to identifying with thoughts and rest as your natural state as consciousness.

To stop allowing thoughts to dictate your experience and instead discover in meditation what is truly here beyond the thinking. To realize your natural state.

Because your natural state is consciousness and the experience of consciousness is love, is peace, is bliss. Not some emotional experience on the surface but every cell of existence vibrating as bliss.

And if you can taste that once in meditation, then you can do it twice. Then you can rest in your natural state for longer periods of time before being pulled back into thinking.

And eventually, the duality between thoughts and peace ceases to exist in meditation. You begin to experience thoughts as energy, as consciousness itself. You experience the very nature of thought itself which is unconditional bliss.

It’s like you stop being involved with the lyrics to the song and just enjoy the music. The bliss of the music.

The toilet still needs to be fixed but you’re no longer wearing it as a hat. It no longer defines you.

You exist completely free of it as unconditional peace. The key is to learn to witness the thoughts, not identify with them.

An easy way to experience this state of unconditional peace is by listening to unique meditation CD that automatically awakens you to your natural state of peace. Check out the Kundalini Awakening CD link below for more information and free samples.

Brainwave Entrainment Why Use a Weight Loss Hypnosis CD?

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Have you tried and failed to lose weight with dieting? If so, you know how frustrating it can be battle with your willpower for weeks on end, only to fall off the diet wagon once again, and see all those hard-lost pounds creeping back on. Dieting doesn’t work – but what’s the alternative?

If you want to not only lose weight but to stay healthy and keep it off, the solution is to make a long term change in your eating and lifestyle habits. Everyone knows this really, but it’s easier said than done, especially if – like so many – you have a tendency towards emotional overeating.

Many people rely on willpower to make the necessary changes, but end up getting sidetracked by self-sabotaging behaviours such as bingeing or not exercising. If you don’t want to spend the rest of your life in a constant mental battle with your willpower, it’s necessary to get your mind on your side. Do this, and you’ll find yourself actually wanting to eat healthy food and to exercise – and having no desire to pig out on junk or be inactive. And one of the most effective ways to reprogram your mind is to use hypnosis.

Hypnosis involves entering a deeply relaxed trance state, in which the subconscious mind is open to suggestion. When you enter this state, you can receive suggestions to the effect that you enjoy eating healthy foods in appropriate amounts, that you enjoy exercising, and similar empowering statements. With some time and repetition, your mind will begin to adopt these suggestions as fact, and you in effect build a new belief system that supports you in living a healthier lifestyle and losing weight without struggle.

If you go the traditional route, you can visit a hypnotherapist who’ll help you to enter a trance and give you the suggestions. However, this isn’t always practical, and fortunately, self-hypnosis works just as well (and is much cheaper!) One of the easiest ways to reap the benefits of self-hypnosis is to use a weight loss hypnosis CD (or download).

Hypnosis recordings for weight loss typically contain soundtracks that make it easier to enter a hypnotic trance state, and may also feature verbal suggestions. Not all have the suggestions however, and you might want to create your own, in which case you should look for a hypnosis CD that has relaxing sounds or music only. The best ones feature brainwave entrainment technologies such as binaural beats or isochronic tones. These are repetitive sounds of specific frequencies which have been shown to have a powerful effect on your state of consciousness, and make it much easier to achieve the necessary trance state than conventional techniques.

When you have your CD, it’s important to set some time aside each day to listen regularly, so your mind will gradually come to accept the new beliefs. Using self-hypnosis for weight loss is very powerful, but it’s not a magical quick fix, so make sure you’re committed to regular sessions when you begin. It’s certainly worth the effort though when you find yourself adopting healthy habits without resistance, and find the weight melting off as a result!
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

Do you dream? Good question, especially if you are wondering about the quality and quantity of your sleep. A “yes” answer is what we’re looking for.

Remember the four stages of sleep? Phase One is the preparation stage during which your brainwaves and blood pressure slow and muscles relax. Phase Two is marked by further physical relaxation and increased brain activity including REM (“rapid eye movement”), which often leads to vivid dreams. Phases Three and Four are the revitalizing and healing deep sleep stages during which your brainwaves reach their slowest, most regular pattern.

Note that if you dream, that could be an indication that your body and brain are successfully reaching at least Stage Two. Stage One is important, but it’s not deeply restorative as are the later stages. If you never dream, listen to the message your body is sending you. This is a clear–if you’ll excuse the pun–wake-up call that you should not ignore.

A person who doesn’t sleep well enough or long enough doesn’t get the full physiological benefit of all four sleep stages. But also remember that your brain and body are not fully rested after all four stages have run their course just once. The complete sleep pattern continues cycling throughout the night, each time lasting about 90 minutes. Do the math: In an ideal 8-hour night, you’re likely to go through the whole rotation, including at least one dreaming period, about five times.

If you only allow yourself broken or short sleep, your brain will shorten or even skip steps of the normal sleep cycle in an attempt to squeeze its repair work into a smaller time period. As anyone who has suddenly faced a shortened deadline knows, this is ineffective and rarely gives good results.

Still not convinced that a good night’s sleep is important? Consider this. If your body is forced to skip the dream stage, you lose more than just one night’s sleep. You also lose the potential emotional or creative value of whatever your active overnight brain might have “dreamed up” during REM. Ever dream a story or situation so outlandish and vivid that you woke up laughing? a crystal-clear understanding of a process you couldn’t make sense of the day before? an unconventional way of solving a problem? What a great feeling to start the day with a smile, brilliant solution, or creative burst that your brain provided while you did nothing more taxing than rest!

If you’re not sleeping soundly, or if you don’t get enough sleep, it is the time to make a change. Commit now to taking a few steps in the right direction, starting with tucking yourself in at a reasonable hour tonight. Your body and mind will thank you!

Pregnancy and the growth of the child are nothing short of a miracle. Just two cells multiply into trillions of cells and form body parts and organs. There are billions of biochemical processes that have to be just right. To support this creation, female hormones are increased and reduced in production. This causes some problems to the mother — insomnia being one of the worst. Over three quarter of pregnant women suffer from insomnia, defined as lack of adequate sleep.

Besides hormonal imbalances, pregnancy specific causes of insomnia are – increased size of the stomach causing sleeping posture problem and uneasiness; back pain, as the back muscles have to bear the additional weight; need to urinate more frequently, as the uterus presses against the bladder and reduces the capacity; heartburn, as the stomach is also pressed; anxiety about the delivery and movement of the baby at night. The non-pregnancy specific causes like physical, mental and behavioral patterns that cause insomnia have to be ruled out.

The treatment for insomnia during pregnancy involves effecting life style changes and behavior changes. Relaxation therapy reduces anxiety. There are many relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, music and aromatherapy. The patient should have enough pillows in a large comfortable bed support her changing shape. If frequent urination is a problem, fluid intake should be restricted after late afternoon. A comfortable temperature has to be maintained and external noise should be avoided. Having a warm bath before bedtime will help. Some mild exercises like walking everyday might also help. Stimulants like caffeine and nicotine should be avoided. Taking too many naps in the daytime should be avoided. Having milk before bedtime will induce a good night’s sleep. One should not get into bed until sleepy. If the person does not sleep within a short time after getting into bed, it is better to get out of bed and do something else until feeling sleepy again.

Pregnant women should avoid using sleeping pills, as the effects have not been clinically tested for ethical reasons.

Time and time again, we seek ways to control our mind because we have been told that what the mind can conceive, the body can achieve. It is said that the power of the mind influences many aspects of our lives. This causes us to act and react in almost all of our daily circumstances.

It is also said that the power of the mind defines the kind of life that we have. Given these statements and beliefs, there is no doubt indeed about the importance of the power of the mind.

It is of vital importance for us to control our thoughts for whatever our mind conceives can bring about positive or negative results in our lives. However, our mastery of our thoughts can only be possible if we throw out the old beliefs and practices and replace them with new and better ones. By doing so, our lives can have a 360-degree turn as we set new goals.

But then, how do we have full control of our minds? Well, these days, there are several mid controlling devices in the market that actually work. These devices have been proven to strengthen the thoughts and the brain. One of which is the brainwave entertainment technology.

It mediates determinations based on our lifestyles. It allows us to welcome experiences beyond the ordinary. Currently, brainwave entertainment technology is the best device that can enable us to control our mind. With this device and the method that goes with it, we can improve or change our habits to more productive ones. Some people who do yoga and meditation embraced brainwave upon discovering it because they realized that, even the aforementioned were beneficial to them, they require constant practice and takes a long time.

So, how does brainwave technology work? Before going further, let me tell you that this will never bore us because only a few minutes after doing and using it, you can already get impressive results. the first step of course will involve controlling your thoughts. With all your will, get rid of those anxiety and depression. Always invite those positive thoughts into your mind while you eradicate the negative ones. Along the process, there will be some intermittent unusual thoughts that you will experience because they are stimulated by the increased brainwave frequencies.

As to why the output of some entertainment jobs don’t deliver a large variety, it’s because there is still a lot of research to do on this technology.

On the whole, I still believe that what the mind can conceive the body can achieve. And this can happen with the aid of the brainwave entertainment. Apart from personal use, the brainwave entertainment is now also being considered in many work places to achieve maximum positivity in the workplace.

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

Brainwave Entrainment Change Your Mind With The Advanced Technology Of Brainwave Entrainment

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Brainwave entrainment has been applied to end up into certain end results through usage of technology. It is known that there exist brainwave patterns which are produced as the brain continues to generate electrical signals. These signals, known as brainwaves, will allow the brain to communicate with each other. The amount of electricity can only be measured through the use of equipment, for example the Electronencephalograhy (EEG) Device. Brainwave entrainment can be used to help change your mind to focus on new things that have been induced before.

Brainwaves work at different frequencies. It has been known that the brain can be induced into a certain targeted brainwave frequency through the use of brainwave entrainment. This is used to help achieve certain end results such as helping someone to fall sleep. The knowledge on the frequency, and which can help to change your mind, is very necessary because you need to understand what frequencies must achieve the end results that you want. In addition, understanding the impact of the brainwaves in acquiring the end results you want is a very important step. You will need to be acquainted with the knowledge on how you will achieve the various brainwaves frequencies if you are geared towards applying them for your help.

Different types of brainwave frequencies have been studied. Beta operates at 12hz to 38hz which is necessary for alert activities. It dominates the state of mind during waking hours. The brain enters a more relaxed and at times a sluggish state when the brainwaves fall below the beta threshold. The beta frequency can be utilized to help increase the mental alertness. 8hz to 11hz is a threshold for the alpha type of brainwave frequency. This will dominate the brain when you are awake though not mentally active for instance when you are sitting and relaxing. This type is activated for example when you are watching the TV, and is very good one for meditating. It can be induced to help you meditate.

When a person first falls asleep, he or she enters the Theta frequency (3hz to 8hz) and the state is also required for dreaming. In a ‘altered state of consciousness’, theta has been noted in many meditators. For falling deep asleep, 0.2hz to 3hz frequencies (also known as delta) is experienced. At delta wave, there are some meditators that can retain awareness.

There are other frequencies that have been observed to induce body and achieve certain responses. A famous experiment carried out by physicist Christiaan Huygens indicated that despite the initial unsynchronization of two clock pendulums, they always synchronized with each other. Brainwave entrainment can help you change your mind because the mind will begin to synchronize with a given frequency when a person listens to a sound of a given frequency. This means that Brainwave entrainment is all about inducing the brain by making a sound at a given frequency which the mind will follow. There are many tools that have been devised for this, and which will allow you to achieve these end results. These products can be bought from professionals.

Meditation music is music performed to aid in the practice of meditation. It can have a specific religious content, but also more recently has been associated with modern composers who use meditation techniques in their process of composition, or who compose such music with no particular religious group as a focus.

On last April 21st I went on a trip to Aurangabad, the city of history and culture, former capital of the Mughal Empire and home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Aurangabad was every bit as I expected her to be, and then some more.

Took a bus from Pune on that fateful Thursday evening and reached Aurangabad at around 11PM. Thankfully hotel booking was already done. It took around 10 minutes to reach the hotel from bus stand by Auto. And it was time to sleep as next day was going to be hectic.

We rented a car next morning with the plan to visit 5 of the most prominent spots on that very same day. They would be Panchakki, Biwi Ka Maqbara, Ghrishneswar Temple (One of the 12 Jyotirlingas situated in India), Ellora caves and last but not the least Daulatabad Fort.

We started at around 10:30 Am. There are 17 gates or “Darwajas” scattered around the Aurangabad town built in different times. Previously there were 18 but one could not bear the brunt of time any more and broke down few years back. While on the way to the main spots, you will be able to see some of them, can even get out an click a few pic as some of the gates are very nicely built and also bears the evidence of time on their bodies. One can not help but imagine ancient monarchs passing through them on their majestic elephants and horses and people standing in line saluting and greeting them. And now few centuries later, you are passing through them on a fast moving, chauffeur driven, motorized vehicle feeling the least bit enthralled. Time does pass by so fast! But thankfully such structures will always be there to remind us of times forgotten.

Shortly we reached our first destination, the Panchakki. It is near the Mahmood Darwaza, one of the 17 gates. Built mostly during the 1695, Panchakki means Water Mill. Water is kept in a large reservoir, and is made to fall on the mill from quite high. It drives the grinding stone that prepared flour to feed the pilgrims and army men. Excess water is let into the Kham river. The building houses a mosque of Baba Musafir Shah, a sufi saint. It contains some other graves as well and a there is a huge Banyan tree in the front of the entire yard. One large hall is built that uses the bottom of the reservoir as its ceiling. This keeps the hall cool during summer and Pilgrims gathered in that hall during summertime, and they still do. In a museum, some articles used by Musafir Shah and his disciples are kept. It takes around half an hour to finish the visit of Panchakki. One has to be amazed by the application civil engineering in a structure dating back almost three and a half centuries.

The next destination was Biwi ka Maqbara. A mausoleum erected by Mughal Emperor Azam Shah as a tribute to his mother. Due to its resemblance with Taj Mahal, it is often referred to as Replica Taj Mahal or Taj of the Deccan. From a distance, it looks really majestic and a lot like the Taj itself. The main structure based on a hexagonal structure while four minarets cover the angles. The canal in the front used to contain water once. Now it only does during rainy season, it is said that it enhances its beauty many times.

The way to the top and front of the main structure is accessed using narrow stairs. View of the surrounding is quite good from that height and you can easily get distracted by it for a minute or two. The main burial chamber must be entered bare feet as it houses the grave of the late empress Rabia Durrani. Upon entering the main hall, you reach a circular balcony. The grave is located at bottom center. There are beautiful designs on the walls and ceiling. Strategically created windows which let only part of the light pass, creates a dramatic ambiance at times. Some pigeons were nestled really cozily in the corners of the chamber.

There are nice ornamentation on the outside walls and doors itself. There was renovation work going on hence some parts were inaccessible. Most the structure however was open and provided some good opportunities for photo shoot. All in all the experience of Bibi ka Maqbara was good, but would have been really good if the sanctity of the mausoleum could be preserved a little more. Constant chatters and too much of crowd kind of dulled the surreal atmosphere that could grow in such a monument.

After that we had a quick lunch and was on the way to the Ellora Caves. One of the most famous series of caves that contain sculptures created by Hindu, Buddhist and Jain devotees. There are total 34 caves spanning across a 4 kilometer diameter. Among them cave no. 16 is the biggest and most popular. It houses the famous Kailashnath temple. This cave is the biggest and contains numerous sculptures along with the temple. The sculptures include that of Shiva Parvati, Ravana, Viahnu and other gods, Different animals (Mostly Elephants) etc. Observing this cave completely takes around one hour itself. Upon entry, towards the left there is balcony at the top which makes for a good photo shooting place. Since the insides are dark, flash must be used for photographs.

As you start to observe the sculptures, it does not take long before you immerse in the beauty of them. Almost fifteen centuries ago, a bunch of men equipped with only hammer and chisel, cut down hole mountains to create timeless sculptures to honor their gods. A long time has passed, but the minute details in their work are still awe inspiring. The goddesses are beautiful, the gods are sombre, the animals are beastly, the rakshasas are devilish, not one place you will find, where you can say the work was inept. The Shiva-parvati statue is one to definitely look at. Also the sculpture where ‘Nrisinghavatar’ is killing ‘Hiranyakshipu’ is breath taking. I doubt there are many such sculptures in India.

In the center of the cave yard, stairs go up to the Kailashnath temple. The Kailashnath Lingam is situated inside a dark cave while hundreds of devotees throng the place. Taking photographs is allowed but getting a clear shot may take some time due to the crowd and lack of light. Right opposite the cave temple, is a statue of Bhringi, one of Lord Shiva’s two mounts. There are some pillars with beautiful carvings all around the cave. After the 16th cave, most of the other caves are smaller and some are lacking any sculptures inside them. One most notable is Ravan ki Khai (Cave no 14) which has a sculpture of Ravan trying to lift Mt. Kailash. Among others, cave no.1 (Vishvakarma Cave) is a notable Buddhist cave containing a Chaitya, and beautiful carvings on the ceiling.

After we had seen through all the caves we were on our way to the Ghrishneshwar Temple. On of the Jyotirlingas of India, Ghrishneshwar imposes some strict rules on men. First of all no photographs must be taken in and around the temple. I did manage to sneak a shot of the outside of the temple though:P Once inside we had to remove our shirts, vests and belts to be able to offer our offerings to the god.

The temple took no more than 30-45 minutes to cover, if not less. By this time, the sun was slowly moving towards the west horizon with the daylight fading. This information is critical as our next destination was the Daulatabad Fort, and we had to complete the climb and descent before dark as there are no lights in the fort or the way up. People were climbing with electronic torches but we took the challenge and decided to complete the tour before dusk.

Daulatabad fort was one of the most impregnable forts all over the world. Protected by long walls, and a moat, this fort had never seen a battle. More about the fort here. The climb to the top of the fort consists of about 930 stony steps. Just after the entrance there are 4-5 cannons kept. We decided to postpone the photo shoot till we got back. Then started the steps and ascent. Sometimes there will be long ground to cover between two steps. This gave a chance to catch our breath. However the road and steps are not well maintained and might make for a difficult trek. Some distance on the way, to the right, was Chand Minar. A minar made from red stones, was erected by Ala-Ud-Din Bahamani to celebrate his capturing the fort. It is 210m is height and gave us some shooting opportunities.

After chand minar, there are few excitements until you get to the top. We had to trudge to pitch black mazes and labyrinths at some places. The steps can be very steep at times. Also crossed a draw bridge on the way. The water beneath once used teem with crocodiles, ready to gobble up any enemy or traitor thrown in. Thankfully none are kept in these modern times. The water we took with us was consumed very fast. But the climb in itself should be pretty fast and we were almost at the top in about half an hour. The Chand Minar looks like a small red candle from that height and gives you and idea how far and high you have come. The final climb to the utmost top is treacherous as the steps are narrow and steep and almost broken. Upon reaching the top, there is a big cannon, that used to protect the fort’s perimeters centuries back. Now it only lies there like an aged crocodile, unable to hunt its prey, and waiting for the final moment to come.

There is also a tomb of one sage over there. The view of the town from top is not as breathtaking as we expected. In fact we were a little disappointed but it may turn greener and better during the rainy season. Chand Minar looks just a little thicker than a matchstick at this point. We took some photographs and started our descent. Still lots of daylight left and we were confident about making it down in time. On the way down we lost our way in the dark maze and went round in the same place, twice. But soon recovered and was on our track. Some photographs of the cannons at the starting were in order and we completed that in about 15 minutes. Soon our car started towards the hotel. We had hurting legs, thirsting throats, unkempt and dusty hair and cloths, but gleaming eyes telling the story of a day well spent. A day when we witnessed and touched a small part of the rich history of our beautiful country.

Next day was to be hectic as well as we had to travel to the Ajanta Caves. It is about 110 kms from Aurangabad and usually takes a whole day’s plan. We booked a car from the hotel for 1600/- and left at around 11:15 in the morning. There were some more gates on the way namely, Rangin Darwaja, Delhi gate, Bhadkal gate etc. We reached Ajanta at around 1:15. upon reaching we had to take a bus of Archaeological Survey of India to the starting of the caves. There from the counter we took the tickets and started climbing towards the caves.

Ajanta is a series of 29 caves consisting Buddhist paintings and sculptures. Caves 1,2 and 16 contain the paintings and to visit them we had to take separate light passes. However flash photography is prohibited in all of the caves. Cave 1 consists the most famous paintings Padmapani and Bajrapani. Age has taken its toll on all the paintings but still the beautiful coloring and detailing created during 2nd BC is enough to spellbound any one by its magic. Those people are lucky who visited these caves during their full glory and marvelled at their grandeur.

Ajanta being Buddhist caves, contains chaityas in many of them. Also sitting sculptures of meditating Buddha, teaching Buddha, praying Buddha are also pretty common. Most of the caves have numerous small beautiful engravings and sculptures. Cave ceiling’s have been cut as ‘Mandaps’, and pillars carved as though decorated with flowers. Sculptures of ‘Kinnars’ and ‘Yakshas’ are also abound. Cave no. 24 is the biggest but unfinished. It took us around 2 hours to complete viewing all the caves. The caves close at 5 PM so that time should be kept in mind. The beauty and somberness of the caves were breathtaking. Many of the caves would warrant revisiting them and that we did. Especially the caves containing the paintings were worth the second look.

Some of the statues convey a meaning towards life. The overhead beams carried on the back of lonely ‘Yakshas’ show fatigue but when they are carried by ‘Kinnar’ couples, they show bliss. It tells us that burden of life could be really heavy when carried alone but a jiffy when sharing it with others. The sculptures, created with Da Vinci-esque precision shows the exact body structures while carrying a load. So both design wise and meaning wise these sculptures are truly magnificent. Also the details in the painting of the queen fainting from the news of the King’s death in battle, in cave no 16, is another one to savour. The minute details in dressing and body postures are unbelievable to have been done in an age so ancient. The huge Buddha statues have even their toenails created with scrupulous perfectionism. One of the pillars in a cave (might be cave no 11, can’t remember) creates tabla like music when knocked with the hand. The guards should be happy to tell you the location.

We had some Vadapao after coming down and started towards the hotel. this trip concluded our journey to Aurangabad for that time. We had a great time in those two days, felt like experiencing a different era altogether. We had a bus to catch next day, but it took a long time for the marvels of Ajanta to vanish from my mind and let me sleep that night.

Ever wake up in the morning and want to sleep more? Many people deprive themselves of good quality sleep and end up like walking zombies. They easily fall victim to the caffeine fix by downing cups of coffee and reaching for chocolate, sweets and biscuits to perk themselves up. (Sounds like you?)

How does sleep impact on belly fat loss?

The quality and quantity of sleep is crucial for maintaining an optimal hormonal balance and regulating other body processes. Two specific hormones affected are leptin (controls satiety) and ghrelin (controls hunger). Lack of sleep lowers leptin levels and increases appetite. Sleep deprivation also increases ghrelin levels and stimulates appetite. The combined devastating effects of these 2 hormones are overeating, weight gain and an expanding waistline.

You may know that your body burns less calories when you are asleep. But does this mean you sleep less? No! If you sleep 3 hours less, then you have 3 hours extra to consume more calories. By sleeping the recommended 8 hours a night, you may experience belly fat loss as a result of consuming less calories.

How do you feel when you are sleep deprived? Tired, lethargic, groggy and inattentive? If you are not mentally and physically fit, you are likely to skip your workout and eat mostly sugary or carbohydrate foods. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels make you feel worse. You become more tired and cranky! Getting sufficient sleep helps you stick to your regular workout and healthy eating habits more easily.

Here are some tips on how to have a good night’s sleep.

1. Have your last caffeinated beverage by noon. Herbal teas are fine and some of them (chamomile and mint) have relaxing and calming effects.

2. Don’t watch TV before bedtime. Instead, read a book can help you relax and fall asleep easier.

3. Avoid intense exercise 3-4 hours prior to bedtime. Some people find it hard to fall asleep when their heart rate is still up and post workout metabolism is high. However, regular workout earlier in the day will tire you out so you have a good night’s sleep.

4. Clear and relax the mind before sleeping. Most people tend to think too much about work and daily stresses while in bed. These thoughts may manifest into dreams that disrupt sleep. Yoga, meditation, tai chi, massage, warm bath, walking and listening to soothing music are some of the ways to relax the mind, body and soul.

There are other ways to have a good night’s sleep but please take a natural approach. Don’t pollute your body with sleeping pills or drugs. If your nutrition and workout program are in order, sleep may just be the missing link in your effort to lose belly fat.
