Let us create a new mind! This year we should be pursuing new things and thinking new thoughts. Many of us women are plagued with the EEF syndrome “Everybody Else First”. Everyone else is given our full attention and this is driving us completely out of our minds. What are we giving most of our attention to? Who is consuming our minds? Who we are and what we will become is comprised by whatever we are mentally attending (focusing) or spending our time on. We must identify self-limiting thoughts, think about what we are thinking about, and learn how to manage our thoughts. The purpose of this article is to inspire and motivate us to take action changing our thoughts to create a new mind and reality this year.

What is a Mind?

According to Webster New World Dictionary mind means the seat of consciousness in which thinking, perceiving and feeling takes place. Why can’t we do the things that we want to do successfully? Our thoughts and feelings work together. Thoughts are the language of the brain and feelings are the language of the body. If we are thinking one way and feeling another way, our mind and body are in opposition of each other. Only when the two are aligned, we can experience a new mindset. Our present mindset uses old references (experiences) to verify and validate our ability and potential.

Many of the thoughts about our lives and ourselves tend to be colored by feelings of victimization and self-pity. Our routine, known thoughts and feelings perpetuate the same mindset, which creates the same behaviors and realities. If we want to change some aspect of our reality, we have to think, feel and act in new ways; we have to “be” different in terms of how we respond to experiences. We must become mindful of our thoughts especially the negative thoughts that hinder us.

How do we create a New Mind?

Change all begins with thinking! Learning (assimilating knowledge and experience) stimulates our brains more than anything does. We can change our minds simply by learning new things and practicing what we learned. Knowledge (information, data, and facts) allows an individual to put their understanding to action. We must learn to clear up misunderstood words in efforts to master subject matter. In a very thought-provoking book, “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose your Mind and Create a New One” Dr. Despenza states the act of mental rehearsal (repeatedly imagining performing an action), helps the circuits in the brain reorganize themselves to reflect our objectives. Many athletes and professional performers have given stories of how they mentally rehearse in their minds before performing their events. Remember our brains do not know the difference between doing an action and thinking about doing the action. The tools needed to change our mind are simple ones but we must practice them and make a commitment to be consistent with them.

Being Distracted

Our existing mind is comprised of beliefs created by habitual patterns of behavior. Too many distractions can take us off our square. We are receiving hours and hours of information about what everybody else is doing. We are consuming hours of television to find out what is happening, we are on the internet, on the phone (listening and speaking) about what “she said” or “what he said” to the point that we have absolutely no time left for ourselves. Sometimes these habits can ruin our lives. As human beings, we have the ability to focus our awareness on anything.

Pain Supporting Assumptions are Future Killers

Pain supporting assumptions are dangerous when accepted as reality without thorough examination. An assumption is useful in providing a basis for action by creating “What If” scenarios to stimulate different realities or possible situations. Most of our attention is spent on past events. Sisters, we are being triggered all over the place by painful and emotional events that have not been resolved. These assumptions continue long after the reasons for them have passed. They keep trauma alive. More importantly, assumptions make us generalize and personalize things in a way that makes them stay attached to our thinking. For example: If we experienced a divorce, we may think (personalize): ” I am not a good wife, I am no good, I will never get married again or I will never find a good man.” Depending on the different painful or emotional events that we experience, sometimes we may think (generalize): “Men are this or that, Women always do such and such or People never do the right thing or Good Men are hard to find”. We can go through life thinking these things, that are not true and it can hinder our development. If we bring into existence what we think, then our circumstances are reflecting our thoughts (positively or negatively). Our minds constantly search for data (new knowledge) regarding circumstances /events and when it finds nothing (no new data), it returns to an existing experience where the same (memorized) feeling is present (for coping purposes).

How to Create a New Mind

Changing what we think! (Awareness) – We must become aware of the things in our lives that are blocking and hindering our development (toxic relationships, toxic work and toxic people). We see many signs and signals of things and know who the people are that stagnate our development. Many times, we ignore their bad behaviors hoping things will get better. Toxic things are poisonous and too many toxins in our system and environment can literally take our lives (physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally). Self-examination and self-analysis allows us to come to terms with the difference (identity gap) between who we are (internally, on the inside) and how we appear (externally, image to the world). We must ask ourselves some questions. Who am I? What am I giving most of my attention to? Am I developing? Growing? Are these people (relationships) helping me become better or hurting my development? Am I valuable/worthy enough to give myself some attention? Do I know who I want to become? Do I have a vision of how that person looks? Some key indicators in measuring growth and development are when an individual is gaining new insights or new knowledge and learning new skills.

Changing how we act! (Insight) – New knowledge is a major requirement in creating a new mind. We must bring in new insight (knowledge) about who we want to be and know how this new individual is supposed to act (model and example). We MUST read, read, read and read everything on whatever subject area we would like to manifest in our lives. We are creating a new mind but first must find a prototype to follow. Who is currently modeling the new you? Try to find and gain information (from people about their experiences) that could help us emulate a greater understanding of how to be. Observing or examining movies, listening to CD’s helps to upload into our new mindset the information necessary to create a design to manifest our objectives. Only with new information, the brain can produce imagery or a vision of what we would like to become in our minds. Once a picture has appeared in our minds, practice or rehearse with the mind (being or doing what we see) to watch ourselves transform into a new self. Remember our brains do not know the difference between doing an action or thinking about how to do the action. Co-create and pay attention or focus on what we want to be. We can achieve anything our minds can conceive.

Changing how we feel! (Action)- In order to be successful in anything we must do something. Pay attention to ourselves. We cannot think one way, feel another, and expect anything in our lives to change. We must be mindful of how we feel at all times. If our mood changes, we should be able to detect what altered our mood. If someone came around with a bad attitude, we seen something sad on television, received some bad news, or we are in an environment that makes us uncomfortable, acknowledge that trigger. Our minds alter and or change with each thought that we have (negative or positive).

An essential part to changing how we feel is to acknowledge when we feel bad and become aware of when we are off balance. We can restore ourselves by taking action to change our moods back to when we felt better. Many of us know what we can do to feel better. We can call on our support systems (friends, counselors or family members), people who always make us feel better about us, those who keep us positive. Relax with music, exercise or meditation to find comfort and relief from situations. We must take positive action to change how we feel because this helps us move from defeated to empowered.

Why are we secretly expecting something different to show up in our lives, when we are thinking the same thoughts, performing the same actions and experiencing the same emotions every single day. Isn’t that the definition of insanity? We first have to change our thoughts and feelings, then do something (change our actions or behaviors) to have a new experience, which in turn produces a new feeling, and then we must memorize that feeling until we move into a mindset (when mind and body are one)! Closing and even eliminating the gap between who we are and who we present to the world is one of the greatest challenges we face in life. Having knowledge of self, conquering self, and/or living authentically can close the identity gap but the quest for change must start from within us.
