brain waves Sacred Love – the Power of the Heart is the Human Spirit – this is Will Power – Love Power

Meditation music is music performed to aid in the practice of meditation. It can have a specific religious content, but also more recently has been associated with modern composers who use meditation techniques in their process of composition, or who compose such music with no particular religious group as a focus.

Will power is love; in spiritual terms, love is will power. If one says, “God is love”, it means in reality “God is Will”. The love of God, the Will of God, causes the creation, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. Universal laws pervade our earth and our heaven. When a person says, “I love to do it”, it means, “I will to do it”, which is a stronger expression and means, “I fully love to do it with all my heart and soul”.

Never again clutter your days or nights with so much “busi-ness” and unimportant things that you have no time to “be in love” and “live with love”. This applies to play as well as work. A day merely survived, with money as the only reward, is no cause for celebration. In its purified state, the human heart is the hologram of the seen and unseen worlds; it is the part that reflects the whole. The heart is the point at which the individual human being is closest to the Divine. The heart is the centre of our motivation and our knowing, possessing a depth and strength of will that the personality lacks. When we say that the heart has an integrative power, we are not talking in abstract, metaphorical, or merely intellectual terms. The realisation and purification of the heart both opens a doorway to the infinite, and also results in a restructuring of neural pathways, a refinement and reorganisation of our entire nervous system, which allows the fullest expression of our human possibilities. We can so easily fall into the world of life to work rather than work to live. Time can rush by, we are so busy getting ready to enjoy life, that we are too tired to take advantage of it. To manage our life, for the benefit of love, we must master the power of will. This, in another language, means discipline.
No more busy work. No more hiding from love. Leave time, leave space to grow. Now. Now! Not tomorrow!

Love in action. The heart of Love

Discipline is the turning point. The pain of regret always outweighs the pain of discipline. Therefore, as we shift from the ego focus of pleasure, short term pleasure, toward purpose, dreams, and longer term results, the ego loses control and becomes the lion, and you to tamer, The vast majority of spiritual practices like yoga, meditation, tai chi and more, hold this as the most critical ingredient of the transformation between ego life and love life. Discipline.

Will is a different kind of power. Will acknowledges that there are temptations, that there are always old patterns, but that all the righteousness, devotion and fanatic adherence to dogma will never remove the source of temptation. An alcoholic is still an alcoholic while they are in a phobia about alcohol. With will power, there is a different approach; there is simply something more important to do.

Will does not rely on righteousness or goods that are separated from bad. Like the healing fanatic, who will tell you for hours about the virtues of organic food. No, that is the ego in blind fanaticism building dogma, separation. There are two sides to everything, good and bad, including organic food. But will is different. Will asks, “What are my long term goals, and what choices are best for me to make to achieve them?” Like, “I want to travel the world helping children”. I would ask “When?”, and you might say, “Until the day I die”, and I might say “When?”, and you might add, “Ok, when I am 90”. So now we got past a loose fantasy, with no detail, to a little more detail. Then we go for lunch and you are sitting opposite me, and the menu comes, “What are you having for lunch?” You think, and say, “Oh there are so many delicious choices”, and I would reply, “Not if you are serious about living until you are 90 and still traveling around the world helping children.” Then you might choose the organic salad, because it might help you live your dream. That choice is made with “will power”.

Will power comes from the heart.

A part of the body just beneath the breast has been labeled as the heart. As humans cannot grasp the idea of a heart outside the body, there is a part in this body of flesh dedicated to housing the idea of the heart. This area is most sensitive to feeling and has been called broken at times, although no physical break actually occurs.

Thought, memory, will and reason, combined with the ego, make up the heart. The surface of our ego is mind, while the depth of it is heart. The heart is a clear descriptor of our identity. It is through the heart that we feel ourselves, or know ourselves, as the ego prefers. Once a person understands the nature, the character, and the mystery of heart, they understand the language of their ego. So a real understanding of the ego, and turning it to work for you, instead of for itself, comes from the heart.

Will power is what makes the difference between our ability to feel an emotion (which is honesty), and act on an emotion (which is foolishness). It is human nature to have all kinds of emotional reactions to the world around us; these are simultaneously the human illusion, and precisely the traits that make us human. The experiencing of emotions over the whole spectrum of existence is what makes us whole, just as a musical piece is composed using the whole set of piano keys, not just one. The joy of life is experiencing emotion, but the suffering of life is to act, or legitimise them.

Action and reaction based on emotion are at the surface of life. Will is the junction between this, and the ability to live deep below this surface, in love. When we act on emotion, our will power (God power) is overridden, and we become like a leaf in the storm, driven by the comings and goings of others. There is no certainty in a life driven by reactions to emotion. While it provides the flavor and spice of life, it is an appalling guidance system for your decisions and direction. Will is, therefore, the gentle power that can honor the experience of emotion, but prohibits action based on it.

Ambition can be based on emotional escapism and egotistic attachment, or the human spirit and inspired calling. If we want love, then ambition based on emotional escapism is a complete contradiction to our aims. Emotional drive is sporadic, undisciplined, it vales “How I feel now” more importantly than, “How I am going to feel if I don’t live my dreams?” It is not the love-centred way of life. It will not magnetise the health and sacred love we aspire to give.

If you say you are going to do something in your life, and you don’t do it, you beat yourself up. Make commitments of discipline in your relationship. If you break them, don’t lie. Admit it. No one can beat you up more than you. But then work on more discipline, more will, more love power, by finding a better reason to follow your commitment. Being committed to something is all about having a good enough reason. If you love yourself enough, then emotional blackmail is not a good enough reason to be committed. If someone says, “I won’t like you if you don’t do that” then only if you already hate yourself is that a motive. But at this level of will, there has to be a dream, a dream you’d love so much that the cost of emotion is too high, that emotion is not worth the worry.

People get this when they lose something. I had a friend who had a heart attack. They were so not disciplined; they had absolutely no will power. Then, after that catastrophe, they became a health fanatic. A year later they were emotional again and eating junk. They were disciplined out of fear. This is not sustainable. In your relationship, find a dream that is big enough, that you would love to live enough, and then work out what the cost is in terms of lifestyle. If you aren’t willing to pay the price, get out of the way so someone else can live it. But don’t expect your relationship to last if you can’t find a dream worth living for.

After two or three shattered dreams you might find it hard to come up with real commitments for long-term dreams. Simply start with little ones and work your way up. There is a process in the last chapters of this book on dream matching.

The will of the human heart is an unbridled experience of doing something that you love, rather than something that loves you. Then you bring this choice making awareness into all facets of your life, discernment, and without compromise. Will is the heart choosing long-term benefit over short-term emotional expression.

Sacred relationship is not found in emotional drama, but in the wisdom of choices made, the sacrifices made in recognition of dreams and Love. If you do not have the will to choose wisely, then you’ll choose low priority activities to fill your mind. Because these are self sabotaging (they do not fulfill your dreams), then your lover will not be able to wait for you to grow up in love, they will probably leave you. If you are treating yourself as unworthy of love, unworthy of higher purpose, unworthy of long-term investment, then your lover will not treat you any differently. Remember that nobody does to you more than you do to yourself. Will is love, will power is self love.

Self love is found in the doing of life, not in the thinking of it. Self love is action, action of choices. Your self worth grows when you do things worthy of your own respect. Emotional drama and working on low priorities, working on other people’s priorities, living vicariously through children, is all self-deception. Nature will not have it. Nature will bring disaster, catastrophe and humbling circumstances to anyone who does not work on the higher priorities that manifest their dreams. If you do not have a dream, there is only ego to love.

A person who can say, “I love doing this” is far more rewarded on the cosmic level than the ego that would profess, “I love this, because these are the things I get for doing it”. Achievements last for moments, but life is a journey. There is no solace for the wealthy person who, surrounded with material items and victories, cannot smile in the face of a days work, or at the idea of walking to the garden for a few moments of reflection. It is in the eyes of loved ones where we find God, rather than the buildings we create to house them. It is in the doing of things of high priority to our dreams that the wealth exists, not in the gratitude of those we help.

Will is not power, although it is all the power that exists. How does creation function in the universe? The world? The answer is, by will. The laws of the universe hold all the chaos into a magnificent order. It is the power of will, Gods will, that all of the universe conforms to a discipline of just five simple laws. Emotion is the defiance of those laws. Therefore, what we call willpower in us, is more accurately, God power; and emotion is hell power. Will power is a combination of physical and mental strength. Our hands, with all their perfect mechanics, cannot hold a glass of water if there is no willpower to support it. If will power fails us, a seemingly healthy person will not be able to even stand. Therefore, fish do not swim with their body; they swim with their will power. And when man has the will to swim, he swims like fish.

Will power has enabled humankind to complete tremendous things. Will brings us to success, yet when will fails, however intelligent the person, they too fail. Therefore, it is not the human power solely that moves us, it is a divine power found in the human body that makes unbelievable feats possible. The work of the mind is still greater, for no one can hold a thought in their mind for a moment if there is not the strength of will to hold it. If a person cannot concentrate, cannot keep their thoughts still for a moment, it means that will power fails them, as it is will which holds a thought.

Rumi, “Birth, water, fire, air seemed to us as things, as objects, but before God they are living beings; they stand as his obedient servant’s and obey divine Will”.

We received a part of that divine will as our own divine heritage, and it is our consciousness of that will which makes it greater. If we are not conscious of it, it becomes smaller. An optimistic attitude towards life develops the power of will, while the pessimistic attitude reduces it and robs it of its great power. Thus, it is only ourselves that hinders our progress in life. There is no one in the world that can be a worse enemy to us than ourselves, for at every failure we see ourselves standing in our own light.

When the mind is pushed to hold one thought for a while, it becomes restless, because it is not accustomed to discipline. The mind by itself has no hesitation to hold a thought of disappointment, blame, anger, pain grief, sorrow, or of failure; it will hold it so tightly that you cannot take one of those righteous thoughts from its grip. But when the mind is requested to hold a particular affirmative thought, often it will not hold it, responding instead by saying, “I am free and I will not be controlled”. This is the ego fighting against the heart of will, the ego fighting for emotional freedom, and cursing the divinity of sacred love, dreams and joy.

You must teach your mind discipline by concentration, by the power of will, then the mind becomes tied in concentration to the focus of your work. A parent must be strong with a child because they have no discipline, and the parent must be that higher wisdom until the child becomes wise. A disciplined mind becomes your servant rather than your master. The thoughts of the heart, and the act of holding the thought in the heart, are both of great importance for the fulfillment of an individual’s life’s, and most importantly, their relationships.

Often a person will say, “I try my best but I cannot get my mind to concentrate, I cannot make my mind still”. It is true that they cannot concentrate, but it is not true that they try their best. Once the mind has become your servant, what more can you wish? Then your world is your own, you are the king or queen of your kingdom. Although some people will argue, “Why not let the mind be free, as we are free?” But the easy answer to this is to observe the life of the person without discipline, filled with emotional drama, maybe even a filled bank balance. They have lost the essence, they are nothing but living shells of emotion.

Self-discipline is that which makes the master of the self, however difficult and tyrannical it may seem in the beginning. Self mastery is a combination of discipline and applied will. It is not in vain that the great sages live in caves with devotion and great purpose. It is not something to imitate, but it is something to understand. Such asceticism is self-discipline; it is the development of will power. This is the turning point for a sacred relationship. To invest yourself in love is to have the will to sustain it.

There are those who would sit for the whole of their lives under the coconut tree and wait for the coconuts to drop. There are those who would chop the tree, so they own the tree. There are those who would learn to climb and bring what they need to their lives. Too many of us enter a relationship and then wait to see what happens. We buy the furniture and make the babies. There is no brain required in either of those actions, and we can have pleasured sex with 90% of our brain removed. Love is will, effort, and without affirmative effort, you wait for the coconut, and survive on nothing between.

You lack nothing if you have will

The best way to cultivate will power is by first systematically putting the body through discipline. It must sit in the posture that is prescribed to it; it must stand in a place where it is asked to stand. The body must not become restless, or fatigued, by what is asked of it. You’ll see this in yoga. The body must answer to the demands of the person to whom it belongs. The moment we begin to discipline the body, we begin to see how disobedient the body has always been. This body is meant to become the tool with which you experience life, not the reason for it. The body can be trained with physical exercises initiated by the mind.

The discipline of the mind is done by concentration. It can only take place after the body has become disciplined. When you wish the mind to think about one particular thought while it is thinking another thought, then the mind becomes very restless. It does not want to stand in one spot, because it has always been moving about without discipline. Very often, people tell me that during the day their most difficult time is the moment that they want to concentrate. At this time the mind will start to jump. This is because the mind is an entity. The mind and body need to be your servants, not the other way around. In order for you to manifest your dreams, your mind and body must become your servants in everyday life to fulfill your body with food and pleasure, and your mind with emotion and righteousness. They must act as you wish them to, in order for you to gain real comfort, happiness and an awareness of love.

There is a difference between concentration and silence. Silence is relaxing mind and body. It is repose and healing. Concentration is holding a certain thought before you. Further, concentration is the beginning of meditation, and meditation is the end of concentration

This is illustrated in the following two examples. What time do you rise in the morning? Anytime? Or in time to get you to work? The vast majority of people seek a flexible wake up time, depending on how they feel or what they did last night. This freedom, self- given, has a catastrophic impact on an individual’s health, worth, and vitality. If wake up time is fixed, then life spins around it. Time becomes a fixture, a marker in the day. Then, emotion is not the master.

Money is another example. People on the whole spend by impulse – emotional spending, retail therapy. These are rarely people who have earned the money in their own right, nor are they often the wealthy people. If you can’t control your emotion, you can’t control your spending. A quest for instantaneous emotional gratification leads to emotional spending.

Freedom does not come, as many people hope, from freedom to act on impulse or emotion, nor does it come from stoic rigidity. Emotions must be felt for authentic living, and will power is the ability to feel, and not act. We act for love, we act to create dreams, we feel for honesty.

Brainwave Entrainment Want to Improve Your Confidence? Try Binaural Beats Meditation

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Are you discouraged and need a way to improve confidence? Listening to binaural beats mp3s could provide you with a quick and easy cure.

In order to improve confidence you basically have to reprogram your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind controls about 90% of our daily activities and thoughts. When the subconscious is brimming with all of the negative thought and experiences that have accumulated over the years, then having strong self confidence is impossible.

No matter what we tell ourselves, if the subconscious mind doesn’t support it, then positive thoughts and actions cannot happen. The problem with positive self-talk is that most of this is done while the mind is in the fully conscious state. This is usually the high frequency brainwave level referred to as beta. These positive affirmations do not penetrate the subconscious, therefore isn’t any improvement in attitude.

The way to reprogram the subconscious mind is to meditate. The goal of meditation is to get the brain to slow its waves down from the high activity level of beta, into the lower frequencies of alpha and theta. It is at these lower levels that the door to the subconscious mind can be unlocked. Once this door is open, then we can go in and clean out the accrued pessimism, discouraging thoughts, and other negativity.

Now positive affirmations can be installed in the subconscious. When we have substituted enough good for the bad, then we can begin to improve confidence. When the subconscious feels good about itself, the conscious mind will respond accordingly.

Meditation is the way to get this done, but being able to meditate effectively is another story. This is where binaural beats mp3s come in.

Binaural beats mp3s are recordings of two different frequency tones that are listened to with a set of headphones. The technology is designed to coax the brainwaves into those lower frequency ranges for meditation. For those of us who don’t have the years of experience at meditating that monks do, the binaural beats recordings are a blessing.

Meditating while listening to binaural beats recordings makes it much easier to improve whatever facet of our thoughts and attitudes that we want to. All you have to do is put on the headphones, relax in a quiet environment, and let the recordings to their work.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

People experience stress whether at work, at home, or in school. And if left unmanaged, stress can cause emotional, psychological, and physical problems. Instead of simply letting stress run your life, you can overpower it. Where can we find practical stress management techniques?

At school, Student Services or the guidance counsellor will be more than happy to discuss practical stress management to students. At work, the Human Resources Department usually schedules talks on different subjects that will help its employees become more efficient, competent, and productive. And stress management is definitely part of this list. You can even find many articles and resources on the Internet that tackle practical stress management. These are the different venues where you can find valuable tips and techniques.

When talking about practical stress management, some of these techniques are actually very easy to do. Here are some examples of practical stress management techniques.

Positive Thinking. This can definitely help one to get rid of stress. If you stop looking at the bad or unhappy aspects of a situation and focus on the good and happy aspects, you will not be burdened by stress. Practice positive visualizations daily and you will see yourself improving, more happy, and successful.

Exercise. More than keeping your bodies in tip-top shape, exercising also relieves stress and helps you relax and calm your mind. Make a daily exercise routine which will be your daily outlet for stress. Doing yoga is a great way to exercise and meditate at the same time. Many people are becoming enticed to do yoga because it is a great way to relieve stress.

Breathing Exercises. Another practical stress management technique is breathing exercises. If you concentrate on your breathing exercise, you will start feeling relaxed and calm. Stress will leave your mind.

Time Management. Many people find themselves really stressed out because they do not know how to manage their time properly. They go through each day filled with a very long list of to-do’s that they forget to stop and smell the flowers. That can really be one stressful life! Create a daily schedule of the things that you must accomplish. Allot enough time for each activity. Do not cram so many activities in one day if it is close to impossible to accomplish them all. With your daily schedule, you will also see if you are already spreading yourself too thin. You can ask for other people’s help, if necessary.

Music. Listening to music is a great technique for practical stress management. Create a playlist of soft, calming music that you love to listen to when you feel stressed out. And if you are studying, try listening to classical music because of its benefits on learning.

Teeth grinding can easily turn into a habit especially if started at a young age. It can cause not only teeth and jaw damage but damage to the whole body as well. Bruxism, the medical term for teeth grinding, is a condition that is much like snoring: it prevents you from getting restful sleep and disrupts your partner’s sleep as well.

If you are aware that you have symptoms, you should stop teeth grinding as soon as possible. Ignoring symptoms can make the condition worse. Since the problem is both a medical and dental problem, you can consult with a GP or a dentist to help you stop it. If you want to go for natural teeth grinding remedy, you can use the following easy and natural methods to stop your nighttime teeth grinding.

Before going to bed, wrap a warm washcloth around your face. Bruxism causes rigid and sore jaw muscles. Using a warm washcloth will help relax your facial muscles, reducing pain and soreness. Make sure the washcloth covers both your cheeks and jaw. Practicing this every night can stop teeth gritting for some time and you can feel relief over time.
Munch apples, cauliflower, and carrot before going to sleep. Every night, munch on fruits and vegetables to exercise your jaw and gums. It can calm your mouth and relax your jaw muscles as well prior to going to bed. A relaxed jaw and mouth lessen the chances of teeth grinding during the night.
Stress can trigger teeth grinding. Alleviate stress before going to bed by having a warm and relaxing bath or pampering yourself with a soft massage. A facial massage is also good to relax your jaw. Massage relaxes the muscles on your body allowing you to sleep soundly and deeply.
Cut off from caffeinated drinks such as chocolate, coffee, and cola. Instead, drink a warm glass of milk or a relaxing cup of herbal tea before going to sleep. For added relaxation, light scented candles with soothing scent to create a relaxing atmosphere.
Exercise during the day to help loosen stress and relax your muscles. Instead of watching TV before bedtime, perform stress-relieving activities like listening to soothing music or reading a light book. You can also attend yoga or meditation classes to help you relieve inner stress. Meditation also teaches breathing techniques that could ease stressed muscles.

These home remedies for teeth grinding require discipline and dedication. They work slowly but help you maintain a relaxed and stress-free inner and outer body to help fight bruxism.

I was thinking to write about my daily step-by-step process which I do as thoroughly as I can to achieve optimum results and achieve a life of ‘perfection’!

Where do we start? Well I guess in the morning right? Just when my alarm strikes I usually stay in bed and do the 5-step harmonic prayer process (this is detailed in one of my other articles). When I get up from my bed I give thanks to everything and everyone around me. This ranges from the hot shower I take every morning to the breakfast I eat as well as even giving thanks to my eyes to see and my legs to walk as well as giving thanks to the wonderful day that is to come. I feel that being thankful and grateful is the most important process and when you start doing it everyday for the entire day; it will come so naturally that you will not even have to think about it! Practice makes perfect right?

I then go to work and during my journey I listen to 2 different recordings which purpose is to evoke prayer as well as harmonize with God. Both of these come from the harmonic prayer process and I feel they really get you in the perfect mood for the day inducing what you really want in life and feeling the power and love in your inner-self. When I get to work; I am very fortunate enough to work in an office where you are able to listen to music or whatever you wish since I do not handle any calls or need to speak to many people thus I listen to the foundations modules of miracles & magic which I mentioned before and find extremely powerful. The amazing feature of this is that you do not need to concentrate to the actual recordings and thus can do your work as efficiently, I deal with number on a day-to-day basis and I can assure you this does not affect me one bit.

Throughout the day as I revealed earlier, I give thanks to as many things and people as I can; I cannot stress enough the importance of this as not only will you feel amazing but also the results you want in life will accelerate like a formula 1 car at the start of a Grand Prix. I also suggest when working if you have in hand a PC to get the program called ‘Movies Mind’ which I will talk about more in another article, basically the idea here is that while using a PC you see images of what you actually want in life, a movie ‘your perfect life’ playing over and over again; I feel this is very powerful because this is the same thing like constantly visualizing thus helping you in furthermore in the process to having an abundant life.

Finally, after work; you can continue listening to the miracles recording or go on to listening others of the foundations modules and continue to give thanks and most importantly try to give yourself 20-30 minutes and meditate giving thanks to god, trying to harmonize with god and giving thanks for the wonderful day you had. When you go to bed, give thanks for the amazing nights’ sleep and for your day tomorrow being full of miracles and pleasant surprises.

I hope you found my guide to be helpful and thank you for taking your time to read it!

Thank you and God bless!
David

Those who work in the field of healthcare have known for some time that a connection exists between our underlying beliefs and thoughts and the functioning of our bodies. Dr. Herbert Benson, in his 1970’s landmark book, The Relaxation Response, articulated the concept that stressors can trigger a “fight or flight response”, an inner startle response that indicates we are about to experience an unpleasant event. Although there is a healthy fear that protects us from harms way, many times how one interprets stressful events and one’s ability to manage it, can affect the immune systems functional capacity. There is now sufficient research to validate Benson’s work, that relaxation techniques such a meditation, can have a direct link to minimizing the effect of a wide range of disorders such as high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, back problems, neurological pain, and headache problems. Relaxation strategies calm the sympathetic nervous system, making it easier for the body to heal.

In Barbara Levine’s book, Your Body Believes Every Word You Say, she explores how our thoughts and underlying beliefs about our physical maladies affect our auto-immune system which regulates our ability to ward off illness, manage pain, and promote healing. In other words, legitimate pain from various illnesses and somatic complaints can be intensified by the kind of messages we tell ourselves. Spontaneous self-defeating thoughts such as, “What’s the use, my body will always betray me and never get better.” can reinforce the pain cycle of making things worse. People with such chronic self-defeating reactions have been shown to create inner chemical changes and constricted blood flow which further erodes the individual’s ability to manage pain. How we respond to our bodily disorders, in terms of core beliefs and inner dialogue, may affect the outcome of our health.

Some time ago, I attended a presentation by psychiatrist M. Scott Peck. He talked with mental health providers about his struggles with neck pain, a problem that had plagued him for years. An operation resolved some of his pain, but he felt that there might be some negative underlying belief that was also contributing to the problem. He ultimately concluded that he was a conflict-avoider, lacking the ability to appropriately assert himself, refusing to “stick his neck out.”

Physical illnesses can be intensified by self-defeating underlying thinking that is a metaphor for the chronic condition experienced. For example, people with back pain may at times lack the “backbone” to express their thoughts and feelings courageously. Individuals with gastrointestinal problems may not be unable to “stomach” certain intolerable thoughts and feelings. People with headache syndromes may experience beliefs and thoughts about events that make them want to say, “Life is making my head hurt.” Eating disordered people may experience core assumptions such as, “I’m so angry that I could just vomit, or if I monitor my weight and eating habits, at least it’s one area in my life that I can control!” People with neurological pain such as inner ear disorders may exacerbate their pain by experiencing thoughts of panic such as, “Oh my God, here it comes again, that nasty, annoying pain. I’ll never get over this because the volume in my life is turned up too high.”

Anxiety, panic, and depression are typical characteristics associated with physical pain. The more effectively one manages these symptoms, the less troublesome the pain may be. Learning to cope with anticipatory anxiety by rationally responding (“Ok, I know that this pain can be troublesome, but when it comes I will do my deep breathing and manage just fine!”), or dealing with panic ( “When a wave of pain comes, I’ll just go with it. It’s not a big deal, my scary feeling are time-limited, they’ll be over soon”), and managing depression (“Just because I feel awful doesn’t mean I can’t do things to stay active and make me feel involved”) are important ways of adaptively responding to pain.

The following ideas are some guidelines for managing pain more effectively:

? Try to get you pain in perspective. Make a realistic appraisal. “In the scheme of things, how bad is my condition?”

? Don’t fight with your symptoms, it only makes them worse. The more you accept your symptoms, the more they are likely to diminish.

? Use various activities to refocus away from your pain. Dwelling on pain makes it more painful. Stretching, music, swimming, meditation, and other activities are important.

? Seek a multidisciplinary approach to your problem, if necessary. Get a team of healthcare specialists, including a quality physician, psychotherapist, physical therapist, message therapist or other providers of pain management.

? Develop a solid support system of family and friends. Also, there are many support groups in our community for people suffering from a variety of physical ailments.

? Remember, that the things we tell ourselves have an impact on our physical and emotional well-being.

As we look out at the vastness of the universe and the vast array of lifeforms it contains we find an ongoing movement toward becoming. Everything is becoming something other than as it is in its present form. Whole suns, planets and galaxies are changing and becoming. Life from the simplest to the most complex is also becoming. Societies are becoming. There is an impulse at all levels of existence that urges everything forward through transformations into something beyond their current expressions.

We personally experience this as we go through life. We are certainly not the same person we were when we were 5 or 10 even though we know ourselves to be a progression of that person. Our consciousness has changed, matured and evolved. We are continually not only discovering the edges of our potential, but we are even pushing the limits in exploring our uncharted potential.

We don’t know what we are becoming for the mind can only speculate. At each step in our becoming we are amazed at what we find and how different it is from what we imagined it might be. Even if we are not paying attention to this process it is happening to everything and everyone collectively. And yet we can wonder what would happen if we did pay attention? Might we become more full participants on the leading edge?

The word “Buddha” means “awakened one.” Awakening or enlightenment is a remarkable process that seems to happen to some spontaneously and to others only after long searching and practices. We may not be able to say why this happens, how this happens, or even what happens, but in the awakening there areprofound shifts in consciousness that can barely be put in words. When these epiphanies happen a person’s perspective on everything changes. Life is never seen the same again and the individual’s participation is also never the same. Everything is viewed in a new expanded context, and how a person plays in the context is driven by something beyond the individual.

Some imagine they have arrived at the pinnacle of human evolution, and yet others believe they have only begun. For those who have only begun there is an immersion in all that presents itself. Explorations of the urge to become expand into all possibilities which are now seen to be infinite. The realizations of unity consciousness foster an expanding joy and beauty. Some participate more fully in global evolution. Some delve into deeper mysteries of cosmic existence. Rather than the traditional views of all the questions being answered and withdrawing from life there are new questions to explore.

What is ultimate beauty? What is ultimate love? What is ultimate music? What is ultimate joy? What is ultimate discovery? What is ultimate fun?

What is ultimate potential? What is ultimate spiritual awareness? What is ultimate creativity? What is ultimate science? What is ultimate? This is evolutionary enlightenment to which there is no end. And why would there ever be?

Wherever we are on this journey there is something ahead for us and we needn’t wonder what it is, for it will be revealed as we participate. I’d love to help you on your spiritual journey.

You are about to embark on a trip to a foreign country. In the weeks ahead of departure, you may be excited in anticipation. Yet the morning of the trip, stress starts creeping in and it quickly builds. Questions pop up in your mind: “What did I forget to pack?” “Will I make it in time to the airport?” “Will the check-in go smoothly?” “Will my plane arrive safely?” And so on and so forth. What is going on? What is the source of this sudden anxiety and stress-generating concerns? Why are all these unfavorable situations being formed in your brain?

The mind is doing what it is designed to do: protect you. The process itself is based on the primal instinct built into all of us: fight or plight. It is designed to ask questions: “Is there danger involved?” “Can I get hurt?” It acts as a chess player, calculating several moves ahead, analyzing options; like an insurance agent, conducting risk assessment.

The problem is that this process tends to run wild. Your imagination paints the worst case scenarios and then starts to believe that these cases will actually happen. The result? Unrealistic and unjustified fear and stress.

What is one to do? The intellectual route, telling the mind there should be no reason for concern, doesn’t often work. Take the child afraid of going to sleep because there is a monster in her bedroom closet. Daddy is called in to explain that there is none. As proof, Dad turns the lights on and opens the closet door. And indeed, no monsters are visible. Yet this does not make the fear go away. What the youngster knows, that the grownup does not, is that whatever is hiding in the closet is very evasive. It knows how to hide itself the moment the door is opened by an adult. But wait until the parent is gone! The child believes the monster is still there only waiting for the right opportunity. Why? Because the closet monster is the fruit of imagination, residing in the mind where no physical or intellectual proof will drive it away.

As adults, we may have stopped believing in the closet monster, but in fact we just replaced that ogre with grownup demons that thrive in the darkest corners of our tireless mind. So the question remains, what is one to do? What happens when you realize that simply telling yourself there is no reason for fear or concern does not work?

Trying to stop your intellectual chatter and mental concern may not easily happen. You might find it impossible to rationally convince yourself that there are no reasons for worry. Attempting to do so may actually make the situation worse, like endeavoring to extinguish fire using gasoline. But what if a different route of action can be taken? A route based on mindfulness.

Try watching and observing these mental tendencies; examine how these behaviors are actually being formed within you. Start noticing how your body physiologically behaves under stress: the pace of your breathing, your heartbeat, knots in your stomach, a sense of tightness over your chest. Then observe your mind and thoughts. Initially this reflection will be difficult. In all likelihood, you will be at quite a high level of anxiety when you begin to recall your task of looking within. Maybe you will think about what to do only after the situation has already passed. This is normal. Allow yourself to shed any expectations that immediate change is going to take place. However, with persistent practice, your mindfulness will grow deeper and these mental activities will give way to a different, more profound and calmer state of being. Like sleep and meditation, watchfulness leading to a calmer mind is something that needs time and repetition to accomplish.

If you find that calm observation is not something attainable in your early stages of practice, an alternative strategy can help: conscious avoidance or — distraction. To explain this strategy lets go back to a child. As discussed, explaining rationally, and even showing physically that there is no closet monster, will not work. But what if, instead of wasting energy on disputing a fearful mind, the parent takes a book, sits by their daughter’s bed and starts reading. The youngster will quickly forget, at least temporarily, about whatever may be frightful and become absorbed in the story. The mind is distracted. Soon, she may fall asleep peacefully.

How does conscious avoidance apply to our concerned traveler? What if, instead of trying to fight the anxieties about “what if,” our voyager imagines himself at his final destination, at a point in time that goes beyond the trip’s immediate challenges? Maybe he is on a beach in Aruba, or looking at art at a museum in Paris, skiing in Aspen, or having a good time at a pub with friends in Ireland? It helps to shift the mind’s focus from the negative to a more positive state. Instead of being in a dark future, one dresses it up in brighter colors. And if refocusing the mind on the positive is difficult to obtain under a specific situation, one may try more simple methods of pure distraction: listening to comforting music, exercising, or even watching TV. This may not make the root causes of stress go away, but it may help reduce the dark grip of the mind to a level where other strategies can be more successfully applied.

As you begin implementing these strategies, you may discover unique approaches that work best. Whatever method you adopt is absolutely fine. Yet keep in mind that a spiritual seeker’s goal is ultimately being here now, experiencing the moment for what it is. Some may feel that a strategy such as conscious avoidance is unfavorable as it allows the mind to dwell in the future, versus in the present. Some may say this technique should only be used as a temporary crutch. A spiritual path is very personal. No one should be judging someone else’s way; as the Chinese proverb goes: “There are many paths to the top of the mountain, but the view is always the same.”

Stress will always surround us: health, money, love, travel, violence, etc. It is a fact of life. Even when one obtains, say, wealth, there will readily be reasons for other concerns. How we deal with the residual anxiety is a different matter altogether. Though seemingly without choice, we do have tools at our disposal to make our life of better quality. The two simple strategies outlined in this article are a beginning. Find ways – triggers – to remind yourself to apply the practice. You will discover that over time, your reaction to tough situations will start to change. You will become aware of unreasonable fears and concerns much earlier and eventually disarm the panic before it begins. With regular practice of mindfulness and meditation, the monster will no longer reside in the closet of the mind.

When my brain aneurysm was discovered, I was juggling a demanding job and running a home as a busy mom and wife. There was no time for exercise. Weekends were often spent doing chores. I was rushing through the ‘to do list’ of life, ticking off each item as I went, from early morning until I finally sat down and took a breath late evening. I was on this treadmill called life and it was not slowing down. Then came the aneurysm and I was forced to slow down. I had no choice. I simply could no longer do all the things I used to do at the same pace.

The surgery to clip an aneurysm isn’t just a one-time event and it has long-term effects. Once the brain is penetrated it’s never the same and I get tired quicker than before. The experience made me take stock in order to lead a more balanced life, and to make changes in order to feel normal and healthy again.

It was a difficult process as I learned to adapt my lifestyle and to accept the ‘new me’. I’m naturally driven and goal oriented, but now that I’m used to my new way of life, I find it richer and more fulfilling than ever before.

I get to exercise every day. I have time to prepare meals and not just eat on the go. I have time to pursue my passions like painting and writing. I get to fetch my son from school. I go to bed early and get enough sleep to wake refreshed each morning. I stress less and I get to earn a living on my terms.

This life-changing process taught me a great deal. It’s given me a new outlook and perspective on life and on what’s important. I recognise that health, family and fun are vital aspects and they need time, space and nurture, and it’s truly important to slow down and enjoy each day.

There is a perception in our society that the longer hours one works the better their work ethic and the more successful someone will be. But research shows that working fewer hours and having life balance gives a person more energy, motivates them more and makes them more productive. It’s about working smarter, not longer.

Businesses are becoming more flexible as technology allows them to be open to the idea of staff working from home. They’re getting leaner with tough economic times and as they seek to outsource the human component to become more efficient, it leads to an opportunity for individuals to decide their hours and working conditions.

The reality for many people, however, is they simply can’t just give up their day jobs and make a go of it on their own. Often we are told by inspirational figures who have risked all to follow their dreams and reached great heights of success, to do the same, to go out there and just follow your heart. And when we don’t, because of the reality of our situation or financial responsibilities, we are then wracked with guilt of a life unlived. But maybe sticking to that job is the right thing to do, especially if you have a family to support.

The issue rather is that we don’t take the time to experience and appreciate quality in the small things in life, in experiences where we can derive our real joy and fulfilment. The stress of our jobs drain every last bit of energy we have to enjoy our lives and it robs us of quality time with those that are really important to us. We live today where everything is faster and we have more stress. How does stress help a situation? It really doesn’t change our situation; it only stops us from seeing and enjoying the good in our lives. We can still lead productive lives and be calm at the same time.

Change what you do in daily life. Bring some connectedness and peace into your life. Sleep well, exercise, go for walks, meditate, spend time with your family, light scented candles, play music, go for a monthly massage, eat healthy food, eat delicious food, enjoy quiet time, laugh more, say yes more often when people want to help, delegate more, take holidays and try things you’ve never done before.

I reckon a bit of frivolity by way of its very nature of being carefree, whimsical and merry, actually is very meaningful in life so we don’t take ourselves and life too seriously all the time. Do things just because they’re fun and you want to.

If you are struggling to keep up with the pace of your own life, here are some tips that may be able to help.

1. The 3 P’s – Prioritise, (be) Present (and be) Positive

Prioritise – write a list of what has to get done that day. The rest is just background noise.

Be Present – when you’re in meetings, when you’re chatting to your best friend on the phone, when you’re helping your child with their homework, focus on the task at hand and allow your attention to be available to them. Being distracted by the to do lists in your head or by whatsapp messages coming through on your phone is stressful, it takes away the enjoyment of that particular moment and it’s disrespectful to the person you’re with.

Be Positive – I do believe it’s important to be in a job you enjoy. Often it’s a grind, often we complain and join in the office politics, but a positive attitude can do wonders to how you approach your day and your job. If you’re grateful for your health, for example, then you’ll be happy that you’re well enough to get out of bed in the mornings and go to work. If you’re grateful for your income and the lifestyle it provides, then you become more appreciative that you have a job.

2. Diarise exercise as you would a meeting

Exercise promotes longevity and helps you feel good. If something comes up over that time, you’re simply unavailable. If it were a work meeting in your diary, you’d make the time to go and you’d decline any new requests, so why not do it for exercise?

3. Live close to work

I know it’s not always possible, but living close to work can potentially take hours off your day and it can increase energy and minimise stress. Driving in traffic is stressful and draining, not to mention a complete waste of time. You could be doing something more beneficial like putting your feet up or going for a walk. If living close to work is not an option, request you arrive and leave a little earlier. That way you work the same amount of hours but you miss rush-hour traffic.

4. Pre-cook dinners

Cook large batches of food that you can freeze in portions, for example, a chicken casserole that can be defrosted as a week-night meal. If you are currently responsible for all the cooking, get your spouse to share the load and take care of dinner at least two nights a week. Take turns doing the grocery shop or do it together to make it a fun outing.

5. Arrange a lift club

Share lifts so that you have some mornings where you’re not rushing off to get the kids to school. The school day generally starts earlier than the workday, so if you have some mornings where you’re not doing the school run, you can use that time to go for a morning walk, meditate or just enjoy a cup of tea.

6. Negotiate a bit of flexi-time

Negotiate with your boss one afternoon a week where you leave early or forfeit your salary increase for shorter working hours. I know that sounds drastic but cutting back may be a fair trade in exchange for a couple of hours in the afternoon to spend with your children, to run errands otherwise done on the weekend or just to slow down.

7. Go to bed early

Get enough sleep. Watching TV in the evenings is often wasted hours in the day. Rather just go to bed. It’s a far more beneficial way to spend your time, and you wake up feeling like a million bucks, ready to take on the day.

8. Be grateful for the small things in life

Be mindfully grateful for your health and for your family, and notice and enjoy life’s simple pleasures like a good meal, a comfortable bed and your home.

It took a brain aneurysm for me to slow down and enjoy the moment, but millions the world over are doing the same every day, in pursuit of a more balanced lifestyle. They are still hard working, they are still driven, they are still passionate but they are not ashamed to put family, leisure and personal pursuits and goals high up on their priority list.

Voodoo is said to have originated within the ancient African and Native American cultures, where the shamans, or the female oracles, conducted their rituals to ensure their spirit followed the path of their God, and could join with him once the body returned to earth. Before a person may become a shaman or oracle of their village, it was important that the spirits were able to enter the body, and that the body was strong enough to withstand the power that came from above. The rituals were a village affair, with dancing and singing preceding the important choices the leaders had to make. If the wise person proved their strength, then they alone possessed the knowledge that their God wanted them to be passed on to the King and the rest of the villagers. To be a shaman or an oracle, great responsibility is placed upon that person. After their initiation ritual, they must be on hand to connect to the spirits of their world at any time.

For the oracle or shaman to receive the messages, they must first be aware that nature has a spirit, and everything contained in the world must be treated with respect, just as they would wish to be treated. People from Voodoo cultures believed that the spirits of the ancestors remained on the land to go between themselves and the afterlife. In Native American Voodoo, these ancestors are known as Kachinas. Many were afraid that if they angered the spirits, then their lives may take a turn for the worse, and so they followed the strict laws and customs from their wise person.

Healing was a main function in the African and Native American cultures where Voodoo was practiced. In order to gain the spiritual knowledge for healing, the Voodoo wiseman must enter a trance-like state, before listening and watching for images pertaining to the questions. This trance-like state was achieved through their lifestyle, often using herbs, music, fasting, or meditation to improve their abilities in allowing the spirits to use their bodies. The messages are received, and then the healing rituals can begin, with the use of charms, fetishes or dolls, or simple administration of natural elements to the individuals. Being able to heal the sick was a main point of reverence in the wise, as they had to have the strongest spiritual influences to both diagnose the condition, and also the knowledge to prescribe the items needed to cure the individual.

Voodoo, while this practice stems from African and Native American shamanism, most often it is linked with New Orleans, a French colony situated in Southeastern Louisiana. New Orleans was originally a city brought about through the slave trade, with people from all over the world making up its population. Stories circulated from the slave trips of demons and spirits, and gradually a new culture was passed down from the foreign ancestors that mirrored their ancient lifestyles. The lives of those who believe in and practice voodoo are greatly led by the superstitions and notions that are prevalent in the community. They place their trusts in the spirits, and in the nature around them to treat them with respect, providing they follow simple tasks. Have you ever stepped over cracks in the pavement, or refused to look in a cracked mirror? Even sometimes throwing salt over your left shoulder after you’ve spilled it? These quirks are very much a part of the ancient voodoo curses of Africa, Native American practices, and also Catholicism, which was making its way across America at that time.

The voodoo priests and priestesses of New Orleans have many practices they follow, from their use of dispensing herb pouches for illnesses, or for the creation of voodoo dolls. The voodoo doll has many different uses in other cultures, but for the people of New Orleans it was said to be used for retribution purposes, or for the healing of the customer when they cannot give their time for long periods. The doll is usually a cloth figure, with a part of the user (such as a lock of hair, or a piece of clothing) to ensure that the figure is securely linked. The ritual taking place can then continue without the target present, and the effects can be witnessed either immediately, or a few days after. The voodoo doll has also been used to send messages to the spirit world, either to be sent on to another person, to ask for guidance, or to give thanks for the life they lead, to ensure that nature rewards them.

During the time when many people converted to Catholicism, Voodoo was seen as an attack on their faith, and practitioners were forced underground, although many still attended Mass as they had done previously. Many of these underground Voodoo practices began to include Catholic references, such as signs of the cross, or praying to the Gods and saints of their religion. The Catholic church decided that Voodoo was not a threat to their church, and that it is possible to live harmoniously with the two religions together. This mix of religion has not diminished throughout the ages, and New Orleans remains a large voodoo capital today.
