I am an Acupuncturist and Practitioner of Natural Medicine and here are some of the common questions I am asked by patients that are new to Acupuncture and are interested in trying it for the first time.

1. What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of ultra-fine, single use, sterilized needles into specific points on the body.

2. How does it work?

There is a life force that permeates all of the cells that make up the human body. This life force, or energy field, is called Qi in traditional Asian medicine and it is the basis of our well-being and health. If the bodies Qi is not flowing efficiently or if the Qi is deficient, it will lead to disharmony, pain and disease. The insertion of the needles below the surface of the skin activates the circulation of this energy, and thus facilitates the bodies return to its natural state of well-being.

3. What is a typical session like?

An acupuncture session is usually performed while the patient is lying comfortably on a massage table. It’s similar to a typical spa treatment where the lights are dimmed and soft music is played to facilitate a relaxing atmosphere. In most cases, on insertion of the needles, a slight tingling or numbing sensation can be felt, but it’s not uncommon for people to feel nothing at all. After the needles are place the practitioner may slightly manipulate the needles to elicit a stronger sensation and enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. After this, the patient is encouraged to allow the body and mind to enter the meditative state, where the healing benefits are optimized.

4. What are the benefits of it?

Acupuncture is most famous for alleviating all types pain. But it has also been proven to both enhance the Immune system and down-regulate the Sympathetic Nervous system. Which means it can be an effective treatment for any condition that is either caused or exacerbated by stress. The list is a long one, and includes many of the most common medical conditions.

5. Are there any insider tips about acupuncture that a beginner should know?

Improvements in well-being will continue for hours and even days after the session is over, and this effect can be compounded with subsequent sessions. So, for this reason, it’s recommended to follow up with 5 or more sessions before deciding if Acupuncture is right for you.

Did you realize there is a most powerful prayer for prosperity that you can make use to attract wealth and abundance right into your life? It’s a simple matter of transforming the means you see in your economic scenario!

Below is how you can do it:

To establish a continual state of inner peace means having the abundance prayer angels, if you will, on your side always.

You will have to reflect inner peace and function by it daily.

Perhaps you like to place on some calming music, a light perfumed candle with a wonderful fragrance, or anything else that assists you really feel like you are touching base with and finding inner peace.

When you really feel that inner peace, create a picture of yourself in your mind truly in a tranquil state and feeling that you own inner peace– that peace is in your power.

The Course in Miracles teaches us to “not be afraid to look within.”

So as you look deep within see the peace of mind you have created as a parallel to you financial security and begin to live that way each day.

There are numerous methods of reflection for envisioning this circumstance, yet right here are a couple of concepts to get you started:

– Create a picture of you residing in a gorgeous, big home on the beach with the blue clear ocean water rolling to the shore as being your back yard.

You are driving the car you always dreamed of, wearing the clothes you’ve always wanted, and so forth.

Think of exactly how you would certainly feel having the power to attract wealth and have the financial security to do the important things you truly like.

The more you practice this reflection principle, the more effective your power and ability to attract abundance will specifically be.

What you are doing is purposely calling sensations of inner peace to be the foundation for your life in this world, and the ability to attract wealth is of that peaceful yet rock solid foundation.

Instead of presenting a power surge of negativity that only signals lack in your life, through this most powerful prayer for prosperity you’ll be connecting to deep within you.

You will be reaching your true inner abundance and reflecting that inner essence about you to your material world.

– Next create a good picture in your mind of you never having a problem paying your expenses easily and on time monthly.

See how satisfied and content you are with loads of self-confidence, recognizing that you have the ability to attract wealth and to purchase anything you desire.

– See in your mind how you are living daily with no economic issues causing stress and anxiety.

You must practice this exercise, this most powerful prayer for prosperity, a meditation, if you prefer, continually each day.

Commit to doing this attract wealth reflection exercise at four different times in your day, and with added casual reflections in some down time you may incur.

You can do these refresher-reflection practices almost anywhere; merely shut your eyes, take a couple of deep breaths and recall some images of inner peace working for you as an abundance prayer angel aligning you to the ability to attract wealth.

Remember, you must be certain that you position inner peace what you are all about prior to you doing anything connected to your economic scenario literally.

Inner peace along with consistency have to come before any kind of kind of economic task, or else you may bring in scenarios and experiences you do not desire.

To prosperity and peace in your life!

Did you know that 25% of adults in the U.S. say that they are not physically active at all? This is a problem, considering that a lifestyle of fitness can not only positively impact the body, but the mind as well. If you are thinking about going to a holistic fitness training center but you’re not sure what you’ll find there, here are four common practices that you might be interested in.

1. Yoga

Did you know that of Americans who practice yoga regularly, 72% are female? Yoga is a popular form of alternative medicine, growing from four million practitioners in 2001 to 20 million in 2011. Yoga in America connects exercise, breathing and meditation together for an effective practice that often helps with health issues. Practitioners have reported better moods, less pain in their lower back, and reduced symptoms of asthma. A workout personal trainer can be helpful for individuals who would like to custom design a yoga workout themselves.

2. Massage

When people find out that their fitness routine can include massage, getting into shape doesn’t seem so bad. Why is massage often a part of holistic healing therapies? Massage serves many functions other than just feeling good. The manipulation of connecting tissue and deeper muscle layers can help healing, relaxation and well being, and can help relieve symptoms of sports injuries, insomnia, and fibromyalgia.

3. Acupuncture

Chinese medicine and healing practices have been on the rise in the Western world, and one example of this is acupuncture. Acupuncture uses needles to penetrate the skin and stimulate parts of the body. Needles vary in length from about 12 to 130 millimeters. The pain of the procedure depends on the size of the needle and the skill of the acupuncturist, with some applications causing little to no pain. Acupuncture can help with pain relief, migraines, and digestive disorders.

4. Meditation

Meditation is the practice of uninterrupted concentration and has been practiced for thousands of years. Many people practice meditation alone by sitting quietly but you can also “meditate” with a group, to music, in complete silence, while walking or in other ways. Practicing meditation can have many benefits to the body’s physical state and overall emotional well-being. Meditation has been shown to increase immunity and emotional balance, decrease blood pressure and inflammation as well as promote an overall state of calmness.

Once meditating the atmosphere you pick is important, put basically it should be peaceful. At best you must appoint a entire room aside which you can metamorphose into a meditation space, though I deduce that may be grim or else even unfeasible for various folks, in which case put aside a special location inside a still room will have to be okay. Securing an area put aside used for you to meditate inside is highly valuable because through time the energy and ambiance around that area builds into a very calm and relaxing area.

Plus you must make sure that place stays limitless of junk, everything excess to meditation within the place would have an effect the meditation practice you begin. Junk draws the energy of chaos, which at times can be helpful to exert yourself alongside, although whilst you are disappearing into meditation especially whilst you initially begin chaos can be detractive and constrictive. The place must ideally remain very comfortable, with a pillow or else something alternative which could support your comfort while you meditate. Working alongside light colours, white, cream, and so on, would add more to the ambiance of peace and repose, the aura of warmness exuded by these type of colours generates an atmosphere of tenderness which makes easier and promotes your meditation practice.

Should you opt to meditate alongside music it follows that either a high-quality set of speakers in conjunction with a stereo put in the field of the background, or else if you are inside a residence that silence is tricky to get it follows that noise cancelling earphones connected to an iPod would be beneficial. The music itself is very vital should you wish to meditate to music, natural sounds would support shifting into a agreeable state of meditation, otherwise there is a good quality selection of calming relaxation music existing to or else even guided meditations. The focus at this time in conjunction with music is have it soft and calming, think and pick with care, if it promotes a deeper state of peace in that case it ought to remain enjoyable to meditate alongside. Try a number of assorted C.D.S or else mp3s and investigate how you proceed alongside various items, and get pleasure from.

Incense is a thing which folks possess varying ideas and feelings concerning, personally I do take advantage of incense and observe it works well and particular aromas can create diverse types of meditation. Selecting incense is very private though, a few favour earthy scents or else woody or else flowery, and you must pick out a scent which brings you bliss and peace. Of which a hint on this also be alert what the incense is made of, there are many of man-made blends available and they can create headaches, in addition living unnatural they lessen from your meditation practice. Selecting an incense which is purely natural will assist your meditative state and the depths you can go away to. Frequently whilst starting out folks go in favour of Nag Champa which numerous notice beneficial to a peaceful state, there are a variety of options available and Nitraj in addition do a huge selection. On a further supportive annotation, get a capable ash catcher used for the ash whilst the incense stick burns down.

Candles can be beneficial too, though good caution must be taken alongside them, be incredibly painstaking with them. As long as you can contain candles safely inside your meditation setting then please do take advantage of them, and I commend working with bees wax candles due to the purer burn they exhibit than paraffin candles which often create an objectionable odour. Again make sure you use proficient holders used for the candles in order to stop wax drops on carpets and alternative items.

In the key make sure it is a space which you can feel easy meditating inside, with some time practicing within the same place is going to assist you to take your meditation to deeper states. So relieving additional stress, bringing you improved calm, peace and transitioning you to a further fulfilling state of being. Wherever you elect to create your meditation space I wish you blissful meditations and joy, Namaste!

If you participate in Yoga you likely have a local studio you attend, but that might not always be convenient. Whether it’s because of the weather or a busy schedule (or cost–Yoga instruction can be expensive), sometimes it would be so much better if you could do your Yoga workout at home. Some instructors are even encouraging Yoga at home, to improve the powers of meditation and concentration, and to help with your flexibility. Well, creating a yoga studio in your own home isn’t at all that difficult or expensive, and just think of how much more relaxing it could be to practice your Yoga at home in a “private” studio.

While there are no hard and fast rules as to what a home Yoga studio must have, these suggestions can help you create a private sanctuary that has everything you need:

o Choose a warm space that has natural lighting. You can hang airy window coverings that can be used for privacy and to cut heat if necessary, without compromising the actual light.

o Keep the space airy and uncluttered. Keep it minimalistic with little on the walls. A couple of nice candles hanging on the walls is perfect. No more though!

o Consider adding natural scents to help provide a sense of tranquility. Lavender oil is a great choice.

o A tile, laminate, or hardwood floor is best to provide a firm base.

o You want a temperature between 75 and 85 degrees. You can achieve this using a small space heater or even a fireplace. Heat is necessary to help your muscles relax, and relaxed muscles mean you’ll be more flexible. It’s hard to do Yoga if you’re in the basement shivering!

o A laptop will allow a way to play your tranquil music and keep your routines handy. If you don’t have a laptop you’ll need stereo and a paper print out of your routines. Music is very important to Yoga so make sure you have a good quality sound system. You can also get CDs of DVDs to play, which will guide you through a Yoga session. Rodney Yee is a popular Yoga instructor with many offerings.

o A you mat is necessary. Consider an eco-friendly one if possible. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but sometimes cheaper mats are made from polyvinyl chloride, which is environmentally toxic.

o A small blanket can be nice to help you get into positions or to cover yourself with during the meditation stage. A strap and yoga blocks (or a thick book) may also be useful.

o Tea and food can be an amazing addition to your Yoga studio. Many love to include chocolate and tea as part of their yoga ritual, something to be enjoyed after a good workout.

o If you are religious, you can add elements that let you nurture yourself spiritually. Consider making an altar and placing objects that meaningfully represent the deities that are important to you. Tailor it to your personal belief system.

If you are new to Yoga, you may want to take a beginner course first. Once you learn the proper techniques and correct body alignment, you’ll be far more confident that what you are doing is correct. There are also plenty of online resources available for free online, and your library should also have plenty of instructional material. You should also learn the philosophies of Yoga.

A home Yoga studio is a great investment, both for you and for your home. You can enjoy having your very own personal Yoga studio designed to by you for you. Consider this an investment in yourself and you can’t put a price on that!

Emotions play a very important and tangible role in your healing process. In this article I am going to outline strategies and concrete ideas to help you make a shift toward bringing more healing, loving and energizing emotions into your healing journey.

Letting Go

Emotional stress can also disrupt hormonal balance in the body which can result in the increased production of abnormal cells. Feeling trapped and helpless are detrimental negative emotions so let’s look at a few situations where you may be feeling stuck and how you can let go and free yourself.

Your Treatment Plan:

The most important thing to feel positive about is your recommended treatment plan. If you feel stuck with a doctor you don’t feel is taking your needs into consideration or who is proposing a plan that you are not comfortable with and he or she is not willing to discuss other options then it is time to get a second opinion. Remember, at the end of the day it is you that has to have the last word and feel confident about your healing process. Recent studies have confirmed the enormous impact the placebo effect has on the outcome of treatments. Believing that your treatments are going to help you is therefore essential part of the healing process.

If you feel stuck with your plan, write out a list of different options. Options like finding another doctor, supplementing your plan with complementary healing tools, delaying your treatment to give you time to look into and research your plan, as well as other treatment options. Once you have a list of options (even if some of them don’t feel feasible – write them down). Then you can review the list, turn inward and make a heartfelt choice. Only then can you move forward, feeling more confident, involved and empowered on your own healing journey.

Close Relationships:

During your healing journey you want to make sure that you are surrounded by positive energy, love and support. Anything and anyone in your daily life that does not meet these criteria should be asked to support you in a loving way or to step back and give you the room you need to create a positive healing environment. This is your time to stand up and speak your truth, from the heart, and really ask for what you need. This is often difficult, especially for women who are used to being helpful and accommodating, but it is essential to optimizing your immune function. Everyone wants to help but sometimes they don’t know how or they reach out in a way that is not nourishing for you. Loving yourself and creating internal harmony comes first right now and as hard as it may be to express your needs, people will understand and respect your wishes.

Feeling Passionate, Inspired and Loved

Pursuing a Passion:

Doing anything that you are passionate about gives you energy and shifts your emotions in a positive direction. It could be as simple as taking time to read a book that you love, take a walk in nature or it could be helping someone in a way that feels meaningful for you – like participating in a forum and sharing your experiences.

Many cancer thrivers’ (people in remission who feel better off for having lived their cancer journey) stories have a common theme – passion. On their healing journey thrivers often discover something that they were passionate about and that they wanted to share with the rest of the world. Maybe it is a healing tool or product or process – something that helped and touched them deeply on their path to health. So be on the lookout for the people, tools or products that are or could have a dramatic impact on you and your healing. Be open to ways of potentially sharing this passion with the world.

A cancer thriver and good friend of mine has made it her life’s mission to promote the benefits of yoga and meditation to cancer patients and to the medical community. She is now doing her doctoral thesis to prove the effects of yoga and meditation for breast cancer patients during treatment. Her life has become energized with the passion of sharing the tools that helped her through some difficult times on her journey.

Heartfelt Inspiration:

Feeling inspired is another great way to energize your immune system. Read a book or some stories online about someone that inspires you. Watch a movie about someone you admire, buy some CDs by spiritual leaders or healers like Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer or Deepak Chopra. This type of support can help you feel motivated, empowered and it may also give you guidance in terms of healing and wellness. Another great way to feel inspired is to read quotes or poems or blogs by people you respect and admire.

Feeling Loved:

Remember the energizing effect of falling in love for the first time? What if you could fall in love with yourself? What better time to be your own best friend, to support, embrace and love yourself completely and unconditionally. You are the only one that can be there at all times to give yourself unconditional love throughout your recovery.

Loving yourself means that you do all you can to take care of yourself. This may mean getting a massage, listening to your favorite music, taking a relaxing bath – whatever feels nourishing for you. It also includes eating foods that nourish you and making sure you are well hydrated. It means developing a habit of listening to and responding to the messages your body is constantly sending you. Like giving yourself permission to get extra rest when you are tired, or taking the day off of household duties when you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

Asking for what you need from others and learning to accept help is also part of loving yourself. Often people really want to help but they don’t know what to do. Sometimes they will do things that actually interfere with you getting rest or caring for yourself. So try to think of what would be truly helpful and then ask for it. Like asking someone to look after your children for the day or to make you a meal or to take your dog for a walk. You may be surprised to see how good people feel about being able to help you in a meaningful way. You may also find that asking for help serves others’ needs as well.

Loving yourself is not only about taking care of yourself but it is also acknowledging and appreciating who you are at a fundamental level – a loving and caring human being. You don’t have to love or embrace all your bad habits – those aren’t who you are. They are simply learned behavior patterns. Try not to focus on the habits that you don’t like, instead shift your attention to nurturing yourself and being grateful for your good qualities.

One thing you can do is to ask yourself ‘how can I nurture myself everyday?’. Pick one thing per day that you do just for you. Think of your favorite activities, having quiet cup of tea, reading a book you love, going to a yoga class, complimenting yourself, giving yourself encouragement. Start a list and write down at least one thing you do to love yourself everyday. Remember, loving yourself is one of the best ways that you can positively influence your healing journey.

Laughter and Joy:

Often when we are sick and feeling tired or discouraged it is easy to feel down or depressed so it is important to consciously bring more laughter and joy into your life everyday. These emotions have a positive, healing impact on the body and help you to feel better about yourself and your future. Rent a funny movie, subscribe to a service where they send you a funny video everyday, be with people who make your laugh, or ask your friends and family members to bring jokes when they come and visit. Have fun going through the exercise of determining what makes you laugh and bringing more of it into your life.

In conclusion, your attitude and emotions do affect your healing journey. Being aware and consciously working towards bringing more joy, laughter and love into your life during this period, and always, is not only good in terms of empowering and healing but it is also uplifting!

Religion is always a touchy subject, and trying to tease out Van Morrison’s theology from his songs is neither fair nor possible. So I’ll tread carefully with these three Van Morrison songs, each of which can easily be interpreted as Christian hymns of praise. You may debate the “Christian” part, but Van no doubt taps into the Christian lexicon in these lyrics.

“By His Grace”- Hymns to the Silence (1991)

Hymns to the Silence is the Van Morrison album with some of the most overtly Christian tones, with versions of established hymns – “Be Thou My Vision” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” – and the sublime “By His Grace.” But it is easily Van’s most schizophrenic album – among the religious invocations are bitter music-industry rants, cheesy contemporary pop songs, straight-up blues, and epic meditations. Perhaps that’s why “By His Grace” is a bit unsettling at first, this “grace” sounds so mechanical, like something to be earned – “You’ve got to try for the kingdom… ” and the word “try” is used seven more times in two and a half minutes. This is an album of an artist in manic frustration. Struggle is the only way through, but the struggle can only be made “by his grace.”

“Full Force Gale” – Into the Music (1979)

Perhaps the most overtly Christian of Van Morrison songs, and to my ear the most convincing, “Full Force Gale” will hit you just like one. Into the Music is so full of heart-felt gratitude and redemption that it’s hard to take this as anything less than a hymn of thanks. “I was headed for a fall, then I looked up and saw the writing on the wall / Like a full force gale I was lifted up again / I was lifted up again by the Lord.” The one-two punch of “Bright Side of the Road” and “Full Force Gale” that opens the album is the sunniest stretch of any Van Morrison album you’ll find anywhere.

“If I Ever Needed Someone” – His Band and the Street Choir (1970)

So does Van use “Lord” here as an exclamation, as though addressing a redemptive lover, or is he addressing The Lord himself? It’s in the ear of the hearer, really. And it’s a fitting Christian hymn for someone of the latter perspective: “To see me through the daytime, and through the long and lonely night / To see me through the darkness and on into the light.”

Lately I’ve been struggling with my own sleep and energy levels; as I am sure many of us nurses have at one point or another during our careers. With swing shifts, working nights, and being unable to create a sleep-wake cycle I am certain many nurses have had trouble falling and staying asleep. I’m not sure why my sleep is disrupted right now as I really haven’t changed anything in my life. I also am not saying my sleep is terrible; I am just aware it could be better.

The reason I’ve become aware of this broken sleep is I feel more lethargic and less energetic during the day. This could also be related to the seasons changing and earlier sunsets we experience during autumn however, I am certain my restless sleep is causing my decreased energy levels.

This brings me to the topic I wanted to discuss: energy levels. We have more control over our energy than we think. People, in general, feel they are powerless over their energy increases and decreases throughout their day; falling victim to things like shift schedules, overtime, and staffing numbers. Fortunately, this is not the case. You DO have control over your energy. I want to share with you several ways you can keep energy levels balanced throughout your busy work day:

– Get more rest. Instead of going to bed at 1 am, and getting only 4.5 hours of sleep, because you stayed up late surfing the web or logged on to Facebook; turn off the technology and settle in earlier. Create a set scheduled bed time, as much as you are able to, and keep it. Get 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Make a space that is conducive to sleep which means turning off distractions, keeping the room dark, cooling the temperature, reserving the bed for sleep, and unwinding beforehand.

– Exercise. A surefire way to increase your energy levels is to actually do things that spend your energy. I know this sounds counterintuitive. Most times people protest, “I have no energy to work out; after work I just want to go home to veg out and sleep.” I promise you, once you get into a workout routine you will have more energy. As your heartbeat increases with exercise, more blood surges through the brain, more oxygen is absorbed by your cells, and you feel more mentally alert and energetic. Better-conditioned muscles make daily tasks easier. As you become stronger through exercise; so does your immune system.

– Drink more water. This seems to be my answer for everything; but it works! Water accounts for approximately 60% of your body weight. Your organs require water in order to function properly. You will flush out the toxins that slow you down. By staying hydrated you will avoid feeling sluggish, tired, and irritable.

– Stay away from “energy boosters.” Things such as coffee, caffeine, sugar, “energy” drinks, etc are all ways to send your energy levels crashing. Why? You take them in for a quick burst of energy, but then since they are not natural your body “crashes” down off of them causing you to need more to sustain those energy levels you enjoyed. Excess sugar causes fluctuations in blood sugar, which can result in plummeting energy levels. Although coffee initially raises stress hormones and gives a rush of energy, consuming several cups of coffee per day can promote burnout. Avoid unnatural ways to boost energy.

– Take some time each day just for you. Create a daily ritual where you take 20 to 30 minutes for yourself just relaxing and doing nothing (no watching TV or surfing the net). Read a book, listen to music, meditate, have a cup of tea, try a new yoga pose, or sit outside just being quiet. Do something that is just for you. Schedule it in as you do anything else. Make your “me” time priority.

– Go outside. Nature is a great energizer. Breathe in the fresh air. Get your dose of natural vitamin D from the sun. Tire yourself out with the outdoors. Run around with children, play a sport, or tackle some yard work. The more you are outside experiencing the elements; the better rest you will get and ultimately the better energy you will have.

– Breathe. Energy, in Chinese Medicine, is called qi (pronounced chi). One important way we make qi is by breathing deeply. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing is a simple way you can improve energy levels.

In the fast lane

From the moment your alarm goes off in the morning to the time you finally get to bed at night, chances are you live your day by the clock, rushing from one activity to the next, always thinking ahead. You eat in a rush (usually while doing some other activity at the same time), drive as if willing the car in front of you to go faster, work on several projects all at once, and throughout all of it are constantly thumbing, texting, emailing and phoning. You may even rush to bed at night, already counting the number of hours you have left to sleep until you must get up to do it all over again. Then you lie there, running lists through your head instead of sleeping. Sound familiar?

The speed of modern living is really, in my humble opinion, quite out of control. Progress and improvement are nearly always equated with “faster” and “more efficient.” We have fast food, microwave ovens, cell phone apps, and even speed dating! While you would think that speed and efficiency would make our lives easier, it’s pretty clear that it’s simply made us busier and even more frantic.

Fast is fatal

What does this all have to do with wellness, you ask? A lot when you consider the fact that stress is both the number one cause and the core basis of all disease. It’s at the root of degeneration and death. But wellness is not the opposite of illness, just as being alive is not the opposite of being dead. Wellness is an approach to life where one is truly thriving, not just surviving. Being alive is about experiencing and appreciating each moment to the fullest degree possible, not just being physically functional.

In this sense, rushing through life at breakneck speed and living in a constant state of over-stimulation and stress is fatal not only to your physical health, but to your emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The modern mantra of “faster and more efficient” actually robs you of your experience of life itself.

By slowing down, you actually gain more energy to do all the things that you need to do; but, much more importantly, you get to move through each moment in a calm, aware, fully present state. It is only from this state that you can truly connect to life and truly appreciate it.

I get it. You are busy. You have obligations. You can’t just strike things from your to-do list (or can you?) in order to make more time in the day so that you can move at a slower pace. Slowing down is not so much about doing less as it is about doing what needs to be done with peacefulness. It’s more about a mental attitude and emotional approach than it is about rearranging your schedule (although I encourage you to look at ways to simplify your life too, so that wellness takes a higher priority.) How do you cultivate this calm state without radically altering your life? Let me give you some simple ways to get started.

15 ways to slow down and reduce stress

The # 1 way to slow down is through breath. Take a deep breath in while counting to 5. Exhale slowly while counting to 5 again. Try it. Feel calmer already? How many seconds of your precious time did that take? Try repeating this breath-in, breath-out exercise just 3 – 5 times. If you only did this several times a day, during transition times from one activity to the next (like doing so before a task, a meal, getting in the car, or getting in a conversation), you would see a marked improvement in your overall wellness.

Here are 14 other ideas for how you can begin to incorporate slowing down into your rushed day:

Practice deep breathing, per my explanation above.
When you first get out of bed, go stand outside for 1 minute to breathe in the morning air
Take the bus (if possible) to work 1-2 days/week, using the commute time to meditate
Once every hour, take 5 minutes to stretch your entire body
Replace your office overhead light with an ambient desk lamp
Replace watching TV as your mode of relaxation with listening to soft music or reading
Take a bath instead of your usual shower
Instead of rushing to the coffee cart or vending machine at break, walk around the block
Pick one day a week to escape to a park, hiking trail or body of water
Promise yourself to only eat when you are sitting down
Chew each bite at least 20 times
When eating, do not work on other tasks at the same time
Close your eyes for a few minutes in the middle of the day
Light a candle in the bathroom when brushing your teeth and washing your face at night
Before retiring to bed, take 1 minute to stand outside and look at the night sky

Brainwave Entrainment Mercury – A Dangerous Toxin – What you Can Do

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Mercury is a very dangerous poison. Basically, there are three forms of mercury: metallic, inorganic and organic. Although there is considerable debate as to which form is the most harmful, there is abundant evidence that indicates the inorganic form (also called ionic mercury) is the most dangerous. Ionic mercury is also the most difficult to remove from the body and in particular from the brain. Fortunately, few people are exposed to ionic mercury directly – most exposure is indirect. Unfortunately, a number of studies have shown that the other two forms are converted into ionic mercury within the tissues, especially in the brain. Therefore, any and all mercury exposure should be regarded as basically having the same potential.

Many people have suffered and died from mercury poisoning. The following are two incidents of mercury poisoning that gained the attention of the media:

Mercury was dumped into Minamata bay in Japan from 1932-1968. Over 5,000 people suffered from mercury poisoning and 456 died. Children were born severely deformed and mentally retarded.
In 1971 50,000 people in Iraq were poisoned and 5,000 died after they ate bread contaminated with mercury.
Although these were dramatic and tragic events the largest sources of mercury poisoning are: Dental fillings
Contaminated fish
Vaccines
House paint
Almost 50% of dental fillings are the metallic form of mercury. The American Dental Society, until just recently, covered up the evidence that the mercury was released in vapor form and that 80% of that mercury vapor was absorbed into the body. Several studies have shown that blood levels of mercury rise several times when people with amalgam fillings chew or drink hot liquids. This is significant. Consider that in 1990, the EPA outlawed the use of mercury-filled interior latex paint because studies found that people living in houses covered in this paint had dangerously high mercury levels in their bodies. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set the safety limit of mercury in the air at 50 ug per cubic meter (50 ug/m3). Measurements of the air in the mouths of people with numerous amalgam fillings have exceeded this level (reaching as high as150 ug/m3). This has particular implications for pregnant and breast feeding women.

Fish and other seafood are contaminated by waste from coal burning furnaces and pesticides and herbicides containing mercury. The sea floor also produces natural sources of mercury. As a result, a large number of previously safe seafood are contaminated with mercury. The mercury enters all sea creatures, but some are more toxic than others. Fish that eat other fish have the highest levels and in general the larger the fish, the higher the concentration. Certain fish should never be eaten, because of their extremely high methylmercury levels. These include:

shark,
swordfish,
king mackerel and
tilefish.
Select fish and other seafood that are low in mercury, such as salmon (from the Pacific) or pollock, or shrimp. However, Gulf shrimp is contaminated with a number of industrial chemicals as well as mercury, especially since Hurricane Katrina. Although most vaccines had their mercury removed as of 2001, the flu vaccines and the Rho immune globulin vaccine still contain mercury. Vaccines contain a special form of mercury called ethylmercury, which is found within the preservative and antiseptic thimerosal. Recent studies have examined ethylmercury and found that in fact it is much more toxic than methylmercury (the form found in fish). In the brain it is readily converted to the more toxic mercury ion. Vaccines containing mercury are strongly link to autism.

Toxic Effects of Mercury

Mercury is fat soluble and it accumulates in fat containing tissues such as the brain, heart, kidneys and liver. It reacts with a number of important structures and chemicals in the organs. Mercury concentrates in cell nucleus, and in even low doses it can cause damage to DNA. Damaged DNA can lead to cancer and degenerative brain disease. Changes, or damage, to DNA can be passed on to subsequent generations, so any children you have after the damage can inherit the problem or risk it produces.

The heart is especially sensitive to mercury toxicity. One study of people with an often fatal disorder called idiopathic cardiomyopathy found that their heart muscle contained a level of mercury that was 22,000 times higher than that seen in hearts of other people the same age. This disorder causes heart failure and people with the problem can require a heart transplant. The elderly with pre-existing heart disease, who receive yearly flu vaccines, are particularly at risk as the flu vaccines still contain mercury.

The brain is another organ that is particularly sensitive to the accumulation of mercury. Most of us have heard the old saying mad as a hatter. This saying originated from the felt hat industry during the 17th through the 19th centuries. It was commonly observed that people who worked in the industry walked as if they were drunk. They were also quite irritable and exhibited bizarre behavior. It was discovered that a form of mercury used in the manufacture of felt hats was to blame.

Mercury can alter how the brain functions, particularly the memory, concentration, motor control and behavior. Depression, memory loss, moodiness, irritability, a lack of interest in events, a desire to be alone, shyness and outbursts of anger are all signs of mercury poisoning. Low doses of mercury, even for short periods, can cause changes to brainwaves observed on an electrocortigram.

High mercury levels in the brain, blood or spinal fluid has been found in people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease and Lou Gehrig s disease. Studies have found that people with Alzheimer s disease have blood mercury levels twice as high as those who were free of the disease. This would also explain the 10-times increase in Alzheimer s disease observed in elderly people who get annual flu vaccines for five years. Several studies have shown improvement in MS patients who had their amalgam fillings removed and subsequently went through chelation to purge them of mercury.

What You Can Do

Try to avoid mercury as much as you are able, including in atmospheric pollution, dental fillings, contaminated seafood and avoid vaccines that contain mercury.
If you have concerns you can have your urine, hair and stool checked for mercury levels. If the levels are high (above 10 ug/g of creatine) you can use a chelation agent to remove the mercury.
Perspiration removes mercury. Exercising will increase the perspiration, but a new study found that exercise redistributes the mercury and this concentrates the mercury in the brain and heart muscle.
Garlic extract neutralizes much of the toxicity and removes a great deal of the mercury from the brain over time. The advantage of this natural substance over drugs is that it can be taken all the time.
A purified extract of the Chlorella plant have been shown to chelate mercury, and they can be taken daily.
Vitamin and mineral supplements are useful. In particular, vitamin E protects DNA against mercury damage. Also alpha-lipoic acid, zinc and selenium have proven roles. Zinc and selenium play a major role in protecting the brain against mercury toxicity. It is thought that selenium protects fish from the damage caused by mercury.
You need cleanse your body of toxic material, including mercury, so that everything is able to work effectively.
Conclusion Mercury is a dangerous toxin that should be avoided as much as possible. Avoidance is not impossible but does require attention to the sources of mercury discussed above. If you believe you may be suffering from mercury toxicity, possibly because you realize that you have had significant exposure and recognize that you have several relevant symptoms, I recommend you consult a naturopathic doctor who will be able to assess your condition and if necessary, order some tests and recommend appropriate treatment.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.
