Tips to activate both sides of the brain

The brain is supposed to have two sides; each side is responsible for specific activities that the human can perform. The right brain is the creative side of the brain, while the left is the logical half of the brain. It is important to be able to activate your right brain to do creative work; here are five ways to activate both halves of the brain.

Meditation

Meditation is a practice that can activate otherwise sleeping talents, it helps develop intuition, keep yourself calm but at the same time develop an ability to be vigilant when danger arrives. There are many guides on the internet as to how to go about meditating. It just requires you to sit quietly without moving and try to keep your head empty of thoughts. Meditation has been practiced for centuries now; time and again people have lauded meditation as one of the most insightful activities to activate your spirituality which is mostly governed by the right brain.

Art activates the right brain

Sign on a piece of paper, the way you would usually, now try to sign by starting in different directions, sign from right to left, top to bottom. Learning to draw and paint is one of the best ways to activate the right side of your brain. Beginners, who have just started to draw, try to copy simple pictures, but keep the picture upside down and draw the picture as you see it. Just doodling also improves your creativity.

To improve your powers of observation, watch a public location for a minute, try to recall and jot down all of the things that you had noticed. This improves your powers of observation; with practice you can develop a photographic memory.

Try to start learning music, learn to play an instrument, and while playing the instrument try to sing. Attempt different forms of art, while humming a tune try to come up with lyrics for the tune. Try writing a poem or play with words that rhyme.

Use your non dominant hand more

While performing different activities try to use your non dominant hand. If you are right handed try to do activities with your left hand, try writing with your left hand, it is one very popular way to activate the right side of your brain. Juggling can help you get coordination between your hands and eyes, try juggling with everyday objects, this helps both sides of the brains to work together better.

Solve puzzles

Solving puzzles regularly can activate the left side of your brain; repeatedly practicing to solve puzzles like Sudoku, crosswords or even playing a game of chess sharpens the left brain, hence can help you be more focused while working.

Left brain can help people become systematic about their work, usually those who possess a dominant left brain are organized, they have to-do lists and goals written down. A well-developed left brain can help learn languages easily.

When you think about being alone, do you imagine calm serenity, or the panic of being stranded on a dark and isolated road? If you are trying to beat depression when you are alone, how you experience depression will be different if you believe you can draw strength from solitude, or if you feel fearful, abandoned, and lost.

Solitude vs. loneliness.

Many years ago, Georges Moustaki sang lovely lyrics that translate as “no, I am never alone… with my solitude.” Most introverts know this feeling well. And even gregarious people can long for solitude if they feel overwhelmed by the weight of other people’s demands. When you are on the verge of collapse, even depression can be enticing… like a wonderful escape into nothingness, where the world is forced to leave you alone.

All of us need some quiet time. Time to reflect, meditate, or put green mud on our faces with some privacy. It is not always easy to learn how to ask for solitude, but it is a skill we must develop in order to recharge our inner resources. Building in regular moments of peaceful solitude amidst the stress of life can protect you from an all out dive over the cliff into the depression void.

Unlike solitude, loneliness hurts. The loss of a spouse or parent, or the end of any significant relationship where we felt part of a team, can hit us as a sudden shock, or grow from a long goodbye. Even a job move to another part of the country can leave us cut off from our support network and emotional resources, leaving us feeling adrift, scared, and even unloved. Depression attaches itself to grief and loneliness like a magnet. We feel that nothing matters because we no longer seem to matter to anyone else.

Learn the joy of solitude to ease the anxiety of loneliness.

Even in the midst of depression, solitude can bring us comfort if we let it. Being alone gives us full license to be good to ourselves, without others we have to please. If our psyches need a few days in bed, then it may be exactly the reprieve we need to get back on our feet.

Meditation, music, laughter, exercise, and good food are all things we can do alone, just for ourselves. We can watch zany movies or lose ourselves in a monster sized novel, and sniffle and sob to our heart’s content. To paraphrase author Chris Cade, one good book is worth more than a host of bad companions.

Give thanks for real friends and family who have blessed your life in the past. Even if they are no longer with you, the time you spent together was a gift you can still cherish. And if you had wonderful people who cared for you before, know that other people will enter your life again.

Group support or therapy can also do a lot if you need to talk out the loss of a loved one, or feelings of abandonment. Check your local paper for meeting times in your area.

Avoid isolation by giving of yourself.

While a little solitude is good for you, the time comes to go back into the world. If we fight depression alone for too long, we may isolate ourselves from the very people that could help us back up. We may tell ourselves we have nothing to contribute, or that we won’t be missed.

Don’t believe what your depression is telling you. There are plenty of people who could use your help, and helping others is a very effective therapy for helping yourself. Volunteer organizations always need extra hands, whether to serve meals, build houses, care for abandoned animals, or a myriad of other causes. You can feel refreshed by doing good, and the people you volunteer with may become a new source of friendship and care.

If you cherish yourself when you are alone, you will have more courage to step out and interact with others. Before long more people will share your life, your sense of purpose will be renewed, and you can beat depression whether you are alone or not.

There are a number of classical texts that Yoga teachers should become familiar with. Among them are the Gheranda Samhita, Shiva Samhita, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. It is believed that the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, written by Swami Svatmarama, is the oldest of these three texts.

There are a number of techniques that are covered within the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, such as – Asanas, Bandhas, Pranayama, Mudras, Dietary Suggestions, Shatkarmas, and more. What we realize, when reviewing the classical texts, is how much detail is given to the subject of self-care and holistic health.

It is easy to think that all the clever secrets of holistic health have recently been invented. However, many forms of asana, stretching, and exercise were around for thousands of years before the Hatha Yoga Pradipika was written.

If we want to draw any conclusions from the classical texts, in regard to our daily health, we might want to consider the following:

Relaxation and Meditation should become a daily ritual. At the same time, if you are experiencing bouts of insomnia, you may want to consider trying any number of relaxation techniques at bedtime. Personally, I tend to favor the stage-by-stage relaxation method. However, many people have success with body scanning relaxation, listening to relaxing music, and relaxation methods, based upon visualization.

It is extremely important that we keep our body clean. How much time do you see animals spend cleaning themselves? By this, we should at least be as clean as a cat, bird, or monkey. If you have ever had a chance to observe them, they spend a lot of time cleaning themselves.

The body also needs physical activity. No matter who we are – the energy in our body should be expelled in a constructive way. The body is, in fact, an organic machine, which is designed to be in motion. Too much sitting is not good for the hips, the skeleton, or the spine; add to this that sufficient calories are not burned by sitting the entire day.

Therefore, a daily routine of asanas, pranayama, walking, swimming, and other activities that you enjoy, should be performed with regularity. There are too many diseases, which can result from excessive sitting – such as, heart problems, high blood pressure, blood pooling into the lower legs, which results in clots – and many more ailments.

Finally, as mentioned within the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, there are foods which are considered injurious to a Yogi. At the same time, these foods are injurious to anyone. Albeit – diets have changed, and our knowledge of dietary benefits has improved immensely, over the past couple of centuries. Needless to say, eating wisely improves your chances of a better quality life.

Insomnia is one problem that has lasted for as long as its victims have existed. Different definitions have come up to explain what this villain really means but a good one will be that “it is an inability to fall asleep, stay asleep, or put the mind to rest even in the midst of opportunity”. Have you ever returned from work or a meeting, took supper, then went to bed to catch some sleep before your 6a.m appointment the next day only for you to keep turning on your bed wandering if sleep went on a sabbatical leave? You wake up, or rather get up the next morning and are not able to perform efficiently at work because of course you did not get a good night rest.

Types of Insomnia

Though there are several degrees of insomnia have been described, Transient insomnia lasts from days to weeks. It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression, or by stress. Its consequences – sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance – are similar to those of sleep deprivation.

Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of between three weeks to six months. Chronic insomnia lasts for years at a time. It can be caused by another disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. Its effects can vary according to its causes. They might include sleepiness, muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue; but people with chronic insomnia often show increased alertness. Some people that live with this disorder see things as though they were happening in slow motion, whereas moving objects seem to blend together. Can cause double vision.

Insomnia may occur in different patterns. One may find it difficult to fall asleep at the beginning of the night (Onset Insomnia), or one may find it difficult to return to bed after waking up in the middle if the night or very early in the morning (Middle-of-the-night Insomnia). One may also find it difficult to maintain sleep at the early hours of the morning or in the middle of the night, sometimes this is associated with pain disorders or medical illness.

Causes of insomnia

Insomnia has a considerable number of causes. The very important ones are listed below.

The use of psychoactive drugs or stimulants e.g. cocaine, caffeine, ephedrine, amphetamines etc can give rise to insomnia.

Hormone shifts such as those that precede menstruation and those during menopause.

Issues of life such as fear, stress, anxiety, job problems, unsatisfactory sex life, financial stress, and emotional tension among others.

Mental disorders such as clinical depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia, etc.

Shift work and jet lag, can cause an inability to sleep at some times of the day and excessive sleepiness at other times of the day. Jet lag is seen in people who travel through multiple time zones, as the time relative to the rising and setting of the sun no longer coincides with the body’s internal concept of it.

Certain neurological disorders, brain lesions, or a history of traumatic brain injury can also cause insomnia.

Abuse of over-the counter or prescription sleep aids can produce rebound insomnia.

Do I need to mention that noise and some other poor sleep hygiene can cause insomnia? Some people are gifted though to be able to sleep on a stake under water.

It is not uncommon to have middle of the night awakenings due to alcohol consumption.

Nightmares also are convicted, as well as those parasites hold WrestleMania matches in your intestine.

Treatment of insomnia

So much for the causes, now let’s talk about treatment.

In many cases, insomnia is caused by another disease, side effects from medications or a psychological problem. It is important to identify or rule out medical and psychological before deciding on the treatment for the insomnia.

Attention to sleep hygiene is an important first line treatment strategy and should be tried before any pharmacological approach is considered.

Non-drug methods are usually superior to the drug treatments because with time you begin to depend on the drugs to go to bed, hence, no drug, no sleep. Sounds familiar? Now I’m sure you don’t want to be a sedative drug addict. I am not ruling out the importance of using drugs but when drugs should be administered even on prescription, they should be used on a short term basis.

When you have insomnia; before you rush to the mercy of sedative drugs that bore your system to a false sleep, use the non-dug mechanism as your first line of action. These methods include: sleep hygiene, behavioural interventions, stimulus control, relaxation therapy etc.

A recent study found that cognitive behavior therapy is more effective than hypnotic medications in controlling insomnia. In this therapy, patients are taught improved sleep habits and relieved of counter-productive assumptions about sleep. The effects of cognitive behavior therapy have sustained and lasting effects on treating insomnia long after therapy has been discontinued; so much unlike the hypnotic medications.

Chronic users of hypnotic medications for insomnia do not have better sleep than chronic insomniacs who do not take medications. In fact, chronic users of hypnotic medications actually have more regular night-time awakenings than insomniacs who do not take hypnotic medications. Thus short term or occasional use of hypnotics can be beneficial but long term use may be detrimental to sleep.

Some insomniacs use herbs such as valerian, chamomile, lavender, hops, and passion-flower. Valerian has undergone multiple studies and appears to be modestly effective.

Some traditional and anecdotal remedies for insomnia include: drinking warm milk before bedtime, taking a warm bath, exercising vigorously for half an hour in the afternoon, eating a large lunch and then having only a light evening meal at least three hours before bed, avoiding mentally stimulating activities in the evening hours, going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting up early, and avoiding exposing the eyes to too much light, especially blue light, a few hours before bedtime. Some people believe that meditation, or listening to slow paced music can help send the sleep coming. Some people also believe that saying a word of prayer about sleep. The mindset and your ability to manipulate it may also contribute immensely to the treatment or management of insomnia.

The largest city in the Lone Star State, Houston, TX is the fourth largest city in the entire US-right after New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. But while those cities have a distinct impression in the minds of people from around the world, Houston is still being discovered by people every day. Located just upstream from the Gulf of Mexico it is a major port to markets across the globe. Situated in the oil rich state of Texas, it is world headquarters to many of the most important energy multinationals. Unique, vibrant, diverse and prosperous, Houston, TX is emerging as America’s next great world-class city.

One interesting Houston distinction is that unlike most cities in the US there are no zoning ordinances. The result is that every neighborhood is a patchwork of businesses, homes, churches and other places of worship, schools, parks and manufacturing. Some areas have managed to keep a more traditional layout, but across the city you won’t find anywhere else with the kind of ordered chaos offered in Houston. Part of this organic chaos is some pretty nasty traffic and like Los Angeles (and unlike the older, Eastern metropolises of New York and Chicago) a car is more or less a must have here. As you cruise across town you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled; great treasures are often mixed in with rather prosaic surroundings.

Houston, TX-like many big cities-has a well-developed fine arts community. Its downtown district actually boasts the largest concentration of playhouses and dramatic performance spaces anywhere in the United States outside of Broadway. Touring companies of all the big musicals come through town-often on the first runs with the original casts-and there are a number of world premieres right here in Space City. Also of interest is the Rothko Chapel. Mark Rothko was one of the most notable and influential artists of the 20th century. His experiments with color and composition have been celebrated by critics and art historians since even before his 1970 suicide. Right before he took his life in the midst of a terrible depression Rothko finished a project wherein he designed a non-denominational space for meditation in Houston and decorated it with original paintings. The space is now considered a major work of art in itself and is open to the public where they can see the dark works created by this deeply significant artist. The city also hosts a terrific opera and world-renowned ballet among a number of other galleries and museums.

As for more popular art forms, Houston has emerged as one of the central scenes in the global hip-hop movement. The city’s rap artists have created a unique sound now emulated by rappers and DJs everywhere. No musical innovation is more characteristic of the H-Town sound than “chopped and screwed” tracks-slowed down and echoing, the sound was developed by the legendary DJ Screw to emulate the effects of the prescription cough syrup popularly abused among the set (and responsible for the deaths of several-not the least of which was Screw himself).

Houston, TX is a place where art, music, architecture and commerce come together from every corner of the planet to create an intricate human quilt like nowhere else. Whether traveling or looking to move, Houston has a place where you will fit.

Most of us have direct experience of how chronic, or intense psychological stress can affect the digestive system. Ancient practitioners of Chinese Medicine also theorized that the gut (particularly the Liver) was the seat of emotions. Modern science explains this phenomena, discovering that up to 90% of our neurotransmitters and hormone are actually produced in the gut.

What Happens to Digestion When We’re Stressed

Something not many of us know, at least logically, is that the digestive system is in fact governed by the Central Nervous System, namely a sub-branch of the nervous system referred to as the “parasympathetic nervous system”. In essence, the parasympathetic system is our “rest and digest” state. Only when we are relaxed and free of stress does the parasympathetic system and therefore digestion, activate.

When we enter a state of stress, the counterpart to the parasympathetic system; the sympathetic system, activates. This stress state or the “flight or fight” response shuts down digestion by reducing blood flow to the digestive organs, inhibits digestive fluid secretion, and instead sends the blood and biological energy to muscular-skeletal system to prepare for battle.

When the sympathetic system is chronically stimulated by prolonged stress, it can lead to gastrointestinal disorders, inflammation and weaken the immune system.

One example of how stress can cause common digestive issues is by causing the esophagus to spasm and altering stomach acid secretion. This leads to heartburn, acid reflux and can make you feel nauseous. Another example is the effects stress has on the colon. Intense stress increases the secretion of stress hormones cortisol, prolactin and serotonin, which can cause the colon to become hyperactive or tense, which leads diarrhea or constipation.

When any of these conditions become persistent, the inflammation and overall poor functioning of the digestive system can eventually lead to stomach ulcers, IBS, and inflammatory bowel disease.

How to Manage Stress for Better Digestion

Reducing total stress is not a quick-fix job, it requires a holistic, multi-factorial approach. However, psychological stress is one of the primary, dominant stressors that negatively affect the digestive system. While getting a handle on the causes of psychological stress can take time, there are some simple things you can do to mitigate their effects.

One simple way to de-stress is to engage in fun, moderate exercise. Physical exercise relieves tension, gets us out of our heads, improves our mood by releasing endorphins but also helps with the elimination of stress hormones. Some of the healthiest forms of exercise include walking, hiking, biking, swimming, dancing, yoga, thai qi, and weight lifting.

Other great ways to reduce stress include:

Relaxation – People with digestive issues are often overly stressed and do not relax enough. Getting authentic, deep relaxation is more challenging in today’s world, but can be achieved through yoga, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, cognitive therapy, biofeedback, good music, spending time in nature, camping, love-making, and working on an enjoyable project or hobby.

Communication therapy – A major source of psychological stress dwells in the world of communication. In fact, most stress and problems in life have their roots in communication trouble. If you’ve ever been in a situation where you didn’t know what to say, or someone wasn’t talking to you, you know the stress associated with poor communication. Taking courses or reading books communications can be helpful for improving our quality of life, relationships and reducing a great source of stress. However, simply having a good friend or loved one you can talk to freely about your stress can be a major stress reliever. Personally, I have found cognitive therapy to be a major help in relieving chronic stress in my life. There are even studies that have demos rated a 70 percent improvement in stress symptoms after 12 weeks of cognitive therapy.

Nutrition – A bad diet can ruin a good digestive system. Poor nutrition can be a source of biological stress, but also, eating the right foods can help curb the effects of stress. In general, it is helpful to eat more protein and salt when stressed. In fact, soldiers in the army are required to eat a higher protein diet to mitigate the catabolic effects of combat. So, it is best to take a two-sided approached nutritionally, where you avoid junk foods that add to your stress, and eat nutrient-dense, wholesome foods that help replenish a stressed body.

Choose your battles – An interesting thing about life is that problems seem to be valuable. If we had no problems at all, we’d be existentially bored. So, the goal is not to eliminate all problems and stress form our lives. Instead, we need to pick our problems wisely. For example, starting a new fulfilling relationship will have its challenges, but in the end, the problems are usually worth it. Same goes for starting a new project or goal. A good rule of thumb is that any given condition in life would ideally be 80% pleasure with 20% pain, the pain being the optimal amount of stress that just makes like interesting and helps us grow.

In Conclusion

Mental and emotional stress can cause a lot of problems for an otherwise healthy digestive system. Stress all together is unavoidable, it seems to be a natural part of the game of life. What’s important is how we react to our stress and problems, and that we ultimately avoid it from becoming chronic. If you know you are under too much stress and/or having symptoms of digestive stress, then these tips will help. If stress management is the problem, there are cognitive therapists, yoga and medication instructors who can provide verified help.

Many believe that the mind is divided into three parts: the conscious, the sub-conscious, and the super conscious. Our conscious mind is usually cluttered with distractions and noise, our sub-conscious holds suppressed past experiences, fears, and (imagined) limitations, but the super conscious is where our perfection and mastery reside.

Think back to a time in your life where everything “clicked”, and you could do no wrong. It may have been for only a few minutes, but for that brief time you were invincible. Maybe you were shooting hoops, and you just couldn’t miss. You felt so “on”, you knew that every shot would be a “swish”… and it was. Possibly you were playing tennis, and you felt as though you could return every shot… and you did. Perhaps you were painting, and you felt like no stroke from your brush could be wrong… and the canvas turned out to be beautiful. Whether you were dancing, playing a musical instrument, programming a computer, or public speaking, I imagine that at some time in your life, you have experienced such a transcendence of your regular limitations. This state is known as “superconsciousness”. If you have been to this space before, you would do anything to get there again. Unfortunately, therein lays the problem. When we try to analyze and pressure ourselves to reclaim “superconsciousness”, we almost certainly fail.

One way of attaining super consciousness is through meditation. Meditation is the path to true self-awareness. Through meditation we can escape from the limitations that our conscious and sub-conscious mind subject us to.

Susan D’angelo is a typical mother of two, doing her daily routine. She wakes up, gets her children ready for school, gets herself ready for work, makes a light breakfast, and then she’s on her way to drop her kids off at school. However, today is no ordinary day for Susan, because somewhere between dropping her children off at school, and the drive to work that morning, she starts to get that fluttering feeling in the pit of her stomach. Her heart rate starts to increase, and her hands start to sweat. Immediately she’s bombarded by thoughts of: “Did I forget something?” “Are my children going to be OK at school?” “What if I’m late for work?”

None of these events have happened yet, but in Susan’s mind, they are happening right now. The brain starts sending signals to the body to go into “fight or flight” mode, which triggers the release of adrenaline to deal with this stress. All of the sudden, her heart starts racing; her breathing becomes rapid, and she believes that she is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack. This only further intensifies the body’s response to the immediate danger. Before long, Susan is experiencing a full blown panic attack.

Everyone at some point in their lives has experienced panic attacks, but usually the attacks coincide with a particularly stressful event such as: a fire, an emergency, a robbery, etc… In some people though, these events may play out only in their minds, but as that person continues to dwell on those thoughts, the body starts to behave as if there is clear and present danger. Sometimes, the body doesn’t even need a thought to trigger a panic attack. You could be standing in line at the grocery store, driving to your child’s soccer game, or just sitting at home watching television.

This is not a normal problem that anyone should live with! A panic attack is a horrible experience, and people start worrying that they may have another at any time. Of course that means they probably will end up panicking that they will have another panic attack. It’s a vicious cycle, and no one really has one answer to why these attacks occur abnormally. However, there are methods of coping or even eliminating panic attacks.

There are some important things to keep in mind when you are experiencing a panic attack:

o Your heart will not stop beating during an attack. Many people think that their heart will simply “give out” which only worsens the effect of the panic attack. Keep this in mind: your body is behaving the way it is supposed to during a high-stress situation.

o You are not going crazy! It may feel like your thoughts are spiraling out of control, but in reality, millions of people suffer from panic attacks in the United States alone. You are not alone in your plight, and just as quickly as they come on, panic attacks go away.

o You are not going to pass out and stop breathing during a panic attack. If that were the case, you would see fire fighters and police officers passing out while they are responding to an emergency. The body is designed to cope with these temporary bursts of anxiety, and they can cope with them for extended periods of time. It’s part of our body’s ingenious design that gets us out of harm’s way.

When you are experiencing the onset of an attack, try taking your mind off of it. I know this sounds easier said than done, but there are ways you can lessen the effects of a panic attack. Let’s say you are driving, and you see a wall of tail lights up ahead. You have to be at work in 15 minutes, and the traffic jam isn’t going to let up any time soon. There is nothing you can do about it, but you start to get stressed out about it anyways.

o Try calming yourself down by putting in your favorite CD, or listen to a humorous talk radio show.

o Think rationally! Just keep telling yourself “I’ll get there when I get there. There’s nothing more I can do.” I’m guilty of playing and replaying what I think the boss will say by the time I actually get there, only to find out that the situation was much scarier in my mind than in reality! Then I feel silly that I got myself so worked up over nothing.

Sometimes anxiety can crop up in other places, such as getting on a plane, or simply sitting on the couch watching the news.

o If you are on a plane, try talking with someone to take your mind off of flying. I’m so guilty of being so worked up over the what-ifs, that I miss out on a pretty cool experience. Let’s say the man or woman sitting next to you is flying for the first time, try concentrating more on talking with that person. Who knows, you may make a great friend and find yourself forgetting all about being anxious.

o Try working on a hobby if you are at home during an attack. If you enjoy drawing, writing, or playing music, work on something you can immerse yourself in!

o Try moving to a different area, or go for a walk.

o If you are watching something on TV that stresses you out, don’t keep watching it! Change the channel. I’m guilty of this myself!

Sometimes we need a little extra help in reducing stress and anxiety. Sometimes the fear of having panic attacks can inhibit you from doing things you once enjoyed. In extreme cases, the fear of having panic attacks can keep you from doing even routine activities. This can lead to severe problems like depression. In these cases, simply telling ourselves to snap out of it isn’t going to work.

If you are looking for self-help programs, the Internet has a host of different programs ranging from e-books on how to identify and deal with attacks, to meditation mp3’s and videos to help you. If you are suffering from depression caused by anxiety, it may be time to talk to your doctor about treatment options available to you. Never trick yourself into thinking “well this is just the way I am.” Panic attacks are treatable, and no one has to go through life constantly afraid of having another one.

Brainwave Entrainment Mind Power Techniques – Discover Why It’s Real Science and Not Mumbo Jumbo!

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Mind power techniques – what exactly are they? Is the question to unlock your mind power a bunch of hocus pocus or is there solid proof for it? In this article, I want to dispel the myths and prove to you once and for all that there is something worth pursuing that can improve your life. Read on to find out more.

What Is Mind Power?

Let me first tell you that I am the biggest skeptic when it comes to a lot of this stuff. For example, there is something called the “Law Of Attraction” that seems to be flavour of the month will people like Oprah always talking about it.

That is all about having a desire for something and then somehow the universe will detect your positive energy to change itself to make your dreams come true. Frankly, as an engineering graduate, I find this very difficult to believe that the universe can change in this way.

However, mind power does not require you to make any such “leaps of faith”. Mind power is about harnessing your conscious and sub-conscious mind to operate as efficiently as possible and allow you to reach your full potential. Stay with me because there is a scientific basis for this:

The Science Behind Mind Power

Neurologists and sleep scientists know well that the brain produces waves of various frequencies e.g. alpha, beta, theta waves. These are real and can be measured using an EEG device or a PET scan.

The reason that most people never fulfill their full potential in terms of learning, alertness, happiness, creativity, concentration and more is because their brain simply falls into various states in a most inefficient way – influenced heavily by our poor diets and hectic modern lifestyle.

If there were some way to redress the imbalance then we might be able to achieve our full potential.

Mind Power Techniques

So now that we know that there is the possibility of achieving our full potential, how do we go about achieving it?

One way is to learn meditation. This demands a great deal of dedication and a steep learning curve if you want to achieve your absolute potential – think of Buddhist monks and their ability to drown out everything external.

A better way is to use brainwave entrainment technology. This is an audio technology that involves listening to a high quality stereo sound (CD or mp3 recording) that sounds like a few simple sounds such as bells, fans or waterfalls.

However, under the surface of what you can hear are actually a variety of high frequency harmonics which are encouraging the brain to enter a different state. The advantage of this technique is that it is as easy as picking up your headphones and sitting back – there is no learning curve whatsoever.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.
