brain waves What Is Karma?

Meditation music is music performed to aid in the practice of meditation. It can have a specific religious content, but also more recently has been associated with modern composers who use meditation techniques in their process of composition, or who compose such music with no particular religious group as a focus.

The principle of Karma is a central part of spiritual philosophies. Karma is a Sanskrit word used in eastern philosophies of Hinduism and Buddhism. In Islam and Christianity different words are used to describe the same principle.

Basically the principle of Karma implies that everything we do, good or bad is recorded by the Universal Intelligence and causes a reaction similar to our deed. It is the principle of retribution. As you sow so shall you reap! The main difference between Christianity and Eastern religion as regards this principle is that in prevalent mainstream Christianity the actions and reactions take place over two lives (this one and the next) whereas in eastern philosophy it is something that can be executed over several life times with a soul taking birth repeatedly.

The principle of Karma is applicable even if one does not believe in more than just one life i.e. this one. All it means then is that it would be executed within this life because as such the principle of Karma has nothing to do with the number of lives a person believes in.

The principle of Karma extends not only to our actions but also our thoughts. According to this principle nothing escapes the attention of the Universal Eye. Everything is recorded and taken into account. Any person who believes in doing good should have no difficulty in accepting this principle. All it means is that his or her good deeds will be rewarded. The evildoer who is afraid of the result of his evil would like to deny it vehemently. However he too need not be afraid of this principle because within the principle of Karma are means to wash of that evil.

For those who believe in this principle, its proper understanding can lead to minimizing effort in whatever it is that we have to do with excellent time management. Often we suffer from a sense of futility in not being able to achieve all that we wish to do and not being able to manage our time properly. An understanding of this principle will lead to minimizing that sense of futility. An understanding of this principle also leads to great contentment with the ensuing happiness.

We are born from a portion of this Universe and are therefore the children of the Universe. A loving parent punishes or rewards a child from time to time in order that the child will develop into a better individual and punishment is never so damaging that it causes permanent scars. The goal is progress. The role of the karmic principle is precisely that – To nudge us towards progress into compassion and love.

A way to teach a person a lesson in compassion is to make the person see the other side. Thus a child who hurts others by throwing things may be taught not to do that through explanation. If an explanation does not suffice, he may have to be hurt in a similar way. The principle of Karma works something like that. If we can learn our lessons into compassion in a gentle manner then Nature will teach us that way, but if a harder way of inculcating that learning is required then Nature will do that too. What better way to feel the pain of a poor person, by suffering through an episode of poverty and what better way to feel the headache of another than by suffering a headache oneself. Yet if one is compassionate enough to feel the pain of another without personally undergoing a similar pain then it is not quite necessary to undergo a similar pain. One may like to argue that we are not children any more, but that argument is meaningless when we stand in front of the vast Infinite Intelligence of the universe.

If we have hurt someone and we repent, then it means that it may not be necessary for us to undergo a similar suffering in order not to cause a similar intentional suffering again and we may then be excused a similar reaction. This and other ways that undesirable Karma can be dissolved shall be discussed again in a later post on Karma.

Karma arises from an exercise of our free wills but let us leave that aspect for the third post on Karma. At this stage it is essential to emphasize that the essence of the Karmic principle is love in a Universe where life thrives on the principle of love.

The source of our Karma is Free Will. All life forms possess it. It is the distinguishing feature of life much more so than ability to reproduce etc. as defined by scientists because after all a sterile person is a life form too. Whenever we exercise our free wills and make a choice or carry out an action based on that choice, it will influence some other life form or some other part of the Universe and most importantly our own soul and it may therefore generate Karma.

I used the word “may” in the last paragraph because karma may not be generated at all. The Universe as a whole has a Will also, but the Universe does not accumulate karma in the exercise of that free will, because it does not influence anyone but itself. We are all parts of the Universe. We may not realize that fully but the universe is never in doubt of that.

It is possible to align one’s free will with that of the Universe in a spirit of service and when we carry out actions based on that we may not accumulate any Karma. The mighty angelic spirits of the Universe do that most times. Therefore, they do not accumulate Karma most times -either good or bad. Good Karma is a reward but it has its limitations. It lasts for a limited duration. When that good karma is exhausted one is at a loss and back to square one. The angels don’t need that. Their needs are met directly by the Universe since they spend their time in sharing the work of the Universal Consciousness. Different Humans do that to different degrees and to that extent do the work of the angels, (gods, devas and the evolved compassionate spirits included) and to that extent the Universe meets their needs directly.

This work of the Universe is different from service for nature and humanity merely in order to be good and not out of compassion, because service is a good deed and generates good karma. The universe does all kinds of things, some that are regarded as bad by beings affected adversely by it such as earthquakes and hurricanes besides sunshine and the music of the birds. How are we to know what the will of the Universe is? That is an altogether different matter and needs a separate discussion some other time.

There are other ways in which significant Karma may not be generated, because the accumulation of Karma depends on the associated intentions, motivations and emotions rather than the action itself. Thus, if you stepped over an insect and killed it unknowingly yesterday while out on a walk, no bad karma is generated for you personally. However if you killed one slowly and derived gleeful pleasure as you watched it writhe in pain, then a similar karma may await you some day. A military man who kills hundreds of enemies in a war on instructions from his superiors for the protection of his country generates no significant bad Karma whereas another who kills a single person out of anger or for gain accumulates bad karma that invites a similar fate for him sometime in the future. It appears that it is not just the action but its impact on our inner self or souls that decides karma. Thus an action committed at the level of thought that impacts deeply on our soul will generate karma whereas another action actually committed unknowingly will produce none.

The universal eye however misses nothing and our record of deeds is written on our souls and the firmament of the Universe. Based on that the Universe will draw out an individual lesson plan for our education, that education is the unfolding of our individual Karma. We could by pass some of that unfolding through self-study such as (meditation, reflection, prayer or service) or by earning extra credits by doing things like forgiving others who have wronged us. Then as a result some of our similar Karma would be forgiven too. However all such karma that needs action by Nature for the evolution of our soul towards knowledge and compassion will be dealt with by nature. In this karmic education there is no canceling of good and bad karma. The results of both have to be experienced separately. One cannot pass the Language exam by getting extra points in Mathematics.

As we go about conducting the business of living, we often make plans and put in the required effort to execute those plans. Simultaneously something else happens around us – Nature goes about unfolding events throughout our lives – a timing known to Nature alone. We thus face the results of two types of actions, first our own and secondly those of others and the world around i.e. Nature. This second set of actions may be regarded as our karma executed for us by Nature through various means including the people we interact with and occurrences around us.

Karmic results require no special effort on our part in order to unfold. Thus, whereas it usually takes a lot of effort to get a home built and many make that effort, it takes little effort to accept another as a part of an inheritance. The first home comes primarily as a result of our efforts whereas the second comes mostly from our karma – which too is a result of our own deeds, an indirect one though, that was noted by nature on some past occasion and the resulting karma then allocated, if one subscribes to the karma theory.

Most simply viewed unfolding karma is the influence on us of the efforts and actions of others and the world around us as distinct from our own personal efforts and actions. The net result is due the combined affect of these two types of actions. The outside influences are not from random causes in an intelligent Universe but rather by design for those who believe in an intelligent and interacting Universe.

We can move with the flow, making little effort, and watch our karma as it unfolds. However that might include unfortunate encounters. With a little effort to resist we could avert the harm in some cases. Of the innumerable sorts of karma that lie in store for us, each has a certain weight or significance. Those that affect others and us only slightly for brief periods of time are the less significant and lighter ones. Others that affect a large number of persons or affect us for long periods of our life are heavier ones. It takes little effort on our part to change the results of the lighter karma but the heavier karma requires an immense effort to change. It may be beyond our capacity to change and one may wish to decide in each situation if the effort is worth it. A belief in the principles of Karma may make us accept with greater fortitude unfortunate events of our life over which we had no power of change.

If it is Karmically destined that we should have a meal of rice for dinner today, then that is a light karma that can be changed with little effort. One may have noodles instead. The day we decide to go to the ocean for a holiday is not an extremely heavy karma. With little effort we can choose the date. The day Tony Blair becomes the Prime Minister of UK is a heavier one because that choice affects the lives of millions. It may be beyond Tony’s efforts to change that Karma. It is perhaps for this reason that Political leaders and kings of lore had great faith in oracles and astrologers- persons who could divine the future. The fate of kings was so beset and controlled by heavy karma that it could not be changed easily and was therefore a fit subject for prediction. A gypsy woman predicted the fate of Queen Victoria while she was still in the womb, prompting her father to rush to England with the unborn child even though he did not have the money for the trip nor a room to live in England. The day I visit the beach, on the other hand requires so little effort to change that it is beyond the effort of the best clairvoyant in the world to predict. I will just go on another day.

As we go about conducting the business of living, it may require tremendous effort to achieve our goals. There are millions who struggle from morning to night, some like the ants on our planet, achieve no more than decent survival. There might be another easier way to meet these goals and it could be the Karmic route.

Many rich persons make large donations to churches, school and temples. Religious organizations appear to thrive on it. It is not because these human organizations are fully sound. Some of the donation could be misused. The donor may know that. But the donor also knows that these organizations bring solace and a place of prayer for the innocent and simple. Thus they probably help to bring about a positive change in the lives of many. Nature could then record it as positive karma and give back greater riches until one perhaps becomes as rich as a King. In the meantime, those of us who may be wiser and suspect the validity of such organizations may suffer because of such wisdom. Some, who are not so rich spend a portion of their incomes or efforts to aid the poor and helpless, producing results in the same direction. The rewards of good karma cannot be escaped just as the results of bad karma cannot be avoided as per the theory of karmic results. Bad karma may however be averted through genuine repentance, through sincere forgiveness and meditative resolution. Nevertheless, the rich man who has made a donation to a temple as a trick rather than compassion or conviction just to produce good karma generates the karma of getting tricked back. Some day when the good karma is exhausted and his name has faded from the announcement plate, Nature tricks him by leaving him high and dry. A politician who earns his bread and butter by making false promises to the electorate, may find one day that his bread has been snatched away through false promises by the very same electorate. The thief who becomes rich may find that he loses his riches through theft. Some of the Karma unfolds in the human courts of law that too are a part of Nature. One may however escape the eyes of the law. Human systems are rarely perfect. One cannot escape the Universal Eye.

A good deed will produce a reward but a good deed resulting from compassion will produce besides, an evolution of the soul to better and more knowledgeable circumstances.

Trying to design one’s actions based on karma theory is complicated and does not produce durable results since karma exhaust after a limited duration. In their main the value is in the education of the soul. There seems to be another simpler method that can contribute to durable progress. Deep within us lies an unaffected and pure part of the Universal Consciousness that knows the truth of matters. if we do whatever we do out of a sense of duty and because it is the right thing to do, leaving the results and outcomes in the hands of the Universe, then the very same act may become a co-operation with Nature. It may generate no karma and the Universe may then co-operate with us in meeting our genuine needs. Getting more in touch with our inner self brings us closer to compassion and the Universe, and the actions of a compassionate soul automatically tend to good.

According to mythological accounts the angels of this universe do not work a moment for their living, yet the powers of the Universe appear to be at their command. Instead the angels, as per stated accounts, spend their time in doing the bidding of the Universe or God. Karmic actions are judged not merely by the result of the action but also by the intention and motivation behind the actions. Thus actions that are done in accordance with the Will of the universe as a sacrifice or out of a sense of duty, and not out of personal motivation are a service to the Universe. The word Universe has been chosen here instead of the simpler word God, because in the minds of many, God has become associated with a human like form, whereas the reference here is to the formless infinite power and consciousness that pervades the universe.

Karma may be a difficult sounding word. It has been adopted from Sanskrit. However the explanation given here is based on a wider study covering literature from the east, west, science and personal reflection. One need not use that word. A new word such as Consequential Action may be invented for what we are speaking of here. In the main it implies in its simplest form that the Universe is Infinitely aware, conscious and intelligent. It never loses sight of the infinite number of its offspring but rather observes them on a continuous basis through a portion of Itself, the very consciousness seated within. It remembers all it sees and bases its interaction with us on what it has observed and recorded. The Universe is not a passive lover or observer. It does not rest for a moment. It interacts with us every moment of our existence in very real terms. It is an expression of Its infinite love for us.

Meditation for Beginners

If you are a beginner and have never meditated before or only a couple of times, you may not know where to start or if you are doing it right. There are so many different types of meditation and it can be difficult to know which one would be great for you.

What is Your Goal with Meditation?

Think about what you want to achieve from your meditation practice. Do your want to improve your health, or do you want to connect with your spirituality. Maybe you want to learn to focus or maybe you want to become more positive. No matter what your goal is, there are different meditations that can help you achieve it. But the first type of meditation you should learn is the basic breathing exercise. This is an easy but important type of meditation that you will use in any type of meditation but can also be practiced alone.

In breathing meditation you will have to focus on your breath and only on your breath and in that way still your mind. But in the beginning it may be difficult not to get distracted by your own thoughts trying to steal your attention. But as anything else, it takes practice. But luckily the progress is quite fast and you will be able to see your own development after only a couple of day’s meditation. Of course when you make it a habit and practice daily, you will really be able to feel the benefits of meditation and hopefully reach your goal.

When you start to meditate, it is important to remember to stay relaxed through the whole meditation. You also have to meditate on a regular basis to really be able to feel the many benefits there is with meditation. So try to make it a habit and part of your daily routine. A good way to do that is to practice your meditation the same time ever day such as in the morning before you start your day or evening before going to sleep. So choose a time for your meditation where you are able to get 15 minutes undisturbed practice.

For beginners, and trained as well, it can be very helpful to listen to meditation audio recordings that can guide you through the practice. Listening to music and nature sounds can also help you relax and find peace.

So start your meditation practice and see how your life and health improves.

Sound healing is rapidly gaining recognition internationally as an integral part of the healing process for cancer patients. It has also been effective in relieving pain and in the treatment of stress related afflictions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, insomnia, pain and depression. Mainstream medical teaching facilities like Duke University and the University of North Carolina have added programs that link body/mind and spirit to the treatment of cancer. Cancer Prevention centers are utilizing sound as a vital part of the healing process for patients with astounding results.

I, like many healers believe that illness is a manifestation of dis-harmony within the body; an imbalance in the cells or a given organ and that healing can be achieved by restoring the normal vibratory frequencies of the diseased, out-of-harmony parts of the body. Vibrational healing, especially with sound is a potent way of restoring the body to its’ normal vibratory frequency.

All matter is energy vibrating at different rates and by altering the rate of vibration we can change the structure of matter. In this case the healing process is initiated by entraining our brainwaves and creating sympathetic resonance with the perfect vibrations of the bowls. When we add intention to the frequency, the healing potential is increased even more. That intention can be through prayer, chanting, and even silent focused attention, but declaring it in an audible manner is best.

Another way of saying that is the fundamental state of the universe is a state of absolute harmony. Our core state, because we are part of the natural universe is also one of harmony and great ease. When we disconnect from our core state through stress, distraction, illness and the challenges of daily life, it creates dis-ease: spiritual, physical and mental. Sound from the Tibetan bowls gently nudges us back to our natural state of blissful tranquility and alignment.

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at the Cornell Cancer Prevention Center in NY has been using sound, including Tibetan Bowls, Crystal bowls and Chanting in work with cancer patients for many years. “If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals o n a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.”

According to an article in Spirituality and Health magazine Dr. Gaynors’ research shows that the sound vibration of the bowls affects the disrhythmic motion found in cancer cells and cause a harmonious transformation. In a blind study he found that there was a 50% shorter recovery time from chemo patients for those who used the bowls regularly and that when bowls were used in the early stages of cancer, during consultations with patients, their level of anxiety and stress was greatly reduced.

Imagine how making a solid, well thought out decision about ones future would be improved in a context void of stress and anxiety. Imagine also how the ability to repeatedly connect with that sense of tranquility during the discomfort of chemotherapy increases the quality of life for cancer patients.

Research by Dr. David Simon, medical director of neurological services at Sharp Cabrillo Hospital in San Diego and medical director at the Chopra Center found that chants are chemically metabolized into ‘endogenous opiates’, that act on the body as internal painkillers and healing agents.

In my own research with sound using biofeedback equipment I found that the harmonics produced by the Himalayan (Tibetan) Singing Bowls have transformative abilities (brain activity, heart rate and body temperature have diminished during sessions) creating a deeply peaceful state of being while energizing the brain.

Biofeedback is a scientifically valid measurement devise used to help individuals gain voluntary control over several different Autonomic Nervous System functions. Research has shown that when breathing and heart rate are in synch this produces a resonant frequency in the body (similar to the resonance being produced by the Tibetan bowls). This is extremely beneficial for the heart and the entire body. Stress related disorders, pain, and many other disorders are predicted by whether or not a person is achieving cardio-respiratory synchrony. During sessions of Tibetan bowl sound therapy, cardio-respiratory synchrony increased dramatically as measured by J&J Engineered Biofeedback equipment. Data showed that during the sound therapy sessions there was an increase in Parasympathetic Nervous System activity and decrease in Sympathetic Nervous System drive. The relaxation response was initiated and the stress response was inhibited. This means the Autonomic Nervous System was balanced for the majority of the session. The resonance of the bowls produced slow breathing of approximately six breaths per minute which produced beneficial effects on the heart and whole body.

These results are promising in that Tibetan bowl sound therapy increases cardio-respiratory synchrony and resonance within the body. Therefore, there are many disorders that can greatly benefits from the use of Tibetan bowl sound therapy.

My clients have supported the scientific findings with reports of everything from relief from pain and discomfort, clearing of sinuses, shifting out of depression, ability to sleep (for those with insomnia), re-vitalization and clarity, feeling of well being, great connectedness and deep personal transformation. Clients report a fundamental shift in their view of phenomenon space, accentuated clarity of mind and body, enhanced creativity, vigor, joy and sense of peace.”

It is important to look at what healing really is and what the difference is between healing and curing. A cure is the “complete biological resolution of a diseased state”, according to Dr Gaynor in his book “The Healing Power of Sound”. Healing, however has more far reaching implications that occur on emotional, spiritual and physical levels. It is a regenerative process married to a spiritual awakening that can have profound consequences on illness, disease and all aspects of our lives.

Himalayan or Tibetan Singing bowls have been traced to the shamanistic Bon tradition which predates Buddhism by thousands of years. Dr. Gaynor mentions in an article in Shamans Drum magazine that the reason sound (and chanting) are still used in shamanistic cultures is that the sound induces trance states of consciousness conducive to healing. The ancient Himalayan Bowls are made from a consecrated seven metal alloy which, when skillfully stimulated, produce five individual and simultaneous tones, each at its own consistent frequency, which vibrational-ly dance with each other. The raw materials were collected, smelted and purified, cast, reheated and hammered into shape and tone. Mantras or sacred chants were sung and infused intent into the bowls. Their sound synchronizes sentient brain waves and creates a therapeutic effect upon the mind/body realization. .

Singing Bowls, produce the primordial sound of ‘AUM’: The fundamental utterance of energy metamorphosing into matter. They alter space, mind and time; awakening cellular memory and healing the energy body. The act of listening to their captivating overtones effectively stops one’s internal dialog, the ‘Monkey Mind’. The individual is transported into a space of tranquility and balance where the ‘Universal Chord’, found within each self, is touched, joined with and understood. The Universal Chord if you will, that is the primordial substance from which our whole reality is made and from which our Universe originated. Although the vibrational energy of the bowls can be directed to a specific area for healing purposes, they work more on a fundamental level.

These instruments are used within meditations and physical vibrational healing techniques. Their harmonic resonance is used to:

– reduce stress and pain

– balance energy

– create vitality synchronization and spontaneous healing.

– effectively alter consciousness into a peaceful and expansive meditative state. (trance induction)

– meditation

Brainwave Entrainment How To Hypnotise Someone – Learn What It Is Really All About

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

When people think about hypnosis, people will often voice a number of fears. So when learning how to hypnotize someone one needs to be aware of the range of common fears that people might have and be able to address them thoroughly before doing the hypnosis. The vast majority of hypnotists will tell you that they spend a significant amount of time with these people “debunking” the numerous myths that surround the art of hypnosis. The range of “fears” or questions that people will raise with the hypnotist tend to be in relation to “being out of control” or, “being in the control of the hypnotist” and being made to walk like a duck or quack like a chicken, a fear of disclosing very personal details or a fear of being “stuck” in hypnosis for ever. The reality is, that chickens, don’t quack!!!

The question of learning how to hypnotise someone is an elusive one to a lot of people. So many people have a misinformed opinion of hypnosis and it is due largely to the fact that it has been badly portrayed in the media, largely through stage shows and strange scenarios dramatised in television and in movies. As a consequence a lot of people are afraid of it because they have that misconception that the only reason that people are hypnotized is so that they can be told to cluck like a chicken. The reality is that all hypnosis is really self hypnosis. A person cannot be hypnotized against their will and cannot be “made” to do anything that is against their ethical, moral or spiritual value system. Nor will they “reveal” any deep dark secrets that they don’t want anyone else to know about and they will not stay stuck in hypnosis should the hypnotist forget to “emerge” them.

The hypnotic state is essentially a “brain wave” related state. When fully conscious we are producing Beta brain waves. A light “hypnoidal” state is an Alpha brainwave state and it is something we all experience every day, such as when we go into and out of sleep or when we are daydreaming. Have you ever had the experience of becoming so totally absorbed in a book or a movie or a hobby that you enjoy, to the point of not being responsive, even to someone calling your name. That is because you are essentially in hypnosis which can be defined simply, as a state of focused concentration. So the process of learning how to hypnotise someone, is to become skilled at inducing that focused state.

There are a variety of methods of helping a person attain that focused state we call hypnosis. . Hypnotists refer to this process as ” Induction”. So learning how to hypnotize someone means that you will need to learn inductions and preferably a number of them.

There are three main styles or groups of inductions and each of the main groups has several techniques. The main groups are: The Instant induction, the rapid induction and the progressive muscle relaxation induction.

Instant Induction: This method produces a trance state literally in seconds and is favoured by the stage hypnotist. Instant induction techniques are simple to master, with practice and an air of confidence. Acquiring this skill is very useful for any one learning how to hypnotize someone.

Rapid Induction: A rapid induction induces a trance state in about 7- 10 minutes. It is most often in clinical hypnosis, such as in the office of a psychologist. A rapid induction employs a series of short direct commands designed to help a person into that hypnotic state.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation Induction: is an early form of induction. It is sometimes used for those who find it difficult to relax. It takes more time than the other forms of inductions. It is a good induciton to learn for those just starting out in learning how to hypnotise someone.

It is important for someone learning how to hypnotize someone to know as many inductions as possible as it affords the hypnotist a wide range of options as not everyone who is hypntoised responds to the same type of induction.

Deepening

Once someone is in trance, the next stage is to “deepen the trance”. This involves helping the person move into the slower brain wave states (low alpha, theta and high delta) wherein they are more open to the suggestions being offered. There are several techniques involved in this process. A simple example is to have the client imagine that they are at the top of a staircase and as they descend step by step they go “down” into a deeper state (of concentration). A simple counting methodology, 10 down to 1, one step descent per number, will facilitate the deepening process. The range and variety of deepeners is endless.

Use of the hypnotist’s imagination can facilitate any number of such deepeners and the effects will be enhanced by appropriate use of the voice: tone, pace of delivery, choice and use of language and so on. All of this can be further developed by the person learning how to hypnotize someone using the breath as a guide to pace the delivery of the deepener: the hypnotist initially matches the delivery of the deepener to the client’s breathing rate and then begins to slow the pace of delivery and the client subconsciously matches the pace of the hypnotist ‘s delivery, thereby “breathing” their way into the deepening process. This is called pacing and leading.

Other techniques such as “fractionation” (deepening in stages) are also employed to good effect, and this is an easy process to learn for those wanting to learn how to hypnotize someone.

Hypnosis is used therapeutically by psychologists and some medical doctors and is useful in treating such things as Chronic pain, Irritiable bowel syndrome (IBS), Depression, Anxieties and Phobias to mention but a few conditions. It is also used to prepare patients for sugery and some surgery is done under hypnosis with no anaestheisa used at all.

This book is a useful introduction to the world of hypnosis if you want to learn how to hypnotise someone.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

It is quite evident that we are living in one terribly noisy world and it seems to be getting worse every day. Everywhere we go we are accosted by loud, unwanted sound. When we enter elevators, malls and restaurants we are engulfed by musak. I recently had lunch at a popular restaurant and found the background music so loud that it interfered with normal conversation and the enjoyment of my lunch. When I asked the waitress if she could turn the music off, or at least down, she said, ” I don’t think we can.” Surely we as a people are still in charge of volume controls.

When you add lawnmowers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, jack hammers, jet engines, transport trucks, and horns and buzzers of all types and descriptions you have a wall of constant noise and irritation. Even when watching a television program at a reasonable volume level you are blown out of your chair when a commercial comes on at the decibel level of a jet.

We seem to have created a cultural acceptance of our noisy world in spite of the fact that it is making us ill physically and psychologically. We can’t seem to live without background sound. We have friends who turn on the television the moment they awaken in the morning and leave it on all day. The house is just too quiet if it isn’t on. Former highschool students of mine used to tell me that the first thing they did on arriving home after school was turn on their CD player as loudly as would be tolerated by their parents.

Cornell University recently conducted a study to determine the impact of noise on employees in an open area office space where people are constantly exposed to fax machines, telephones, office chatter, shredding machines, etc. Test results revealed that workers in an open area had high levels of adrenalin in their urine. Adrenalin is released by the body when under stress. It prepares us for fight or flight. When these employees were compared to those in self contained office spaces the results were startling. People in a quiet, self contained work area did not have the same high levels of adrenalin in their urine. They were much more relaxed and less stressed.

A puzzle, demanding attention and concentration, was given to both groups of employees. The open area group was found to be less diligent in the solution of the puzzle becoming easily frustrated and giving up much earlier than the group from the quiet office. The study also found that workers from the quiet office slept better at night, had better digestion, were much less irritable at home and felt better at the end of their workday than employees from the open concept office. Noise does seem to effect focus, productivity and general physical and psychological well being. Noise tends to increase stress levels which in turn can result in increased frustration, anger and strained interpersonal relationships. We must begin to establish a friendship with silence.

How to Make a Friend of Silence

While we have very little control over noise in the environment at large, we do have control over our own private environment. This is where we begin to cultivate a friendship with silence.

* Make a conscious commitment to the experience and appreciation of silence.

* Go for a walk in nature. Let the silence soothe your spirit.

* When you are alone in your residence turn off all noise making appliances. Begin with fifteen minutes of silence and gradually increase the duration.

* Learn how to meditate and schedule a ten minute meditation period once or twice a day. Gradually extend your meditation time.

* When driving to work, turn off your car radio and drive in silence.

* Go camping for an night by yourself. Find a quiet campground where they don’t allow people to blast their music without consideration for others. I usually go solo camping for one week each year to be alone and silent in the outdoors. It has become something I eagerly look forward to.

* Drive to a lake at sunset and rent a canoe. Paddle slowly along the shoreline observing the silent sights and the gentle sounds of nature as the sun sets and darkness approaches.

* In silence listen to your breathing. Get a sense of the silent rhythm of life.

* Just before retiring go outside and look up at the night sky. You will soon sense another universal rhythm so unfamiliar to many. Let the night sky and the darkness embrace you and calm you as you prepare for a night’s rest.

* When you read a book, do so in silence. Many of us read to music or during television commercials. Try silence. You’ll grow to love it.

Soon you will begin to cherish the periods of silence you have built into your day and long for more. You will quickly discover that you are becoming more relaxed and less tense even in the midst of our noisy world. You will have made an invaluable new friend of silence, a friend which can comfort, heal and soothe your spirit. What a gift you will have given yourself.

Be still and know the restorative power of silence.

Use these simple steps to improve your concentration and keep your mind sharp.

Having trouble concentrating? You’re not alone! With today’s frenzied pace of life, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with demands on your time, and even easier to get distracted. Try using a few simple steps to recharge your mind and reclaim your focus.

Eliminate Distractions

Not to state the obvious, but to really concentrate, it’s important to eliminate or at least minimize distractions. But what is distracting to one person may not be for another. Me, I like to listen to music to concentrate, but for some people, it just makes them want to throw things across the room. Identify your distractions – anything from noise to phones to people – and do what you can to reduce their distraction potential.

Take a Break

This may seem counterproductive to concentrating, but letting your mind wander or indulging in a change of scenery for a few minutes can be very beneficial and allow you to more easily refocus when you return to the task at hand.

Exercise

Exercise helps ease tension and goes a long way toward improving your concentration. Whether you exercise in the morning or evening or take a quick 5 minute walk when you need a break, exercise helps melt away the stress of looming deadlines or problems and helps you think more clearly. Plus it makes you healthier and look good, too!

Build up Your Stamina

Even though this sounds like something athletes do, you can apply it to focusing on a task, as well. When you’re having a particularly tough time staying focused enough to finish a task, simply push yourself to go a little farther. For instance, set a small goal to work just 5 more minutes or read 5 more pages. Your mental stamina will improve, and chances are that when reach your goal, you’ll be in the mindset to go even farther.

Reward Yourself

Hey, we’re human, and as such, we like rewards. Indulge in a movie, new CD, massage, night out or even candy bar once you finish a project. If it works for kids and dogs, it can work for us adults, too!

Meditate

Regular meditation helps keep your mind sharp. It’s kind of like exercise for the brain. Plus it’s fun to seem all zen to your coworkers.

Music

As mentioned above, music is my key to concentration. If it works for you, great. Plug in your mp3 player or pop in a CD of the music that works for you and get to work. If music has the opposite effect on you and you find yourself dong improv karaoke instead of working, you should probably file this under ‘Distractions.’

Break Down

This doesn’t mean you should have a break down – it means you should break down a large project into smaller parts. It’s much easier to concentrate on a few smaller goals in succession than one large panic-inducing one.

Chew on This

Remember when your grade school teachers put a trash can in front of your face and made you spit out your gum? (Ok, maybe that was just me.) Well it turns out that maybe they were wrong. Studies have shown that chewing gum actually improves memory and concentration. Just be sure to opt for sugar-free gum if you’re fond of your teeth, and don’t chomp it loudly unless you want to be added to someone else’s ‘Distractions’ list.

Have a Drink

Save the adult beverages for after work, but while you’re working, you should make sure to drink plenty of water. Why? Even mild dehydration can make you tired and sluggish and less able to concentrate. So get yourself a reusable water bottle, drink up and let the concentration begin.

Reclaim your focus by using these simple tips. You’ll be more productive, spend less time procrastinating and have more time for yourself.

Not many people know of the mystical abilities of Cosmic Energy. Neither are they aware of the magical abilities that it possesses in doing some absolutely powerful things in their lives.

Very many people are filled with fear when broached by a new idea such as this. However as time passes many of these once mysterious concepts are being discovered by scientist as a natural part of our existence.

Cosmic energy is higher frequency of energy in our atmosphere. It flows as a beautiful stream of light. Like the energy emitted from the sun or the moon which affects our daily lives so to does cosmic energy affect us. We can use our intention to call on this energy to move through us or we can send it out into whatever we like with the intention of having a positive effect directed to that thing.

At first it is necessary to put aside all judgment and to be in a free state of mind. Preferably it is best to be in a playful state of mind, not expecting but more observing the flow of energy with our intention. This detached stat of being is the way to always work with energy. It is never wise to force it nor should we be in a needy state. Being in a needy or forceful state disrupts the free flow of energy. In time with practice you will clearly be able to tell if you are being needy or pushy because you will feel that the energy has stopped moving.

It is important to know that this energy has intelligence as you and I, perhaps it has an even more advanced awareness. We can literally call on that energy and it will arrive speedily.

The benefits are outstanding. It can heal our body and shift disease from our body. We can use to bring about many changes in our lives and relationship with others. You can use it to clear up a bad headache, you can run it though your food before eating, it will not only enhance the flavor but it will increase the quality of energy that you gain from eating that food which you have run energy through. You may also use it to shift the flow of energy in your hope. When the environment is negative and there is a lot of tension you may also use to bring a more light hearted and relaxed space. There is no end to the many things you can do.

One of the most powerful ways in which you can use cosmic energy is in your inner meditations for manifesting. When you sit in meditation with your focus on manifesting what you can you can increase the effectiveness of your meditation by adding light. When you use light you raise the energy frequency of your inner meditation adding more power to it.

Where there is more power of energy your manifestations will increase in their power. What is even more amazing is that adding cosmic energy to your manifesting mediations also insures that what you focus on will move into y our life in an even greater way than you could even have imagined. The energy intensives everything many times over. What you get in return will supersede all of your dreams

So are you ready to learn just how to use this energy? In a simple exercise you can begin by going into a quite space where you will not be bothered. Get some music, preferably inspirational music with our lyrics. You want to keep your free from distractions found in song as their meaning will always full your mind to think of the song. You want something that will keep your mind free but relaxed and open.

Bear in mind there is no absolutely right or wrong way, however there in one must and that one step cannot be changed as all the others. That step requires that you imagine a stream of light flowing through your body. Starting with the top of your head see and feel that light moving down through your body. Enjoy it as you can imagine that you are beneath a cascading flow of water except this is light. Be mindful of how your body feels and you bath in this light. Become mindful of how your body feels, Do you feel warm or are you feeling cold? Are there any particular sensations in your body?

When you have become filled and feel yourself alive you may then focus on a thing you want to manifest in your life. Decide clearly what it is you want and fix it clearly in your mind. As you allow yourself to experience that thing let the light within you flow out toward that thing. Become excited and hold the energy between you and your desire.

Remember never to force of be needy just hold a calm enjoyment of the energy and observe what it does. Different people have different responses to this energy. Some people are quite sensitive to it immediately while others are not able to feel anything, while those very people are later able to tell you all the effects that have occurred during their day as a result of using this energy.

Most people are able to handle higher amounts of stress on the days that this mediation is performed. Some have experiences the clearing away of cold symptoms rapidly. The list of positives are numerous. The ideal way would be use do this meditation every day. Even a few minutes first thing in the morning will enhance a person’s day greatly. It is so powerful that you life will have new meaning, it literally will.

If you want to become a good student, it’s important to have confidence in yourself as a learner. It’s important to believe that you actually like learning, and it’s important to believe that you really enjoy the topic you are studying.

Why? When you think that you’re not a good learner, you may let yourself get defeated before you start. When you tell yourself that you don’t understand a subject, that it’s too hard, and it’s not very interesting, you won’t let your brain get excited about learning the material.

You can actually reprogram your mind to improve your learning success by changing your attitude and beliefs.

By pretending to yourself that you do understand the subject matter, and that you find it incredibly interesting, you set up the conditions within your mind to make this a reality.

Successful visualization essentially means that you are able to pretend to yourself that you are already performing successfully the skill you want to learn.

You can use the technique of visualization to change your messages to yourself about what kind of student you are. You can create new messages for yourself saying that learning is easy and fun for you.

Practice your new, imagined state of learning confidence frequently, until it becomes a part of you.

To make the messages sink in even more deeply, put yourself into a very relaxed state of body and mind. To achieve this state, sit or lie comfortably in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Notice your breathing.

Relax your body and focus your attention on your breath. Start to breathe freely and deeply, in a relaxed manner. You can also use different meditation techniques to get your mind into a more relaxed state where it will be easier to accept a new, positive message.

Take a few messages to picture yourself as a learner. Take note of what you see in your mind.

When visualizing, some people see still images, as in a photograph, while others see live action all around them. For some people, the images are two-dimensional and faint, while for others, the images are three dimensional and solid. For different people the images may appear as black and white, transparent, or colored.

Your visualization may seem to unfold on a screen like a movie, or you may see yourself acting in a play on stage with seemingly real people. You may be watching an image of yourself in action, or you may feel as if you are actually inside your own body, looking out through your eyes, watching the action around you and participating in it.

If you are visualizing either past or future scenarios in a way that drains away your self- confidence, you can use special techniques derived from Neuro-Linguistic Programming that will lessen their hold on you.

Are your visualizations of yourself positive or negative?

When a negative scenario plays itself out in your mind, notice how it appears. Does the scene appear in black and white, or is it in color? Is it near or far? Does it seem to be on a screen, or is it three dimensional? Are there voices? Are they threatening? Humiliating? How do you appear in the scene–are you large, or small? Do you seem powerful? Or weak?

Once you are familiar with the details of your negative imaginings, become the director of your own inner movie. If you are seeing a negative experience in color, change it to black and white, or make it transparent. If the negative image is close, make it go far away.

If the negative image is three-dimensional, make it two-dimensional. If there are voices you don’t want to hear, make them quiet, or turn them into funny cartoon voices that sound silly.

Play circus music in the background to drown out the words of people you don’t want to hear. If other people in your scenes seem very threatening to you, shrink them in size or make them into cartoon characters. Imagine yourself growing very, very large and solid, much bigger than the people who have been putting you down.

If you have been reliving an unpleasant scene as if you are actually participating in it with the action all around you, change it so it takes place on a screen that you are viewing from a distance. That way it will have less emotional impact on you. Bleach out the colors, or turn them to black and white. Turn down the sound. Then make the screen smaller and mentally whoosh it away.

Now, replace the visualizations that you don’t want with visualizations that you do want. Imagine scenes of yourself being happy, relaxed and confident. See yourself learning easily, understanding deeply, getting excellent marks on your tests.

Strongly feel within yourself the satisfaction, confidence, and pride you would have. See it, feel it, right now, in the present, as a part of you.

Feel that you really understand the subject matter and that you absolutely love learning more about it. Pretend to yourself that it is one of your favorite subjects to learn about.

When you have imagined yourself in a scene that fills you with positive confidence, you can view it on a screen, or imagine yourself right in the middle of the scene, taking place all around you. Intensify the colors, and your positive feelings.

Or just close your eyes and feel within yourself how much you enjoy this subject, and how much you enjoy how smart you are.

Anytime you have a few minutes, recreate these positive imagined scenes. Do this as many times a day as you can, until you always think of yourself as a smart, capable learner.

Stress is probably one of the biggest problems working individuals face today. Most people are always on the go and always under a lot of pressure. While technology has made most jobs easier, it has allowed employers to expect more and more productivity from their employees. And with these, people have less and less time to unwind and relax.

While a lot of us can get away with unwinding and going on vacation every few months, a lot of people need to relax a little bit almost everyday to be able to properly function the next day. And people have searched for alternate ways to unwind on a daily basis. A lot of people can settle for a couple of drinks at the bar down the block. Some can relax by spending an hour to a couple of hours at the gym working out. While a lot of people need to settle with prime time TV while eating dinner.

Stress has become such an issue that there are even treatments for it. Even multivitamins have been labeled as anti stress tablets and capsules. But any effective stress relief options will usually require time and energy. And sometimes, you start asking if you really get relaxed with what you do or do you spend time stressing yourself out more.

Now one sure way of getting relaxed is by meditation. Meditation is the process of training one’s mind to self induce a mode of consciousness that can be beneficial to the person involved. This usually means finding a quiet place where the person can relax and focus his or her mind into one thing. You can also totally empty your mind and allow it to wander and totally relax the rest of your body.

While most spas will provide you relaxing options like Jacuzzis and body massages and saunas, it is also one of the best places to learn meditation. Most spas will have meditation classes that you can enroll in and learn meditation from an expert. Spa massage rooms are also great places to practice meditation because of its ambience, ambient lighting and relaxing piped in music.

Meditation may not be for everyone but it can be very beneficial for people who really like to either get their minds off things or get their minds to focus on one thing. This can help you come up with solutions for problems or be the first step in finding a suitable solution to any problematic situation.

Brainwave Entrainment Mind Over Menopause Is New Mantra for Women in Mid-Life

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.
betabrand | mind calming music
Move over, “mind over matter.” We have a new mantra for women in mid-life. It’s not just a catch-phrase, though. It’s a state of being created by creative visualization and relaxation (CVR) sessions designed for women who are enduring menopause.

For many women, mid-life can be a time of uncertainty and loss. At the same time, the body’s response to the decrease in hormones can create any number of physical symptoms. Loved ones start to ask, “What happened to the caring, loving woman we once knew?” Now you can reclaim that woman, along with all the strength, confidence, and wisdom you gained in the first half of your life.

The physical symptoms of menopause can include hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, itchy skin, mood swings, lost libido, headaches and irregular cycles, to name just of few. Bad as those symptoms are, though, they can pale next to the depression and anxiety caused by loss of fertility and the perceived loss of youth.

While CVR certainly doesn’t stop menopause, it can help women better cope with both the mental and physical symptoms of the change. Women can use creative visualization and relaxation to help balance their mood, harness positive mental energy and use their innate creative power to produce much-needed balance in their lives during this time of change and uncertainty. They can stop focusing on what they’ve lost and discover all they’ve gained.

The effectiveness of creative visualization is strengthened when combined with another highly-effective mind technology known as brain entrainment. Brain entrainment devices feature glasses and earphones that deliver finely-tuned light and sound frequencies to synchronize the left and right sides of the brain and produce full-spectrum brainwave activity for a deeply relaxing experience.

CVR sessions and light and sound machines are the total package, helping women in their mid-life make peace with their bodies. They transport women’s minds into the deepest meditative states, magnifying the effect of the binaural beats and allowing users to achieve better results in far less time.

That may sound too good to be true, but the truth is that women experience quick relief from the emotional and physical rigors of menopause. A 20-mintue session of brain entrainment is also equal to four hours of sleep…a blessing for women who have been kept awake by hot flashes and headaches. They are also simple to use, since leading brain entrainment machines plug into any MP3 player. Most importantly, when used in combination with CVR audio sessions, light and sound machines get women’s lives back in balance and eliminate the symptoms of menopause.

With sessions that focus on topics like mastering the physical changes of menopause, creating harmony with the cycles of life and tips for quick menopausal relief, CVR sessions designed for a woman’s change of life really do place “mind over menopause.”

Whether women feel overwhelmed by the physical or the emotional aspects of menopause-or both-CVR can help them regain balance in their lives and thrive in this new life season. Women will learn to view menopause as a rite of passage, one that gives them confidence and inner worth. They’ll discover that mid-life can bring forth a whole new them that’s been there all along just waiting to blossom.
